Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Clear communication can influence teamwork, customer relationships, workplace confidence, and career progression. For employees who use English as an additional language, professional communication may involve more than knowing grammar or everyday vocabulary. They may need to explain complex ideas, follow fast-paced conversations, write concise emails, respond diplomatically, participate in meetings, and present information to different audiences. This course develops the language and communication strategies required for these common workplace situations without suggesting that learners must remove their natural accents or cultural identities.
The United States has a highly diverse workforce. Foreign-born workers represented19.1% of the US civilian labor force in 2025, meaning that almost 1 in every 5 labor-force participants was born outside the country. The US Census Bureau also reported that nearly68 million people aged 5 and older spoke a language other than English at home in 2019. These figures demonstrate why inclusive and effective workplace communication matters across healthcare, education, technology, hospitality, construction, administration, customer service, and many other industries. US Bureau of Labor Statistics and US Census Bureau
The course begins with the foundations of workplace communication, including purpose, audience, tone, communication channels, cultural awareness, and professional etiquette. Learners will then build vocabulary for common workplace activities, responsibilities, schedules, problems, requests, customer interactions, and collaborative tasks. Speaking and listening modules address clear delivery, clarification, confirmation, active listening, note-taking, instructions, feedback, and workplace conversations. These skills can help learners communicate more accurately while reducing avoidable misunderstandings.
The final modules focus on professional writing, meetings, and presentations. Learners will examine how to structure emails, messages, summaries, requests, updates, and other workplace documents using clear and respectful language. They will also study meeting participation, turn-taking, expressing agreement or disagreement, asking questions, presenting recommendations, and responding to audience questions. By connecting vocabulary, speaking, listening, writing, and presentation skills, the course offers a structured path toward more confident workplace English across in-person, remote, and hybrid environments.
