Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence. It was used to partially generate the thumbnail and to verify certain affirmations. There is a question that comes up in almost every meeting where American AI regulation is discussed, and it sounds simple: which law applies to us? The honest answer is that it depends on where your users live, what decisions your systems influence, what industry you operate in, and what month it is.
That answer satisfies nobody, and it is also the single most important thing to understand before anything else.
The United States has no comprehensive federal AI statute. What it has instead is a working environment made of executive orders, agencies applying laws written long before anyone deployed a language model, a growing body of state legislation that contradicts itself across borders, and an active federal effort to invalidate a good part of that state legislation in court.
This course is a working map of that environment. Not a survey of every bill introduced, because there were more than a thousand of those in a single year and most went nowhere. What you get is the set of rules actually in force, the federal actions that actually change behaviour, and the practices that hold up whether or not the current legal fight resolves in your favour.
You will trace the federal layer from EO 14110 through the 2025 reversal to EO 14365 and the National Policy Framework. You will understand the preemption fight, the DOJ AI Litigation Task Force, and why an executive order cannot repeal a state law. You will map the state patchwork including California, Texas, Illinois, New York, and the Colorado saga, and learn how reach attaches to your company based on where your customers are, not where your office is.
The course covers sector-specific obligations in employment, healthcare, financial services, and consumer-facing AI that already bind you today. It then shows you how to use NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001 as a practical backbone, where voluntary frameworks acquire real legal weight as safe harbours, and why choosing one control set beats chasing statutes.
The final modules build a program that survives scrutiny: inventory, risk classification, impact assessments, roles and human oversight, vendor and procurement controls, incident handling, and audit readiness. It closes with cross-border reconciliation against the EU AI Act and your first ninety days.
No legal background required. This is education, not legal advice, and it teaches you both the current picture and how that picture is generated, so you know what changed when it changes.
