Long before he embarked on his solo career, Lionel Richie found fame as a member of The Commodores. Formed in 1968, the group quickly rose to prominence in the '70s as one of the leading acts in funk and soul, delivering timeless classics like "Easy" (1977), "Three Times a Lady" (1978), and the instrumental ballad "Machine Gun" (1974).
As Richie began leaning toward pop-oriented compositions in the early '80s, it set the stage for his solo success. He left The Commodores in 1982, the same year he released his debut solo album. The following year, he achieved global stardom with Can't Slow Down (1983), which went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide.
Though they've undergone lineup changes and slowed down over the years, The Commodores never officially disbanded. Today, the group continues to perform with members Walter "Clyde" Orange, James Dean "J.D." Nicholas, and William "WAK" King, joined by their five-piece band, The Mean Machine.
