Spectacular makeup, flamboyant costumes, and pyrotechnic displays: the American band Kiss made its mark in the 1970s with albums like Alive! (1975) and Destroyer (1976). In 1973 in New York, guitarist Paul Stanley and bassist Gene Simmons decided to form a rock band called Kiss. But faced with the failure of their first album, the two founders took a turn for the worse and embraced extravagance. Joined by drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley, they created imaginary characters with a theatrical and provocative look: Gene Simmons and his legendary long tongue became The Demon, Paul Stanley, The Starchild, Ace Frehley, The Spaceman, and Peter Criss, The Catman.
Musically, Kiss developed a style that blended hard rock and heavy metal, heralding the glam rock aesthetic of the 1980s. In 1979, Kiss produced one of rock's most powerful anthems, "I Was Made For Lovin' You," a worldwide hit with a disco feel. In the 1980s, the band decided to remove their makeup to relaunch their career in a more glam metal-oriented era. But faced with the nostalgia of their fans, the members readopted their period costumes in 1996. Kiss has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and an iconic slogan: "You wanted the best, you got the best!" After several farewell tours, Kiss remains an essential icon of global rock and a stroke of marketing genius.
