Die Welt des animierten 2D-Adventures Night in the Woods ist bevölkert von aufrecht gehenden und sprechenden Tieren, die sich wie Menschen verhalten. Der Spieler übernimmt die Hauptfigur Mae, eine Katze, die das College abgebrochen hat und in ihre Heimatstadt Possum Springs zurückkehrt. Er muss herausfinden, was sich in den Wäldern in und um die Stadt herum verbirgt. Dazu durchläuft er die Spielwelt und interagiert mit unterschiedlichen Charakteren. Das Spiel setzt seinen Fokus stark auf die Geschichte und die Charakterzeichnung. Die Stimmung ist durchgehend melancholisch.
