Collectivism after Modernism: The Art of Social Imagination after 1945 edited by Blake Stimson, Gregory Sholette
English | February 20, 2007 | ISBN: 0816644616, 0816644624 | True PDF | 331 pages | 28.9 MB
"Don't start an art collective until you read this book." -Guerrilla Girls

"Ever since Web 2.0 with its wikis, blogs and social networks the art of collaboration is back on the agenda. Collectivism after Modernism convincingly proves that art collectives did not stop after the proclaimed death of the historical avant-gardes. Like never before technology reinvents the social and artists claim the steering wheel!" -Geert Lovink, Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam
"This examination of the succession of post-war avant-gardes and collectives is new, important, and engaged." - Stephen F. Eisenman, author of The Abu Ghraib Effect
"Collectivism after Modernism crucially helps us understand what artists and others can do in mushy, stinky times like ours. What can the seemingly powerless do in the face of mighty forces that seem to have their act really together? Here, Stimson and Sholette put forth many good answers." -Yes Men
Spanning the globe from Europe, Japan, and the United States to Africa, Cuba, and Mexico, Collectivism after Modernism explores the ways in which collectives function within cultural norms, social conventions, and corporate or state-sanctioned art. Together, these essays demonstrate that collectivism survives as an influential artistic practice despite the art world's star system of individuality. Collectivism after Modernism provides the historical understanding necessary for thinking through postmodern collective practice, now and into the future.

Benoît Henriet, "Colonial Impotence: Virtue and Violence in a Congolese Concession (1911-1940) "
English | ISBN: 3110648784 | 2021 | 202 pages | PDF | 18 MB
In Colonial Impotence, Benoît Henriet studies the violent contradictions of colonial rule from the standpoint of the Leverville concession, Belgian Congo's largest palm oil exploitation. Leverville was imagined as a benevolent tropical utopia, whose Congolese workers would be "civilized" through a paternalist machinery. However, the concession was marred by inefficiency, endemic corruption and intrinsic brutality. Colonial agents in the field could be seen as impotent, for they were both unable and unwilling to perform as expected. This book offers a new take on the joint experience of colonialism and capitalism in Southwest Congo, and sheds light on their impact on local environments, bodies, societies and cosmogonies.

Combinations of Complex Dynamical Systems by Kevin M. Pilgrim
English | PDF (True) | 121 Pages | ISBN : 3540201734 | 2.1 MB
This work is a research-level monograph whose goal is to develop a general combination, decomposition, and structure theory for branched coverings of the two-sphere to itself, regarded as the combinatorial and topological objects which arise in the classification of certain holomorphic dynamical systems on the Riemann sphere. It is intended for researchers interested in the classification of those complex one-dimensional dynamical systems which are in some loose sense tame. The program is motivated by the dictionary between the theories of iterated rational maps and Kleinian groups.

Comedy Archaeology: Unearthing The Unproduced Episodes of Iconic Sitcoms as Well as Unmade Comedy Pilots, Specials, and Movies by Richard Irvin
English | September 4, 2024 | ISBN: 9798887715513, 9798887715506 | True EPUB | pages | 1 MB
Do you remember seeing an episode of Bewitched that guest starred comedian Red Skelton, or The Honeymooner's story where Ralph and Alice adopt a puppy, or the Life with Lucy Christmas episode? If you answered "no" to these questions, you are correct. Despite scripts or treatments being written for these shows, none of the episodes were ever produced.

Comedy Archeology not only includes descriptions of unproduced episodes of several classic situation comedies but also summarizes never-made comedy pilots and specials like 1975's Jack Benny's Special Special, a proposed animated pilot called Manor House featuring characters made famous by Jackie Gleason on his variety series, and television host, Steve Allen's proposed science fiction comedy, The Little Woman. The book also details many unmade comedy movies that would have starred the likes of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in the Road to India and the Road to the Fountain of Youth, John Belushi in Noble Rot, the four Marx Brothers in Up Spoke the Captain, and others.

Christine Mabon, "Comfort Food: Amazing Friends and the Everyday Stories That Happen Around Food"
English | ISBN: 1733830804 | 2020 | 296 pages | EPUB | 795 KB
Comfort Food: Amazing Friends and the Everyday Stories That Happen Around Friendship is a collection of personal essays about friendship and the foods that brought us together. The book identifies five kinds of friends and is separated into five sections, each one corresponding to one of the five friends and the course of a five-course meal that corresponds to that friend. The friend whom we turn to for encouragement is the appetizer course; the younger and knowledgeable friend who brings vitality and fresh perspectives into our lives is the salad course; the friend who is there to anchor us in times of uncertainty is the entree course; our older, wiser source of wisdom flowing into our lives is the beverage course and the friend whom we turn to when we want to kick back and have sweet fun times finishes our meal as our dessert course. When these friends bring it all together, we enjoy the banquet of life.

Coming of Age : How Adolescence Shapes Us
by Lucy Foulkes
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1847927297 | 227 Pages | True ePUB | 0.59 MB

Drawing on a decade of psychological research, Coming of Age gets beneath the recent myths and age-old stereotypes of adolescence to reveal the real reasons why teens behave as they do.
'Fascinating, moving . . . clear-eyed, unerringly sensible . . . there is insight and kindness throughout this book' Daily Mail
Why do teens take risks? What is it that makes them anxious? How do they think about sex, love, bullying and friendship? Adolescence is often difficult and it shapes us for life, but psychologist Lucy Foulkes shows that too often we fear, dismiss or even try to prevent aspect of it that are crucial to our development. Overturning many mistaken assumptions, she shows that apparent recklessness is usually calculated; that teenagers are socially conservative as much as rebellious; that being popular can be just as hard as being lonely; and that self-consciousness and sensation-seeking are not just normal but useful. Above all, she shows that adolescents have an extraordinary capacity for resilience, empathy and mutual support, and that even the most challenging experiences are part of an essential process of self-discovery.
'Excellent and insightful . . . expertly presented . . . Foulkes is steeped in knowledge about, as well as respect for, teenage life' Observer
'Wonderful and deeply moving . . . shows us the potentially positive aspects of adolescent experiences so often seen as negative' MARK HADDON

COMING TO NOTHING AND FINDING EVERYTHING: Prison, Headlessness, and The Man in the Other Bathroom By J.C. Amberchele
2019 | 179 Pages | ISBN: 1792662467 | EPUB | 1 MB
All of J.C. Amberchele's books have been rated five stars. Writing of Cracked Open, Amberchele's last book, a reviewer states, "I have read what seems like a billion books about spirituality in the last 50 years. This one is my favorite." Another reviewer reports, "One of the all time best books ever. Period." This new book by J.C. Amberchele continues in the same vein, relating his personal experiences, both in prison and after release, to the timeless Now of awakening and the reoccurring transformation that follows. As Richard Lang, author of "Celebrating Who We Are" writes in the Foreword, "Amberchele writes with honesty, humility and humour, painting with vivid word-pictures his adventures. But what also enables me to enter deeply into his mind and heart is his direct seeing and valuing of the Self at the core of himself, the one who is 'the soul of my soul.'" In the wisdom tradition of the philosopher Douglas Harding, J.C. Amberchele invites us to "come to our senses" and actually See for ourselves Who we really are, rather than blindly accept what someone else has told us. In this book, he encourages us to "look at what we are looking out of" and actually experience our true nature, that which is always available to each of us right now.

Commentaries on Aristotle's "On Sense and What Is Sensed" and "On Memory and Recollection" By St. Thomas Aquinas, Kevin White, Edward M. Macierowski
2005 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0813213797 | PDF | 1 MB
In traditional catalogues of Aristotle's works, "On Sense and What Is Sensed" and "On Memory and Recollection" are the immediate sequels to his "On the Soul," and the first two books of his so-called parva naturalia, or "little works in natural philosophy." In keeping with this order, Thomas Aquinas began his series of Aristotelian commentaries with a commentary on "On the Soul," which he followed with commentaries on "On Sense and What Is Sensed" and "On Memory and Recollection," written in 1268-70. Until now, these latter two commentaries have never been published in English translation. The translations presented in this volume are based on the critical Leonine edition of the commentaries, which includes the Latin translations of the Aristotelian texts on which Aquinas commented. The volume includes English translations of these Latin translations, allowing the reader to compare Aristotelian text and Thomistic commentary in detail. The translations of both commentaries are furnished with introductions and notes by the translators. The commentary on "On Sense and What Is Sensed" is divided into a prologue and eighteen chapters. In the prologue Aquinas makes an important statement concerning the division and order of the theoretical sciences. In the commentary he clarifies and develops the text's discussion of sense-powers, its "application" of sense-powers to organs and objects, and its concluding questions concerning the object and medium of sensation, and the role of the "common sense." In "digressions" from his literal exposition, Aquinas presents discussions bearing on psychology, epistemology, natural philosophy, and metaphysics. The commentary on "On Memory and Recollection" is divided into eight chapters, the first three of which deal with memory, and the last five with recollection. The former part addresses three questions: "What is memory?" "To what part of the soul does memory belong?" and "What is the cause of remembering?" The part on recollection also addresses three questions: "What is recollection?" "How does recollecting take place?" and "What is the difference between memory and recollection?" In "digressions," Aquinas explores more fully the issues arising from the exposition of the text.ABOUT THE TRANSLATORS:Kevin White is associate professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of America. Edward M. Macierowski is associate professor of philosophy and classical languages at Benedictine College.PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:"This volume...does the great service of making Aquinas' commentaries on these two short works available in English for the first time..."This volume makes a serious and worthwhile contribution to the study of Aquinas, Aristotle, and the tradition to which they both belong." -- Arthur Madigan, S.J., Review of Metaphysics"The translations are clear and literate... [of] immediate interest to specialists in medieval philosophy and Thomists, especially in so far as it helps to clarify questions of psychology and epistemology in Aquinas' thinking about the soul (anima). -- Thomas Cooksey, The Classical Outlook

Andrea Staiti, "Commentary on Husserl's "Ideas I""
English | ISBN: 3110426285 | 2015 | 352 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Husserl's Ideas for a Pure Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy (1913) is one of the key texts of twentieth century philosophy. It is the first of Husserl's published works to present his distinctive version of transcendental philosophy and to put forward the ambitious claim that phenomenology is the fundamental science of philosophy. In Ideas, Husserl introduces for the first time the conceptual arsenal of his mature phenomenology: the principle of all principles, the phenomenological epoché and reduction, pure consciousness, and the noema. All these difficult notions have been influential and controversial in subsequent philosophy, both analytic and Continental. In this commentary, thirteen leading scholars of Husserlian phenomenology set out to clarify and defend Husserl's views, connecting them to the vast corpus of his published and unpublished writings, and discussing the main available interpretations in the existing scholarship. The result is a detailed and comprehensive account of the most original form of transcendental philosophy since Kant's
