In this second class of my series on improving our personal productivity, I want to build upon the foundations that were laid down in the first course and explore the Pilot, Plane, Engineer analogy in more depth. I hope that through the concepts, principles and theories that were discussed in the first class, and the more practical advice offered in this class, you'll be able to work towards living a happier, healthier and more productive life.
Section One The Pilot
Following a brief recap of the Productivity equation from the first class, in the first section we'll look at the role of the pilot and the importance of 'Setting The Course' which is fundamentally built around two key ideas of organisation and prioritisation. We'll split this section into 3 main areas - short, medium and long term - and explore topics including scheduling, task management, areas of focus and goals as well as developing a vision and purpose.
Section Two The Plane
The second section looks at the 'The Plane' - an area where we should be spending 80% of our time but also the area where many people struggle. In this section, we'll explore ideas involving motivation, focus and consistency through the analogy of 'taking off' (getting started) and 'staying on course' (maintaining output and avoiding distractions). We'll examine key techniques to help you manage your time and improve your productivity by making the Plane as effective and efficient as possible.
Section Three The Engineer
Finally, we turn to The Engineer - the section associated with optimisation and efficiency. The Engineer's job is 3-fold: to figure out processes and systems to make the Plane (a) faster, (b) more fuel-efficient, (c) organised. In other words, this section will explore ways to increase our overall speed at doing things as well as design our systems in a way that means we use less energy and operate more effectively.

We'll break down (1) how to understand our content using techniques like the Feynman Method, Active Recall and various note-taking strategies, (2) how to remember our material with Spaced Repetition, Interleaving and various memory techniques, and (3) how to maintain focus while studying, from developing the motivation and discipline to do the work, to taking appropriate breaks and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
I was a medical student at Cambridge University (UK) from 2012-2018. In my second year of medical school, I discovered the research around effective studying and memory enhancement, and it completely changed my life. By using the strategies you'll learn in this class, I was able to start and grow a 6-figure business and later a successful YouTube channel while still getting pretty decent marks in my exams, and actually enjoying the whole process with a minimal level of stress.
Now that I'm a doctor working in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), I still use these techniques when preparing teaching sessions for medical students, and when preparing for my own postgraduate medical exams. I'm teaching this class to share my process with you so you can learn the drawing secret it has taken me years to discover: the most beautiful drawings are often the most simple drawings.

In this class I'll teach you how to get started drawing your own beautiful life-like pencil portraits. We'll cover:
Materials. Which materials and references will make for the best portraits.
Basic*Sketching. How to compose your basic sketch through gesture and accurate proportions.

Features and Forms. How to structure the forms of your subject's eyes, nose, mouth, and hair.

Drawing portraits. In this class, you'll learn how to draw your own beautiful, lifelike portraits. Gabrielle will discuss:
Graphite pencil techniques
Proportions and measuring tricks
Other tips, which will help you create beautiful portraits
Creating your own. With Gabrielle's help, you'll use this class to get started on your own pencil portrait. You'll be invited to collaborate with classmates from all over the world, and to share your project for feedback.
Using materials. You'll learn which materials make for the best portraits, and the other tools you need as you begin drawing realistic, dynamic works of art. Gabrielle will make specific recommendations about:
Pencils and erasers that you should use
Ways to hold your pencil to create different tones
The correct way to blend, in order to keep your dark and light strokes distinct
Ways to make textures in your drawings by using a simple eraser technique.
Relying on references. Gabrielle will give you tips on what makes a photo a good reference tool, and how to break it down, in order to analyze its shadows, lights, and shapes more clearly. You'll learn how to add drama to your portraits, and how to work with light and dark values, in order to make more successful drawings.
Sketching. In this pencil drawing tutorial, Gabrielle will help you understand how to compose your basic sketch with gesture drawings and accurate proportions. By using the simple rule of thirds and other measurements, you'll learn how to divide the face accurately, and how to place eyes, brows, the bottom of the nose, the lips, and the hairline. As Gabrielle demonstrates the way she sketches, she will narrate her thought process and explain her techniques, so that you can easily follow along as she works.
