Wilhelm Furtwangler - The Radio Recordings 1939-1945 (22CDs Box Set) (2019) MP3

MP3 CBR 320 kbps | Run Time: 21:44:46 | 3,09 Gb
Genre: Classical | Label: Berliner Philharmoniker

The radio recordings between 1939 and 1945 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wilhelm Furtwangler are among classical music's most compelling sound documents. Created at the peak of the collaboration between orchestra and conductor, Furtwangler's artist personality is conveyed more vividly than anywhere else. What can be heard is music in which inspiration and the expressive will know no bounds and in which, not least, the existential experience of the Second World War reverberates. For the first time, the Berliner Philharmoniker are releasing a complete edition of these recordings. Wilhelm Furtwangler is accorded almost mythical status to this day. Biographically and artistically rooted in the 19th century, he embodies a bridge to the late Romantic period and the founding years of the Berliner Philharmoniker, whose chief conductor he was from 1922. Furtwangler's auratic charisma stems from an intriguing basic interpretive concept which avoided authoritarian gestures and deliberately aimed at the blurring of tonal contours. The result was a warm, mixed sound, in which developments and intensifications never appear calculated, but seem to grow organically. This edition not only brings together all surviving radio recordings of the period, but also draws on the best available material in particular, original tapes, which were taken to the Soviet Union after the war and only returned to Germany from the early 1990s onwards. Especially for this edition, the recordings have been carefully restored, digitally sampled using state-of-the-art technology and remastered in 24-bit resolution. A total of 21 concerts are presented here, in whole or in part. The edition's features include numerous historical photos, articles on the history behind the recordings, plus an extensive essay by the American musicologist Richard Taruskin on Furtwangler's art - all of which results in a release which provides an opportunity to discover and relive this great chapter in the history of the Berliner Philharmoniker in all its facets as never before.

Rudolf Serkin Plays Beethoven Concertos, Sonatas & Variations (11CD Box Set, 2012) APE

APE , Lossless | Classical, Romantic | 2.80 Gb

Notes and Editorial Reviews
Here we have all of the solo and concerted stereo Beethoven repertoire featuring Rudolf Serkin released by Sony Classical, gathered together in an 11-disc budget boxed set. It does not include mono Beethoven items that Serkin remade in stereo. However, Serkin's great mono-only Diabelli Variations is present, along with alternative live Marlboro Festival recordings of the Fourth concerto and the Choral Fantasy, plus two stereo versions of the Op. 110 sonata (one from 1971, the other a posthumously released 1960 recording).

The gaunt intensity, nervous energy, tensile strength, and textual rectitude that Serkin brought to Beethoven influenced several generations of pianists, particularly in America. You especially perceive these qualities throughout the aforementioned Diabellis, the Third and Fifth concertos' outer movements, the early sonatas' finales, the “Pathétique” first movement (Serkin was the first major pianist on disc to extend the exposition repeat back to the start of the long introduction), Op. 111's combative Allegro, and the “Hammerklavier” outer movements. Serkin's “Moonlight” and “Appassionata” have not lost their staying power as reference recordings, yet the pianist proves even more persuasive in the Op. 119 Bagatelles and in a lean, lofty, and elegant reading of the B-flat Op. 22 sonata. To be sure, some of Serkin's later performances prove sterner and less supple when heard alongside their earlier counterparts.

The sound samples below enable you to compare his handling of the counterpoint in Op. 110's Scherzo in 1960 and 1971, and to measure his fiery 1962 opening Choral Fantasy cadenza alongside the still powerful yet relatively labored live 1981 traversal. Then again, the older Serkin still could rise to the occasion, as borne out in the surprisingly impetuous Op. 77 Fantasia, and the 1975 “Waldstein” sonata's blazing coda. Similarly, the 1974 Fourth concerto's live ambience offers a more realistic replication of Serkin's nuanced trills and double notes than the stereo studio version's harsher, less sustained tonal characteristics. In sum, collectors with a broad interest in Serkin's Beethoven will find this modestly priced release attractive. Full discographical information is provided on the individual disc sleeves in lieu of booklet notes.

The admired Swiss soprano, Edith Mathis, received her musical training at the Lucerne Conservatory, and completed her studies in Zurich. Following successful debuts in Zurich, Bayreuth, Cologne, and Hamburg she was cast by Karl B?hm as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, and Cherubino proved to be the central role in Edith Mathis’s repertory during her early career. B?hm was also undoubtedly the conductor who left a decisive mark on Edith Mathis’ aesthetic parameters and it was he who introduced her to Deutsche Grammophon.

Mathis’s versatility is displayed in her recordings of Bach with Karl Richter; celebrated recordings of Mozart with Karl B?hm; Carlos Kleiber’s legendary Der Freisch?tz; Mahler Symphonies with Kubelik; Berlioz’s Damnation de Faust with Seiji Ozawa; and the role she created in Henze’s 1965 opera Der junge Lord with Christoph von Dohn?nyi. Alongside her operatic roles, Edith Mathis also has an extensive Lieder and oratorio repertory. This collection includes her complete Schumann with Christoph Eschenbach, Mozart songs with Bernhard Klee, vocal ensembles by Brahms and Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch with Karl Engel.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Bach Edition: Complete Works (160CD Box Set) (2001) MP3

2001 | Classical
MP3 320 Kbps | 22.07 gb

Brilliant Classics embarked on a daring project in the year 2000, the year of the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death: this budget label decided to release a complete set of Bach's works. They were not the only label to do so - Teldec and Haenssler both did as well - but the Brilliant Classics set stands out for several reasons. First, they attempted (though did not fully succeed) to create a complete set entirely recorded on period instruments, using historically informed performances. As their web site states, "The new recordings follow scrupulously the newest developments and insights offered by the leading Early Music scholars as regards the performance practice of Baroque music in general and the music of Bach in particular." Well, not all the instruments are truly period instruments, and one cannot say the that performances are 100% historically informed, but this is not much of a problem, and there is no reason for this to be seen as essentially negative.
This set stands out for one very important reason: some 65% of the 160 CDs in this set were newly recorded (the remainder was licensed from other labels), including Bach's almost 200 sacred cantatas. The scale of this project is such that one could call it folly. Recording 200 cantatas - or about 60 hours of music - in 15 months is as mad as building a cathedral or digging a tunnel across the English Channel. In fact, one could think that any conductor who would be willing to attempt such a feat is simple crazy.
Not at all. In fact, if one thing stands out in this set, it is the 60 CDs of sacred cantatas, recorded in unique conditions, by a man who had never recorded any such quantity of music before.
