Using a smallish ensemble, Scimone attains high levels of dynamic contrast (especially in the slow movements) and exciting variety of attack. I Solisti Veneti tears into the faster sections with arresting ferocity, uncommon depth and gravity since the players aren't reluctant to apply the kind of bow pressure that's more akin to 19th or 20th century performing practice than anything Vivaldi might have expected--but who could deny its effectiveness here?
So if you're sometimes inclined to think that one Vivaldi concerto sounds pretty much like the others, the diversity and freshness of approach here might well alter your mindset.”
