TTC - Norse Mythology

TTC - Norse Mythology
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 24 Lessons (11h 21m) | Size: 9.6 GB

The figures of Norse mythology are everywhere. They swing hammers in multi-million-dollar film franchises. They ride to blaring trumpets at opera houses around the world. But, as you will discover, the stories and characters made so popular today don't hold a candle to the source material. Get to know the real histories of the comic book, cartoon, and film stories you think you know.

Thor, Odin, Loki, Freyja, the Valkyries, Valhalla, Ragnarok. These names are familiar to us, yet much of what we encounter about Norse mythology in daily life and pop culture are connected to their medieval sources in name only. And while the reinterpretation and reimagination of old stories is a legitimate narrative tradition, we do both the past and the present a disservice when we allow these reinterpretations to displace the true Viking-age myths. These stories-preserved through orally transmitted poems from more than 1,000 years ago in pre-Christian Scandinavia-were not written down and collected until much later, in the 13th century in Iceland. Since then, they have transformed again and again as each new generation has encountered them.

These original tales, which included stories of the first humans made from pieces of driftwood, of a world-encircling serpent, of gods who are both incredibly powerful and incredibly fallible, of magic runes and weaponry, of battle-hardened warriors and shape-shifting tricksters, are more eye-opening than anything portrayed in pop culture. And they reveal a fascinating window into a time and civilization that is both starkly different from our own, and in some ways, surprisingly similar.

Join Jackson Crawford-long-time university instructor, public educator, Old Norse scholar, and popular YouTube host-for a rousing introduction to the original stories, characters, and themes of Norse mythology. Packed with gods, anti-gods, magical figures, human heroes, religious practices, and thrilling adventures, the 24 lectures of Norse Mythology lay bare the reasons for our enduring fascination with these undeniably dramatic tales. They also connect the dots to Icelandic sagas of human heroes and to the culture and worldview of the Scandinavian peoples. With his expertise, Dr. Crawford will help you engage more deeply with these sources and leave you with plenty to remember in the eerie tales and timeless wisdom of the Norse gods and heroes.

One Epic Family Squabble

So, where do these myths come from?

In AD 1000, Iceland was converted to Christianity-a conversion that, unlike in Norway, happened peacefully. Such a peaceful transition to a new religion in a place far from the rest of Europe allowed medieval Icelanders to continue passing on the oral poetry of their pagan forebears without the anxiety and suspicion pagan traditions encountered elsewhere. Yet the religion they now practiced was Christianity, so no instructions for the worship of the old gods were passed down. Only the stories.

Dr. Crawford roots Norse Mythology in two main sources:

Prose Edda: Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson's work remains the most approachable written source for Norse myth, from the world's beginning to its destruction at Ragnarok.
Poetic Edda: This anonymous work compiles some 30 poetic tales that once circulated in oral transmission, many of which Snorri quotes and explains in his Prose Edda.
A Pantheon Like No Other

The Norse myths are largely the account of the fierce (and sometimes comedic) rivalry between two great sides of a family of powerful supernatural beings, fighting from the beginning of time to its end. On one side: the gods, who, being more favorable in their conduct toward human beings, were the only side of the family the Norse worshipped. On the other side: the "anti-gods," who had a similar power and close relationship, but an incredibly hostile disposition.

Norse Mythology is your chance to spend time in the company of an incredible pantheon of characters, many of whom differ in remarkable ways from their pop-culture counterparts.

Thor: The iconic god of thunder? Not necessarily. In our written sources in Old Norse, Thor is associated with thunder only once-during his duel against his stone-headed enemy, Hrungnir. Otherwise, Thor is never actually associated with thunder.
Loki: A trickster god whose Old Norse stories vary in tone. In one story, for example, you'll hear how he fathers fearsome children who will murder the gods. In another, you'll see him as the punchline in a story where one of his children (a horse) ends up being useful to the gods.
Balder: Odin's son, whose name relates to the ancient word for brightness, was so beloved that Snorri tells us a bright flower is known as "Balder's eyelash." You'll see his shocking death, a principal story from the Eddas, as an omen of darker things to come.
Freyja: It appears likely the goddess Freyja was the commander of the Valkyries, who had the ability to travel between the realm of the living on Midgard and that of dead warriors in Valhalla. (And Dr. Crawford notes that, unlike in common pop-culture portrayals, "Valkyrie" was a job and not a supernatural being-albeit one with special perks.)
And that's just the beginning of the supernatural beings you'll encounter in these lectures. They also include:

Shieldmaidens: Unconventional women who led the life of a warrior or raider;
Berserkers: Men blessed by Odin with a violent, wild trance that enables them to outfight their enemies while making them social pariahs; and
The Norns: Three shadowy female beings who determine, at the birth of every sentient being, what day that person will die.
Incredible Stories, Incredibly Told

Dr. Crawford teaches you how to approach Norse mythology on its own terms, not as you would a novel or movie from our own day. Like dreams, the actions taken by the gods, heroes, and villains in these stories often feel constrained by limits we can't see, understand, or even reason. While there may be consistent characters in many individual myths, there can be minor differences in plot or story details.

So, trust in the fluidity of the myths, and enjoy spirited retellings of stories in which:

Thor loses his great hammer (sometimes through trickery, other times by having it taken from right under his nose);
The first members of humankind are molded by the gods from two pieces of driftwood found by the shore of the ocean;
Odin travels to Hel to dig up a dead witch and interrogate her about what his son's premonitions of his own death mean;
Multiple generations of a marshy district in Iceland must deal with the ravages of an "again-walker" (akin to a zombie); and
The dwarven smith Regin teaches the great Volsung hero Sigurth skills in sword-fighting, archery, languages, and even board games.
But these stories are more than just entertainment. They offer perspectives into beliefs, customs, and practices that defined the people that told them, including a code of reckless courage and an emphasis on honoring oaths in the most literal fashion possible.

An expert in Old Norse language and literature, Dr. Crawford has written his own translations of the primary sources of Norse mythology. And as a long-time university educator and full-time public educator on these incredible stories, he makes every lecture of Norse Mythology feel like a thrilling ride into the past, and into all the various realms these characters inhabited.

Master English Phrasal Verbs

Master English Phrasal Verbs
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 82 lectures (16h 29m) | Size: 21.4 GB

Sound like a native by using the everyday phrasal verbs that we all use

What you'll learn:
How to employ the most common phrasal verbs fluently
How to differentiate between phrasal verbs that have similar meanings
How to memorize phrasal verbs in context
How to use the lesser-known phrasal verbs

Requirements
The desire to speak English confidently, clearly and correctly
The determination to master challenging new vocabulary
The motivation to become fluent in English

Description
English can be a frustrating language to learn, and the phrasal verb is perhaps the most challenging area of English vocabulary. As a teacher of English, I see that the difference between intermediate and advanced learners lies in a working knowledge of how, when, and where, phrasal verbs are used. My course develops this knowledge of phrasal verbs, pushing intermediate learners of English into the 'advanced' category. If you want to pass yourself off as an English native, this course is an essential stepping stone.

The course begins with lectures (ALL available for download) on the most common phrasal verbs; these are verbs that natives use in their everyday speech, so it is essential that anyone hoping to master English learn these words by heart. Having dealt with the easier vocabulary, we then look at phrasal verbs that are composed of the following 'root' verbs:

DO, MAKE, GET, TAKE, GIVE, COME, PUT, RUN, SET, KEEP, GO, TURN, BRING, SEE, PLAY, DRAW, CALL, HOLD, LAY, BEAR, LET, WORK, BE

Each of the above-mentioned sections contains at least one ten-minute lecture and one quiz. Once you have completed all of these lectures, we move onto the most common prepositions found in phrasal verbs:

UP, DOWN, IN, OUT, ON, OFF, OVER, AROUND, ABOUT, THROUGH, WITH, FOR, BACK, TO, OF, AWAY, AT, BY, INTO, AFTER, AGAINST, TOGETHER, AS

The course also includes my ebook, Visual Phrasal Verbs (329 pages), and I expect to add some additional lectures in the future; I appreciate that learning is a never-ending experience, and I enjoy making classes on phrasal verbs.

By the end of the course, you will find yourself using these phrasal verbs in conversation, and you will even start noticing the more difficult ones in the books that you read, or in the TV shows that you watch. Having memorized the new vocabulary, you will speak with more confidence, elegance, and eloquence.

Who this course is for
Intermediate students of English
Vocabulary addicts

Since 1972, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated locations of cultural and natural significance that are of outstanding value to humanity as World Heritage Sites.

Sites designated by UNESCO highlight masterpieces of human creative genius, such as great archaeological sites, sublime works of religious architecture, monumental sculpture and painting, classic urban landscapes, and masterworks of architecture and engineering. UNESCO World Heritage Sites comprise a breathtaking panorama of our world's greatest treasures, both natural and man-made, now encompassing sites in 167 countries. To be familiar with even a sampling of these sites is to appreciate and understand the masterworks of human endeavor down through history, as well as our world's most extraordinary natural wonders.

In World Heritage Sites: Exploring the World's Greatest Places, celebrated historian Justin M. Jacobs of American University takes you on a sumptuous tour of 24 of the most outstanding UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In a fascinating cross-section of both cultural and natural heritage, you'll visit sites such as:

The Great Barrier Reef-Australia's massive ecosystem of iridescent coral reefs and incredible marine life, the largest structure ever created by living organisms;
The Taj Mahal-Considered by many to be the world's most beautiful building; a phenomenal monument to love and to the culture of India's Mughal empire;
Samarkand-Legendary jewel of the Silk Road, and repository of stunning medieval Islamic architecture;
Canada's Rocky Mountains-A natural marvel of astounding proportions, containing glaciers, ice fields, mountain ranges, archaeological sites, and a huge range of fauna and flora; and
Egyptian Thebes-Arguably the greatest religious complex ever built, where five centuries of pharaohs left their mark on resplendent temples and the most spectacular necropolis in the world.
Greatest Treasures of World Culture

The value and pleasure of this unique tour rests on Justin's brilliant presentation. Far from simply surveying the features of the sites at hand, he situates each site in its precise cultural context and history, and, in the case of the natural heritage sites, their geological and topographical history, biodiversity, and history of contact with humanity.

As a case in point, The Forbidden City, Beijing's majestic palace complex of the Chinese emperors, represents not just imposing imperial architecture, but a multilayered cultural story that made the site what it is. In presenting the spectrum of the site's treasures, Justin evokes the backdrop of two great dynasties, the Ming and Qing, as they combined to produce the singular structures of The Forbidden City. He shows how the individual palaces, temples, and gardens were used by the emperors, empress dowagers and consorts, eunuchs, and retainers.

Lavishly illustrated with vivid color photos, artworks, film footage, diagrams, and maps, the course takes you on a splendorous journey covering six continents. The result is a richly enjoyable dive into our planet's most extraordinary and memorable destinations for travel, study, and appreciation.

Dazzling Spectrum of Sites

In addition to seeing in-depth segments on famous sites such as the Acropolis of Athens, the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Peru's Machu Picchu, and Japan's Mount Fuji (both a natural and cultural treasure), you'll also uncover other sites that may be somewhat less familiar, yet are equally extraordinary in their features and significance, such as:

Angkor Wat-One of the world's most superlative archaeological sites, nestled deep in the jungles of Cambodia. Take the measure of this vast temple which shows the influence of Hindu culture in the mighty Khmer Empire; a symbol of the political power of the Khmer, stunningly decorated with epic friezes of Hindu gods, legends, and apsaras (heavenly dancers).
Teotihuacán-The grandest city of ancient Mesoamerica, whose monuments rivalled those of both Egypt and Rome, and whose mysterious inhabitants left no written records. Survey the great expanse of the site and experience its culture and cosmology through the enigmatic Temple of the Feathered Serpent, the massive Sun and Moon Pyramids, and evidence of the city's customs and sacred rituals.
Virunga National Park-Located within the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and one of Africa's and the world's premier national parks. Take in its fabulous landscapes, dormant volcanos, range of large mammals, birds, and other wildlife. Learn about its most famous resident: the critically endangered mountain gorilla.
Sacred Sites of Tibet-On "the roof of the world," these monuments to Tibetan Buddhism are deeply revered by the Tibetan people. Contemplate the iconic Potala Palace, traditional seat of the Dalai Lamas; the Jokhang Temple, the most sacred temple in the Tibetan world; and the Norbulingka, the Dalai Lamas' summer residence. Think of them in perspective against the background of Tibet's turbulent modern history.
China's Mogao Grottoes-Found along a transport route of the ancient Silk Road, 500 man-made caves hold an awe-inspiring array of Buddhist art, showing an amazing synthesis of artistic styles and cultural traditions. View the multitude of wondrous paintings and sculptures, as well as the grottoes' vast trove of Buddhist literature and texts, untouched for nearly a thousand years.
Persepolis-Testament to the glory of ancient Persia's Achaemenid Empire, the magnificent citadel of Persepolis embodies the ideology of an empire of vast size and unprecedented cultural diversity. Visit its monumental gateways, palaces, stairways, and audience halls. See how its glorious art pays homage to the diversity of an ancient civilization.
Breadth and Richness of UNESCO

In addition to physical locations, the UNESCO program also is involved in protecting humanity's common cultural heritage, which is less tangible but of considerable historical importance. In this category, you'll discover Thingvellir, the site of Iceland's Althing, an open-air parliament that convened for over 300 years, which comprised a singular and visionary form of self-government, and remains one of Iceland's great cultural and historical treasures.

You'll also visit the fabled Malian city of Timbuktu, with its extraordinary adobe mosques, but whose fame rests most significantly on its astonishing preserved trove of hundreds of thousands of ancient Arabic manuscripts that bear witness to the great medieval tradition of Islamic scholarship and learning.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites also include cultural masterpieces that no longer exist, yet more than deserve our knowledge and understanding. Using photos, illustrations, video footage and more, you'll explore the phenomenon of the Bamiyan Buddhas of Afghanistan, colossal and richly adorned statues, comparable in size to the Statue of Liberty, that were destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban. You'll also explore Palmyra, an ancient caravan city in Syria containing rich treasures of architecture, mostly destroyed in 2015 by ISIS.

Throughout the lectures, Justin's depth of historical knowledge, insight into these sites, and perspectives on the questions surrounding their preservation make this course a thoroughly compelling experience. In World Heritage Sites: Exploring the World's Greatest Places, you'll discover and enjoy 24 of the greatest wonders of our planet and its many cultures.

TTC - The Complete Guide to Smartphone Photography
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 20 Lessons (7h 25m) | Size: 5.77 GB

Until recently, producing, editing, and sharing photos could be a complicated undertaking. The process would require state-of-the-art cameras, pricy lighting equipment, and elaborate backdrops. It would warrant access to editing software that was often expensive and unintuitive. And finding the perfect level of exposure, shopping for the right light sources, and putting together the proper composition-artistic considerations necessary to produce a good photograph-took lots of time and practice. However, the advent of the smartphone has now changed photography dramatically, putting a host of new tools at your fingertips. You just need to know how to use them.

Smartphones are often equipped with robust cameras with multiple lenses and extensive editing features available. The only equipment you need for taking and editing quality photos now fits inside your back pocket-a remarkable technological and artistic achievement that has fundamentally changed the way human beings capture and view the world around them. In just over a decade, smartphones have eliminated many of the steepest barriers to effective photo-taking, editing, and distribution. With the right know-how, anyone with a smartphone can take a quality photo.

But what kinds of features do smartphones offer? In what ways are Androids and iPhones different when it comes to their cameras, lenses, editing options, and photo sharing capabilities? Which downloadable editing applications and affordable photography accessories can you get to build on your smartphone's existing features if they are not enough for your photo-taking or editing needs? And how can you most effectively combine basic photography skills with cutting-edge technology to produce beautiful pictures?

Look no further than The Complete Guide to Smartphone Photography, a comprehensive course focused on exploring the ins and outs of taking, tweaking, organizing, storing, and sharing photos exclusively on your smartphone. These 20 lessons are designed for photographers of all levels who want to produce slicker, more technically proficient photographs. All you need is some motivation and a smartphone.

Join Jared Platt, a working professional photographer, as he walks you through the photo-taking and editing functionality of both the iPhone and the Android phone, giving you detailed tutorials of each camera type, native galleries, and editing applications. Learn about the fundamentals of photography, from how to effectively manipulate the lighting of a photo to how to compose a picture using the rule of thirds. Jared will explore the benefits of downloadable applications like Snapseed and Lightroom, which are not built into your smartphone, to expand the scope of your phone's photo editing abilities. And tag along to watch him take photos of his son, the Seattle Discovery Park landscape, precious family heirlooms, and more. He will show you how to apply everything you have learned about your smartphone and photography and how to use that knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Getting to Know Your Smartphone

Whether you own an iPhone or Android, the key to taking good photos on any smartphone is a clear understanding of what the phone itself has to offer. In The Complete Guide to Smartphone Photography, get to know your smartphone's photo-taking capabilities through a series of demonstrations. With Jared as your guide, you will explore:

The most important feature on your smartphone when it comes to taking photos is the camera, or more specifically, the front and back lenses. Learn how your phone's camera differs from other cameras on the market, in terms of function and lens quality.
Native Camera Applications. On any smartphone, you control your camera through what is known as a native camera application. Perhaps you are aware of some of the basic functions your camera application has to offer, but more complex features are available if you know where to look. Luckily for you, this course will explore the full breadth of your phone's camera application.
Native Editing Applications. Editing capabilities are also built into your smartphone. On the iPhone, they live in the Photo app whereas Android phones typically offer two options for editing photos. Become familiar with all three applications and learn how to use them to edit your photos intelligently and effectively.
Photo Organization, Storage, and Distribution Abilities. Now that you have taken and edited polished photos on your phone, how can you best organize them? What is "the Cloud" for photo storage and how, precisely, does it work? And what applications can you use to share your new photos with family and friends?
Add-ons. Beyond the existing features and software built into your smartphone, you can enhance the photo-taking and editing functions with additional accessories and downloadable applications. Jared will walk you through the options available to you, per what suits you best, whether it's a detachable lens or a more robust editing application.
This course will provide you with a solid and clear understanding of how to use your smartphone device for taking high-quality photos, as well as how to use available applications to edit, organize, store, and share photos.

The Art of Photography: Getting Down to Basics

Your smartphone, however, is just one of many tools that you can use to photograph the world around you. Ultimately, you cannot take or edit a good photo-with a phone or any other camera device, for that matter-if you do not know what to look for. Luckily, The Complete Guide to Smartphone Photography dedicates many of its lessons to the basic elements that are foundational for the field of photography more broadly. In this course, you will define key vocabulary terms like frame rates, JPEG, and megapixels and you'll spend whole lessons exploring exposure, composition, and lighting. Plus, you will learn how to tell a story, evoke a feeling, or accurately capture an activity through your images.

Perhaps most important, you will be asked to combine what you've learned about your smartphone, and its applications, with these fundamental photography skills in two complementary ways. First, join your expert guide Jared on a series of live photo-taking and photo-editing sessions. See how a firm grasp on exposure and lighting come into play when taking photos with your phone outside. Discover the role composition plays when you snap tabletop photos of food or other objects. And explore how a keen eye for artistry and detail helps when you step into the virtual editing booth. Second, you will be asked to apply what you have learned while watching what you saw Jared do. It's now your turn to go out into the world and take photographs yourself. Work on taking photos intelligently, using only what you've got in your back pocket, and become truly comfortable photographing people, places, and things with your smartphone's camera.

Lastly, this course will not only deepen your technological knowledge of how to operate the iPhone or Android to suit your photography needs, but it will also show you how photography works fundamentally. You'll be taught all about the artistry and creativity that are involved at the root of the photo-taking process.

Learn to Program & Model Procedural Cities in Unity/Blender

Learn to Program & Model Procedural Cities in Unity/Blender
MP4 | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Genre: eLearning | Language: English + srt | Duration: 92 lectures (13h 12m) | Size: 10.8 GB

Your guide to understanding procedural construction of buildings and city maps for games and virtual environments

What you'll learn:
Explain the nature of 3D space and producing a grid for displaying and snapping 3D models together.
Identity several procedural algorithms that can be applied to generate virtual city maps.
Apply fractal and dynamic methods to algorithmically generate buildings and cities.
Create a bespoke procedurally generated city map complete with districts, population densities and vegetation.

Requirements
Knowledge of Blender and/or Unity required.
A Working Knowledge of C# in Unity (For Part B)

Description
Procedural generation in games and virtual environments lends itself to the algorithmic generation of infinitely unique computer-created experiences. Its potential lies in its ability to automatically develop digital content on demand, reducing the amount of work required by programmers and modellers. However, a lot of preparation is necessary for such a strategy to be implemented. A thorough understanding of the role that both sides of the game development coin (technical/logic and art/design) plays in procedural generation is key for a successful implementation. In this course, Penny and Mike bring a unique experience to both programmers and artists alike and combine their skills and many years of industry and academic knowledge to bring you a holistic learning experience, in which you will find content and invaluable mastery.

This course uses Unity 2020.3 and Blender 3.0 and is Windows and Mac compatible.

The content is presented in two parts which can be studied in any order, independently or together.

In Part A, Mike will be taking you through a series of stages, starting with blocking out your city with simple placeholders, a critical design step often overlooked. Taking those placeholders we add a little extra detail to start bringing the city to life and map out the road system properly. Once that warm-up is out of the way, Mike will start focusing on thinking in a more modular manner by looking at the fundamental building blocks required to make our assets. Then finally, we will move from placing the pieces manually to placing them automatically, first with Blender's Modifier Stack and finally completely procedurally using Blender 3.0's new Geometry Node system.

In Part B, Penny will begin by taking you through a variety of workshops using the Unity game development engine, to teaching you how to manipulate and position road models on a plane to create a city street map. Following this, algorithms will be worked through to create data structures to store city information and populate the city with residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. The commonly used algorithms for Voronoi Diagrams and Perlin Noise will be employed to calculate city zones and city population densities.

By the end of this course, you will have a professional toolkit of programming and modelling skills that will give you the advantage over others who are "just programmers" or "just modellers", including knowledge of multiple procedural techniques that can be employed in both Unity and Blender. Understanding game development that tightly integrates both design and logic from this standpoint is critical to making you a valuable commodity in the job market or preparing you for running an indie operation.

What others are saying about Penny's courses:

I do like Penny de Byl's courses and way of teaching, they are much more specific than your average "master Unity" kind of courses and usually, you don't learn just the engine but also how things work behind the scenes. She's really amazing!

I've been coding for about 3 years and since purchasing Penny's "Animation", and "Procedural Terrain" courses, the excitement and fun have returned once again to my programming.

Penny and her team know their stuff and are just amazing in explaining everything, breaking it down. Most importantly she challenges you to do stuff on your own rather than just "spoon-feeding" you everything. Then she comes back and shows you one way of doing it. Just an amazing course!!!

What others are saying about Mike's courses:

I've used Blender for a number of years, but I'm a total novice next to Mikey and I've learned so very much from him here!

Mikey is an amazing teacher, I can't praise this course highly enough. Worth every penny.

Mikey is a talented, thorough, and clear instructor, and he knows how to make the student think 'for themselves', which is such a great experience.

Who this course is for
Intermediate programmers and 3d artists interested in exploring procedural generation.
