Von der Antike ("Rome") abermals ins Mittelalter führt die neueste Auskopplung der "Total War"-Reihe. Dem Spieler obliegt es, in welchem Ausmaß Handel, Diplomatie, Spionage, Religion und Kriegsführung die Expansion seines Reichs beeinflussen. Details wie unterschiedliche Gesichter, Waffen und Pferde sorgen für gewohnte Grafikpracht. Die Belagerungen sind kniffliger als in "Rome", da die KI-Tuppen nicht mehr nur wartend auf den Mauern verharren, sondern auf jeden Zug des menschlichen Gegners reagieren. Im Multiplayermodus können 21 Partien gespielt werden. Verschiedene Modi, wie eigene Schlacht, Schlachtszenario oder schnelles Spiel stehen zur Wahl.
