Anna Moffo - The Complete RCA Recital Albums [12CD Box Set, 2015] MP3

2015 | Classical
MP3 320 Kbps | 1.2 Gb

THE FIRST OF THE TWELVE discs in this collection of Anna Moffo’s RCA recital recordings begins with a 1960 performance of the jewel song from Gounod’s Faust, and that selection, along with the others on this disc, sets out the singer’s basic assets and liabilities. It’s a fresh lyric sound—Moffo was twenty-eight that year—even throughout the range, accurate in pitch and coloratura, with a good try at a trill. She phrases with musicality but not much nuance or variety of color. These qualities serve her and the music well in the coloratura fireworks of the shadow song from Meyerbeer’s Dinorah; “Bel raggio,” from Rossini’s Semiramide; and the bell song from Delibes’s Lakmé, all of which she tosses off with ease. Micaela’s aria from Carmen, however, demands more emotional thrust, while her Mimì and Liù are bland and anonymous.
Moffo’s career, as she admitted in later years, was damaged by too much, too soon. The essay in the printed booklet is aptly titled “The Curse of Beauty.” It didn’t help that Moffo was compared to Maria Callas, and was rashly encouraged to emulate the older diva. By 1962, Moffo recorded a disc of Verdi arias—not just lighter pieces such as the bolero from I Vespri Siciliani, but also the big stuff from Un Ballo in Maschera, Aida and Otello, in which she is plainly beyond her depth, vocally and interpretively. A year later, she was pushed in the opposite direction, recording The Dream Duet, operetta excerpts with tenor Sergio Franchi performed in a stylistic no-man’s land somewhere between bad Broadway, bad Vienna and bad Hollywood. Skip this nightmare entirely.

Martha Argerich - Complete Recordings on DG [48CD Box Set] (2015) FLAC

FLAC, Lossless | Classical | 11,2 Gb

Here, for the first time in a limited edition single box set, are the 48 CDs that make up Martha Argerich's recording legacy from 1960 to 2014 with Deutsche Grammophon and Philips. The set traces Argerich's recording career from early Chopin, the famous Ravel and Prokofiev Concertos with Abbado, to the more recent live outings with Nelson Friere (a long-time partner) and Daniel Barenboim. On the way there is overwhelming Rachmaninov, a scintillating Carnival of the Animals, and many more.

Review
Her playing has unmatched authority, boldness and brilliance --The Observer

I think interpretation tries to liberate what one understands unconsciously. When one can let loose some things in performance that one doesn t know are there unexpected things and surprises that s when it s really worthwhile --Martha Argerich

Jeroen van Veen - Erik Satie: Complete Piano Music [9CD Box Set] (2016) FLAC

2016 | Classical
FLAC, Lossless | 2.22 Gb

Following his compendious sets of music by the outstanding figures of Minimalism such as Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman, Jeroen van Veen returns to Brilliant Classics with new recordings of the grandfather, inspiring figure of the genre, Erik Satie. Not that Satie himself would have recognised the term, coined by Nyman in the early 70s, but in saying new things in a quiet voice, swimming against the tide of Romanticism, he influenced not only Debussy, Ravel, Les Six and countless artists of any medium - working in Paris during the early decades of the last century, but came to represent a totemic figure for artists in 1960s New York and London again, painters and sculptors no less than composers who went their own ways down diverse paths, from Cage and Cardew to Glass. Now a century and a half after his birth comes the most complete set yet of Saties piano music, though Saties attitude to his works and the attitude of his age towards him was sufficiently eccentric and partial that much remains unpublished, even unheard. However, Jeroen van Veens set is distinguished by the first complete performance on record (or at least, on the sets digital version) of Vexations. This unpublished four-bar bass-line, extended to 16 bars by harmonisation, came to the notice of John Cage, who organised the first performance in which Saties suggestion of 840 repetitions was taken literally. Honouring Saties tempo marking of Très Lent, Vexations thus occupies a duration of around 24 hours. The CD set contains the first 47 repetitions. Satie is everywhere not only in the Gymnopédies heard so frequently on film and TV but the gentle calm of the other, early sets of piano music; then also in the Muzak which he pioneered, part in jest, part social commentary, part useful service; in the zany cabaret music which made his name, and a little money during his lifetime, thanks to successful collaborations with Cocteau, Picasso and others who instantly recognised a true original. Here is a unique and bargain-priced opportunity to discover the full range of his artistic achievement. This set contains the complete music for piano by Erik Satie, including the works for 4 hands. Saties piano music became immensely popular in the 70-ties of the last century, when pianists like Reinbert de Leeuw and Aldo Ciccolini took it out of the realm of serious classical music. Especially the Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes became Music for the Millons and adorned many amateurs piano stand. This set proves however that there is much more than the Gymnopédies. Satie created a whole world of revolutionary aesthetics, mixing the serious with the absurd, the sense and the nonsense, the surreal and the banal. He had immense influence on composers after him, including Cage, Stravinsky and the Minimalists like Glass, Nyman and others. Pianist Jeroen van Veen, the Champion of Minimalism, is the ideal interpreter of Satie, his playing, quasi-naïve, is hypnotic, entering another sound and time dimension.

Hanns Eisler Edition [10CD Box Set] (2014) FLAC

2014 | Miscellaneous Works
FLAC, Lossless | 2.94 Gb

A private pupil of Schoenberg, who described him as one of his most gifted students, Hanns Eisler stands as one of the most fascinating composers of the 20th century – a composer whose left-wing political affiliations saw him forced into exile with the rise of the Nazis, who subsequently settled in the USA and was denounced first by his sister to the FBI and then by Nixon himself as ‘the Karl Marx of communism in the musical field’ (to which Eisler retorted that he was ‘very flattered’ by the comparison), leading to deportation back to Europe in 1948. He was one of Bertolt Brecht’s chief collaborators in political songs, films and stage works (the two resumed contact in Hollywood after Eisler’s move to the US), also working with other notable types such as the singer Ernst Busch and writing politico-intellectual subject matter. After his return to Germany, where he settled in Stalinist East Berlin, he became enormously influential in re-stimulating musical life, teaching at the Berlin College of Music that now bears his name and taking the composition masterclass at the Academy of Arts.

This 10CD box is a tribute to the composer, revealing the enormous amount of music he wrote in a vast variety of styles, from tuneful mass songs to Schoenberg’s 12-note method. Believing as he did in the functionality of music, Eisler employed whatever idiom was appropriate to the task in hand, including drawing inspiration from jazz and popular songs and distortions of military music. Though he wrote some very large works (such as the Deutsche Sinfonie – part symphony, part cantata, part ‘German Requiem’), he was especially a master of small forms, as we see for instance in his Kleine Sinfonie, largely derived from his film music of 1930–2 (and which adheres to his credo that music can offer a new utilisation when it forges links with other artistic forms of expression). Many of his works are of course political-based, but what becomes apparent throughout listening to his oeuvre is that, while rejecting all the rhetoric of Romanticism, Eisler never lost faith in firm technique and the value of solid contrapuntal work. A wealth of talent is assembled for this album, from the first-rate German ensembles Staatskapelle Dresden and Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester to lauded artists such as the character actress Gisela May and the soprano Irmgard Arnold, who can be heard in rehearsal with the composer himself.

Other information:
- Hanns Eisler was without doubt one of the most fascinating composers of 20th century Germany. His left wing political views forced him to flee Nazi Germany, settling in the USA, from where he was exiled in 1948 by Nixon as a “musical Karl Marx” (which he considered a compliment..). In East Berlin he became a strong musical influence, collaborating with Berthold Brecht and others.
- Eisler’s composition style changed considerably over the years: starting out as a 12-tone disciple (he was a private student of Schoenberg in his youth) he ended up writing “functional” music, for people’s understanding, education and enjoyment, always in line with his left wing views on the “elevation of the people”.
- This 10 CD set offers an extensive (though by far not complete, he wrote an enormous amount of music) survey of Eisler’s works: symphonic, operatic, chamber music, vocal works, performed by the best East German forces, like Staatskapelle Berlin, RSO Berlin, RSO Leipzig, Berliner Singakademie and singers like Gisela May and Irmgard Arnold.
- The extensive and excellent liner notes (more like an essay) are available on the Brilliant Classics website. Additional sung texts will follow soon.
- Booklet contains an overview of the composer and his music as well as full tracklists for CDs 4, 5, 6, 7 & 10.
