125 years Munchner Philharmoniker [17CD Box Set] (2018) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 2.41 Gb

Juilliard String Quartet - The Early Columbia Recordings 1949-1956 [16CD Box Set] (2021)

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 1.64 Gb

Elly Ameling - The Philips Recitals [29CD Box Set] (2023) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 3.51 Gb

Limited Edition 29CD Box Set. A glorious celebration of 'the Dutch nightingale': all of Elly Ameling's song-recital albums for Philips in one original-covers box, including a premiere CD release for her first-ever recording. In a career that spanned 43 years, Elly Ameling recorded over 150 LPs and CDs, many of them recognized with an Edison Award, the Grand Prix du Disque and the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis. She chose, from early on, to place art song at the heart of her repertoire. It is the full range of her mastery in this repertoire, from Monteverdi to Mahler, from Schubert to Cole Porter, which is celebrated in the present collection of her Philips and Decca recordings, issued to mark her 90th birthday. Purity and beauty of voice, lively characterization and the art that conceals art were the hallmarks of Ameling as a singer. She loved singing as a child, and studying languages as a teenager, and her singing radiated an inner warmth and intelligence throughout her career. That career began in earnest soon after she won a Dutch singing competition in 1956, when a recording was made of the 'Laudate Dominum' from Mozart's Dominican Vespers, K. 321, issued by Philips on a 45rpm record and quickly forgotten. Only now has it been transferred to CD, from a rare copy of the disc in the collection of the Dutch writer René Seghers. In his new booklet essay for this box, Seghers explains the story behind the recording, and analyses the elusive art of Ameling, informed by his own interviews with her. She recorded with pleasure and brought an imagined audience into the studio with her, and her communicative gifts transferred readily to the microphone. Philips captured her in Baroque cantatas by Vivaldi and Handel, and in the central German Lied repertoire from Haydn, Mozart and Schubert (eight glorious albums, including his little-known theatre music) to Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch and Mörike-Lieder. Her perfect French is on display in mélodies by Debussy, Poulenc and Satie, and her linguistic virtuosity comes to the fore in several immaculately curated albums of mixed repertoire from Dowland to Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Digitally recorded in 1982, Ameling's 'An die Musik' Schubert album had the distinction of being the first Lieder recital to appear on CD, and still deserves the accolades heaped upon it then. Though they were made in the CD era and received with just as much lavish praise as their predecessors, Ameling's later Philips albums have become collectors' items, and several of them receive their first reissue in this box. There are even two albums of jazz standards, which Ameling sings in inimitable style.

Piotr Tchaikovsky - Tchaikovsky Edition [60CD Box Set] (2011) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 9.15 Gb

This, I must admit, is more of an overview than a review. There's more detail in my survey of Brilliant's 60-CD set issued in 2011; even that was in the nature of a skim and I am recycling and summarising some of the overlapping material. The 60-CD set and the present one range over many of the same recordings but there are differences. For a start this one does not have a CD-ROM of notes and librettos. The present box has a 14-page essay by David Nice: well done Brilliant for not making false economies there. The 'missing' CDs are the five comprising historical recordings.

The symphonies - seven of them - are the same as in the 2011 set. For the most popular core symphonies (4-6) we are in the hands of Rozhdestvensky in 1987 with the LSO. They are in glorious form apart from the Andante of No. 4 which is unfeelingly quick. Tangy fillers come in the shape of Marche Slave, Capriccio Italien and The Storm. There's no sign of Tempest.

The Symphonies 1 and 3 are from a Vladimir Fedoseyev cycle. His fine Third is in harness with a tragically cloud-hung and angry Hamlet in thunderously affirmative sound. Yuri Simonov is in charge for Symphony No 2, Francesca (CD3) and Manfred. These are very good though not quite in the exultant Bernstein (CBS-Sony) vein. Technically, however, these recordings are exemplary - far superior to Bernstein’s CBS analogue.

Simonov favours a broad and steady stride in Francesca. He is gloriously well recorded and handles the central love-song with moody tenderness. Simonov’s Manfred (CD7) has its moments – again in the poetic Andante and kindred episodes in the finale (tr. 4 11:30) – but in overview tends towards the diffuse. It’s not a patch on Svetlanov (BMG/Scribendum/Melodiya) or Symeonov (Vista Vera).

The Orchestral Suites are from Marriner and the Stuttgart Radio orchestra. These are 1980s recordings originating from Capriccio. They are in clean and atmospheric sound with a delightfully spread stereo image – a great way to discover some little known Tchaikovsky though not up there with Dorati on Philips.
CDs 8 and 9 include incidental music for the theatre: 20 scenes from Hamlet as well as a Festival Overture on the Danish National Hymn. This is excellent and has been harvested in from Chandos. Geoffrey Simon is in charge. It is a pity that all three Tchaikovsky-Simon-Chandos CDs were not included. The Snow Maiden from Chistiakov combines charm and exuberance (review).

Pietro Antonio Locatelli - Complete Edition [21CD Box Set] (2015) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 3 Gb

This release is the first and only Complete Locatelli Edition ever! Locatelli composed in the tradition of the Italian Baroque, in the well-known forms of the concerto grosso, solo concerto, and trio sonata. Locatelli's style is inventive, flamboyant, and extremely virtuosic. His violin sonatas and concertos still present a daunting challenge to today's violinists. Russian violinist Igor Ruhadze was trained in his native Moscow as a virtuoso on the modern violin. However, Ruhadze's interest in early music took him into playing with such ensembles as Musica ad Rhenum, Jed Wentz, and others. Ruhadze's solid technique enables him to tackle the difficulties of Locatelli's music with ease, charm, and brilliance on this recording. The featured ensemble, Violini Capricciosi play on original instruments and follow historically informed performance practice.

Shostakovich Edition [49CD Box Set] (2012) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 7.03 Gb

Johann Ladislaus Dussek - Complete Piano Sonatas & Sonatinas [10CD BoxSet] (2024) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical, Fortepiano | 1,5 Gb

Johann Ladislaus Dussek (1760-1812) was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the foremost keyboard performers and composers of his age. Over a span of three decades, Dussek completed nearly 300 compositions, most of which involve a keyboard instrument. The sonata as a genre holds a special position in his overall oeuvre: keyboard sonatas were among his first published pieces in the early 1780s, and the sonata Op. 77 in F minor was to be his last work before his death in 1812.This set is the result of an extensive recording project using the combined resources of eight excellent fortepianists to produce the first comprehensive recording of Dussek's keyboard sonatas on period instruments. Listeners are invited to take a journey through the brilliant, harmonically beautiful and expressive music of one of the most fascinating composers at the threshold of early Romanticism. While in modern times piano building has been largely standardised, 18th-century instruments were very personal works of art, and their construction differed from town to town and from builder to builder, and even within one builder's output. The distance between cities as far apart as London and Vienna resulted in two distinct schools of piano building: the "English" and the "Viennese."The formidable array of both English and Viennese fortepianos played on this recording (see info below) provides listeners with a parallel journey, alongside through Dussek's music, exploring the great tonal variety that existed amongst fortepianos in the composer's day, with each instrument's unique qualities matched to the differing characters of Dussek's works.

Simon Rattle: The Berlin Years [45CD Box Set] (2024) MP3

MP3 320 Kbps | Classical | 6.28 Gb

The chemistry between tradition and innovation powered Sir Simon Rattle’s relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker, above all during his time as the orchestra’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director (2002-2018). As the successor to Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, his mission was to take this pre-eminent musical institution into the 21st century. “What Rattle has brought … is a new spirit of adventure,” declared The Times in 2006, and later looked back on the “exhilarating, epoch-hopping eclecticism of Simon Rattle’s era in Berlin”. Through all this Rattle preserved the orchestra’s distinctive sonority, notable, in the words of the New York Times, for its “sheer grandeur … and rich, red-blooded warmth”. He first conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1987, and the recordings in this 45CD box span the years from 1994 to 2012. Very much reflecting Rattle’s vision for the orchestra, the symphonic, choral and operatic works range from pillars of Austro-German Classicism, Romanticism and Modernism through French, Russian and Czech repertoire to showcases for contemporary contemporary composers from around the world – and even a film soundtrack. As Rattle said at the end of his tenure in Berlin: “Music is for everybody, and we’ve all believed this.”
