Software ist ein deutsches Musiker-Duo, das ausschließlich Elektronische Musik komponierte und spielte.
Die Band wurde 1984 gegründet und bestand aus den beiden Künstlern Peter Mergener (* 1951) und Michael Weisser (* 1948). Vor Software nannte sich das Duo Mergener&Weisser.
Die LPs und CDs der Band erschienen unter dem Label IC (Innovative Communication), das damals dem Elektro-Musiker Klaus Schulze gehörte und auf dem zahlreiche weitere elektronische Musiker, aber auch die Neue Deutsche Welle-Gruppe Ideal, spielten.
In den Jahren 1990 bis 1992 produzierte Weisser, bei vorübergehender Trennung von Mergener, vier Alben unter dem Namen Software mit unterschiedlicher Besetzung: Fragrance mit Klaus Schulze und Georg Stettner (* 1970) und Modesty-Blaze I. und II. sowie Cave mit Billy Byte (alias Stephan Töteberg).
Nach der Auflösung von Software im Jahre 1999 gingen die Musiker getrennte Wege: Peter Mergener komponiert und spielt weiterhin elektronische Musik, während Michael Weisser zunächst die Formation G.E.N.E. gründete und heute unter anderem als "Medienkünstler" aktiv ist.
