Close to the Wind: An Extraordinary Story of Triumph Over Adversity By Pete Goss
1998 | 358 Pages | ISBN: 0783887523 | EPUB | 1 MB
On 25 December, 1996, Pete Goss turned his 50-foot yacht Aqua Quorum back into a hurricane-force headwind to rescue French sailor Raphael Dinelli. He risked his life and any chance of winning one of the world's great yachting challenges--the Vendee Globe nonstop, single-handed, round-the-world race. Instead, he was awarded France's highest honor, the Legion d'Honneur.Close to the Wind is Goss's story. He starts the book with his years of preparation as a merchant seaman and skipper on one of the 10 yachts in Chay Blyth's British Steel Challenge. He describes how he attempted to get sponsorship but was constantly rebuffed, and he discusses the hardships he faced--nights before business meetings spent sleeping on platforms because there was no money to spare for a room, for instance. The drama of the Vendee is recounted in detail, down to Goss's having to operate on his elbow without anesthetic and with only the assistance of faxed instructions.Pete Goss became a national and international hero when he rescued French yachtsman Raphael Dinelli as his boat sank beneath him in the round-the-world single-handed sailing race, the Vendee Globe, on Christmas Day 1996. In doing so Pete scuppered his own chances in the race but was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by France's president and made a friend for life in Dinelli. Close to the Wind is his own story of the race and its dramas, his revolutionary boat, Aqua Quorum, his thoughts and emotions during four months of solitude at sea, the extraordinary surgery that he had to perform on his own elbow and the aftermath of the rescue in the Southern Ocean.

CMOS Cantilever Sensor Systems: Atomic Force Microscopy and Gas Sensing Applications by D. Lange , O. Brand , H. Baltes
English | PDF | 2002 | 148 Pages | ISBN : 3540431438 | 13.6 MB
This book is intended for scientists and engineers in the field of micro- and nano electro-mechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS) and introduces the development of cantilever-based sensor systems using CMOS-compatible micromachining from the design concepts and simulations to the prototype. It is also a useful resource for researchers on cantilever sensors and resonant sensors in general The reader will become familiar with the potential of the combination of two technological approaches: IC fabrication technology, notably CMOS technology, and silicon micromachining and the resulting microstructures such as cantilever beams. It was recognized early that these two technologies should be merged in order to make the microstructures smart and devise integrated microsystems with on-chip driving and signal conditioning circuitry - now known as CMOS MEMS or, with the arrival of nanostructures, CMOS NEMS. One way to achieve the merger is the post-processing micro- or nano- machining of finished CMOS wafers, some of which is described in this book. The book introduces this approach based on work carried out at the Physical Electronics Laboratory of ETH Zurich on arrays of cantilever transducers with on-chip driving and signal conditioning circuitry. These cantilevers are familiar from Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) and allow the sensitive detection of phys ical quantities such as forces and mass changes. The book is divided into three parts. First, general aspects of cantilever resona tors are introduced, e. g. their resonant behavior and possible driving and sensing mechanisms.

CMOS Capacitive Sensors for Lab-on-Chip Applications: A Multidisciplinary Approach by Ebrahim Ghafar-Zadeh , Mohamad Sawan
English | PDF (True) | 2010 | 154 Pages | ISBN : 9048137268 | 14.6 MB
1.1 Overview of Lab-on-Chip Laboratory-on-Chip (LoC) is a multidisciplinary approach used for the miniaturization, integration and automation of biological assays or procedures in analytical chemistry [1-3]. Biology and chemistry are experimental sciences that are continuing to evolve and develop new protocols. Each protocol offers step-by-step laboratory instructions, lists of the necessary equipments and required biological and/or chemical substances [4-7]. A biological or chemical laboratory contains various pieces of equipment used for performing such protocols and, as shown in Fig. 1.1, the engineering aspect of LoC design is aiming to embed all these components in a single chip for single-purpose applications. 1.1.1 Main Objectives of LoC Systems Several clear advantages of this technology over conventional approaches, including portability, full automation, ease of operation, low sample consumption and fast assays time, make LoC suitable for many applications including. 1.1.1.1 Highly Throughput Screening To conduct an experiment, a researcher fills a well with the required biological or chemical analytes and keeps the sample in an incubator for some time to allowing the sample to react properly. Afterwards, any changes can be observed using a microscope. In order to quickly conduct millions of biochemical or pharmacolo- cal tests, the researchers will require an automated highly throughput screening (HTS) [8], comprised of a large array of wells, liquid handling devices (e.g., mic- channel, micropump and microvalves [9-11]), a fully controllable incubator and an integrated sensor array, along with the appropriate readout system.

CMOS Logic Circuit Design is an up-to-date treatment of the analysis and design of CMOS integrated digital logic circuits. It is a self- contained treatment that covers all of the important digital circuit design styles found in modern CMOS chips.

Introductory chapters on MOSFET physics and CMOS fabrication provide the background needed for a solid understanding of the circuit design techniques in the remainder of the book. Static CMOS logic design is given an in-depth treatment which covers both the analysis and design of these types of circuits. Emphasis is on analyzing circuits to understand the relationship between the design and performance in an integrated environment. Analytic models and their application are presented to provide a uniform base for the design philosophy developed in the study.
Dynamic circuit concepts such as charge sharing and charge leakage are presented in detail and then applied to dynamic logic families such as domino cascades, self-resetting logic, and dynamic single-phase designs. Differential logic families are given an entire chapter that discusses CVSL, CPL, and related design styles. Chip issues such as interconnect modeling, crosstalk, and input/output circuits round out the coverage.
CMOS Logic Circuit Design provides the reader with an opportunity to see the field in a unified manner that emphasizes solving design problems using the various logic styles available in CMOS.
CMOS Logic Circuit Design is designed to be used as both a textbook (either in the classroom or for self-study) and as a reference for the VLSI chip designer.

CMOS Multichannel Single-Chip Receivers for Multi-Gigabit Optical Data Communications by Paul Muller , Yusuf Leblebici
English | PDF(True) | 207 Pages | ISBN : 1402059116 | 3.9 MB
The intention of this book is to address a number of timely, performance-critical issues within the field of short-distance optical communications, from a circuit designer's perspective. It discusses the major trade-offs the designer has to deal with in the development of monolithically integrated receivers in CMOS technologies. As such, it is based on Dr. Muller's doctoral dissertation entitled "A Standard CMOS Multi-Channel Single-Chip Receiver for Multi-Gigabit Optical Data Communications", subm- ted to the School of Engineering of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in May 2006. The dissertation material has been enhanced by the presentation of a number of alternative design approaches and circuit topologies, providing exhaustive coverage of the state of the art in optical sho- distance receiver circuit design. The need for a new processor input/output (I/O) interface paradigm is dictated by ongoing te- nology scaling and the advent of multi-core systems. Indeed, each new generation of microprocessors and digital signal processors provides higher computing power and data throughput, whereas the available bandwidth of the I/O interfaces is subject to much slower growth. Moving beyond - coming serial links to an optical data link paradigm for very short-distance (board-to-board and chip- chip communications allows for considerable I/O interface bandwidth enhancement. Fully integrated silicon CMOS receivers are considered to be the technology of choice to lead this solution to economic success, because monolithic integration results in lower volume-manufacturing cost, improved yield and reduced assembly and test expenses.
