Considered one of the most important heavy metal bands of its generation, Pantera was formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas, by brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul Abbott (drums), who were later joined by Rex Brown (bass) and Phil Anselmo (vocals). Initially oriented towards glam metal, the band radically changed its sound in the early 1990s with Cowboys from Hell (1990), marking the birth of their signature style: groove metal.
Pantera forged a powerful and hard-hitting sound, dominated by Dimebag's razor-sharp riffs and Anselmo's ferocious vocals. The albums Vulgar Display of Power (1992) and Far Beyond Driven (1994) became milestones of modern metal-the latter reaching number one on the Billboard 200, a first for such a brutal record. Their music, which was both aggressive and technically refined, embodied the anger and pride of a post-grunge generation.
A year after the band's breakup in 2003, Dimebag Darrell was tragically shot and killed on stage, marking the end of an era. Pantera remains a metal legend, and their legacy continues to inspire the boldest bands on the global scene.
