Description
"This course contains the use of artificial intelligence."
Welcome to theIEC TS 62786-1 & IEC TS 62786-3: DER & BESS Grid Integration course.
This technical training programme is designed to provide a structured understanding of the requirements and engineering concepts associated withDistributed Energy Resources (DERs) andstationary Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) connected to electrical distribution networks.
As renewable energy generation and battery energy storage become increasingly important in modern power systems, engineers and technical professionals need to understand how these resources interact with the grid. This course focuses on the key concepts ofgrid connection, operation, control, protection, communication, synchronization, operating limits, and disturbance ride-through presented throughout the course material.
What You Will Learn
The course begins with the fundamentals of theDER grid-interface concept and gradually develops an understanding of how a grid-connected resource operates under normal and abnormal electrical conditions.
You will exploreIEC TS 62786-1 concepts related to grid-connected DERs, including frequency and voltage operating boundaries, active and reactive power control, Volt-Watt and Volt-Var response, transient behaviour, ride-through requirements, synchronization, islanding detection, autoreclose coordination, telemetry, communication, and interface protection.
The course also introducesIEC TS 62786-3 concepts related to stationary BESS and their interaction with the distribution network. You will learn about BESS architecture, the Battery Storage Subsystem, Power Conversion Subsystem, Point of Connection, charging and discharging modes, standby operation, response time, regulation time, frequency and voltage operating limits, and grid-disturbance immunity.
Key Technical Topics
Throughout the course, you will study important technical concepts such as
Distributed Energy Resources and grid integration, including the role of DERs as active participants in modern electrical networks.
Frequency operating requirements, including continuous and limited operating regions and the relationship between frequency deviation and operating time.
Voltage operating requirements, including voltage envelopes, per-unit voltage concepts, and voltage-dependent operating conditions.
Active and reactive power control, including frequency response, voltage support, Volt-Watt and Volt-Var functions.
Grid disturbance ride-through, includingROCOF, UVRT, and OVRT concepts.
BESS architecture and operation, including charging, discharging, standby, battery storage, power conversion, and the Point of Connection.
Grid synchronization and reconnection, including voltage, frequency, phase-angle, and phase-sequence considerations.
Protection and islanding, including passive and active islanding detection, protection timing, autoreclose coordination, and controlled disconnection.
Communication and telemetry, including monitoring information, operator interaction, and communication architecture.
Protection reliability and fault tolerance, including interface protection and single-fault considerations.
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is suitable forelectrical engineers, power-system engineers, renewable-energy professionals, BESS engineers, testing and commissioning engineers, consultants, system integrators, utility professionals, technicians, engineering students, and technical personnel interested in DER and BESS grid integration.
It can also be useful for professionals involved inelectrical system design, grid connection, protection, control, testing, commissioning, compliance, and distribution-network operation.
Prerequisites
No advanced prerequisites are required.
A basic understanding of electrical engineering and power-system concepts such asvoltage, current, frequency, active power, reactive power, and electrical networks will be helpful.
Prior experience with DER, renewable energy, or BESS is beneficial but not mandatory.
No special software or programming skills are required to follow the course.
Course Approach
The course uses technical diagrams, operating envelopes, control characteristics, architecture diagrams, protection sequences, and practical engineering explanations to make the subject easier to understand.
Rather than simply presenting terminology, the course focuses on understanding the relationship betweengrid conditions, DER/BESS measurements, control actions, protection decisions, and system response.
The objective is to help learners develop a clear technical picture of what happens at the grid interface during both normal operation and disturbances.
After Completing the Course
After completing the course, learners should have a stronger understanding of how DERs and stationary BESS interact with distribution networks and how technical requirements relate togrid operation, control, protection, communication, and compliance considerations.
You will be better prepared to discuss and evaluate DER and BESS grid-integration requirements in engineering, testing, commissioning, design, and professional learning activities.
Start Your Learning Journey
Whether you are working on renewable-energy projects, BESS installations, distribution-network integration, protection and control, testing and commissioning, or simply looking to expand your knowledge of modern power systems, this course provides a structured introduction to the technical concepts associated withIEC TS 62786-1 and IEC TS 62786-3.
