Das Spiel bricht mit einigen Konventionen der Reihe. Beispielsweise treten viele der schwächeren Gegner nicht mehr einzeln, sondern in größeren Gruppen auf.
Link wiederum kann sich freier bewegen denn je zuvor: Um sich einen besseren Überblick über seine Umgebung zu verschaffen,
kann er Türme und riesige Bauwerke erklimmen und als Gipfelstürmer jeden Berg besteigen.
Mit dem Gleitschirm schwebt er anschließend wieder talwärts, und wenn ihm das zu langsam geht, nutzt er einfach seinen Schild als Untersatz für eine rasante Rutschpartie!

Selbst die Wetterverhältnisse ändern sich in dieser dynamischen Welt immer wieder, und wenn Link überleben soll,
müssen die Spieler dies berücksichtigen. Ein plötzlicher Platzregen kann jedes Lagerfeuer löschen,
bei Gewitter können metallische Waffen Blitze anziehen. Außerdem sollte Link stets auf die richtige Kleidung achten,
denn seine Reise führt ihn durch die unterschiedlichsten Gebiete mit verschiedenen Klimazonen.
