Anthony Collins - Complete Decca Recordings [14CDs Box Set] (2021) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 2.03 Gb

Limited Edition 14CD box set including several recordings new to CD, the complete published Decca legacy of noted Sibelius conductor Anthony Collins is collected for the first time on disc. Highlights include the Sibelius symphonies and selected orchestral works with the London Symphony Orchestra, British music from Elgar, Walton, Vaughan Williams, the two Delius LPs and music by Anthony Collins himself, concertos with Moura Lympany, Ruggiero Ricci, Friedrich Gulda, Gervase de Peyer and others, and orchestral showpieces by Tchaikovsky, Falla, Humperdinck and Bizet. From the earliest days of his career, Anthony Collins (1893-1963) earned a reputation as a musician of parts: violist, conductor, arranger and composer. He had led the viola section of the London Symphony Orchestra under Beecham and Mengelberg before swapping bow for baton in the 1930s, and by then had already begun to promote the music of Sibelius. Then Hollywood came calling, and he spent the War in the US as an Oscar-nominated film composer writing for RKO Studios. He began to record for Decca directly after the War, first of all with the London Mozart Orchestra which he had founded shortly before leaving for the US. Renowned by then as a Mozartian of natural gifts, securing shapely and stylish performances independently of either the grand Viennese tradition or the period-instrument movement in it's infancy, he accompanied the pianist Friedrich Gulda - a kindred spirit of similarly mercurial imagination - in concertos and concertante works by Mozart and Strauss, and then Peter Katin in Mendelssohn, and Moura Lympany in Rachmaninov. He re-established a close rapport with the LSO, conducting them in several albums of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Delius that have rarely been equalled for their directness of expression and intensity. These virtues still distinguish the cycle of Sibelius symphonies and tone-poems, made in the mid-50s with the LSO, from later interpretations. A generation of English and American listeners learnt their Sibelius from these recordings, and Collins's deep fellow-feeling for his music stands the test of time. The Decca recordings included a Tchaikovsky album of Capriccio Italien and Francesca da Rimini as well as a pair of his own compositions, and other masterpieces of English light music by Walton - a complete Façade - Sullivan and Grainger. Items never previously issued on CD include dance suites from Hänsel und Gretel and Der Rosenkavalier, as well as the Mozart Symphony No.33 which began his relationship with the label. The booklet offers full discographical details as well as an essay on Collins's life and career by Peter Quantrill.

Baroque: Albinoni, Bach, Corelli, Locatelli, Marcello, Vivaldi etc [25CD Box Set] (2020) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 3,3 Gb

The 17th and 18th centuries marked the era of Enlightenment, overseas exploration, unprecedented European economic expansion and a flourishing of art and culture, not to mention the birth of the greatest composers in history. From concertos to fantasias, suites to sonatas, Brilliant Classics presents a comprehensive and concise overview of this innovative and groundbreaking period in musical history, the Baroque era. The set opens with Venetian composer Tomaso Albinoni and his famous Concerti a5, in which he was the first Italian composer to use the oboe as the solo instrument in a concerto. He influenced J.S. Bach, who is fittingly the next composer to feature. Bach pioneered the Concerto Grosso form, with several soloists plus accompaniment, as opposed to just one. There is no better example of this than the famous Brandenburg Concertos, where solos are shared between a group of instruments and the various timbres of the different instruments make for varied and interesting pieces. In the first concerto, Bach employs horns, then mainly used as open-air hunting instruments, a twist on the refined concert piece performed in an elegant chamber setting. Bach also admired the work of Alessandro Marcello. Although Marcello's work is lesser known, his music is notable for it's forward-looking nature. Far from copying the styles and structures of his contemporaries, Marcello's music is unique in it's emotional impact; it's dark and tempestuous, inflicted with a romantic streak. Passing via selected works by Purcell, Corelli and Telemann, Alessandro Stradella's string sinfonias are found towards the end of the set. Stradella lived only to the age of 38 and yet he wrote over 300 works. He also found time to conduct a string of love affairs leading to his untimely demise at the hands of an assassin hired by a rival.

RCO 125 The Radio Legacy: Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra [Vol.01-Vol.12, 152CDs Box Sets] (2013) MP3

2013 | Classical
MP3 320 Kbps | 25 Gb

No collection of recordings from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's rich history can offer the listener a truly complete overview. But the present CD box set certainly comes closer than any before it. The Radio Legacy is a compilation of the seven part Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the four box sets devoted to the orchestra's chief conductors Willem Mengelberg, Eduard van Beinum, Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Chailly, and also featuring more recent recordings with Mariss Jansons. Drawing on the wealth of recordings in the Dutch public broadcasting network archives, the selection does justice to the unique history of the orchestra. Repertoire, performance, conductors, soloists, and recording quality were the criteria which, proved to be decisive. Indeed, the compilers have worked 'with the awareness that the making of choices brings with it the duty to showcase as many aspects of this history as possible'. This CD set can thus be seen as an important supplement to the orchestra's musical legacy as reflected by the many releases on record labels over the years. Included in the luxurious box set is '125 Years in Silent Pictures', a photo book featuring archival and specially made new photos capturing the orchestra's history from the very first beginning through 2013. An index book focusing on composers, conductors and soloists will guide the listener through this vast collection of recordings.
