This intermediate (pushing advanced) level course discusses fluid effects in Houdini. Profs Jonathan Gilbert and John Moncrief will help members become familiar with Houdini's Dynamics Operators (DOPs) and the different fluid types: SPH, Voxel-Based and FLIP fluids. With this knowledge you will endeavor in a production oriented project to integrate a cg water fountain into a live action background plate. We will explore Houdini's Rigid Body Dynamics (RBD) for collision detection, FLIP fluids for the bulk of the water effects, DOPs Forces for wind, foam and spray using some built in shelf tools (whitecaps) and lastly, lighting, shading, rendering and compositing the final image.

Gilbert is a freelance VFX artist with over six years of Houdini experience. He graduated with his MFA in 3D Animation and Visual Effects with a concentration in fluid dynamics from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He then worked at Side Effects Software Inc. building and teaching a series of basic and intermediate Pyro Effects classes in Santa Monica. More recently, Jonathan finished working on the last Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 as a Technical Director at Gradient Effects. Moncrief started working in VFX over ten years ago and has experience in Houdini, Maya, 3ds Max, After Effects, Shake, and just about every NLE you can think of. John just wrapped up 6 months working at Side Effects Software Inc. in Santa Monica where he created a library of Houdini training courses on FLIP fluids, DOPs and VOPs for industry professionals from various studios including Blizzard, Sony Entertainment and DreamWorks. Genre: eLearning | Language: English

This course will introduce you to Apache Kafka and provide a thorough tour of its architecture so you can start building your next enterprise system with it.

What open source system does Netflix, Twitter, LinkedIn, Uber, and AirBnb have in common that enables them to process hundreds of billions of messages per day? Apache Kafka. In today's enterprises, working with large amounts of data is no longer limited to internet-scale companies - every IT professional must be prepared with solutions to capture, maintain, and move terabytes of data reliably and at blistering speeds. Apache Kafka was designed to address large-scale, data movement problems and has enabled thousands of companies large and small to achieve successes not otherwise achievable with existing messaging systems. In this course, Getting Started with Apache Kafka, you will get a thorough understanding of Apache Kafka's architecture and how it has adopted proven distributed systems design principles that enable it to scale and perform reliably. Then, you will breakdown this architecture into individual components and learn about each in great detail. Finally, you will use the components in action with common scenarios and walkthough how Apache Kafka solutions can be developed in Java. By the end of the course, you will have an understanding and appreciation for why Apache Kafka is taking the industry by storm but most importantly, you will come away with confidence and knowledge to build your next generation big data solutions with Apache Kafka.

How To Clean Sunglass Reflections In Photoshop
Duration: 12m | Video: h264, yuv420p, 1280x720 30fps | Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, 2 ch | 234 MB
Genre: eLearning | Language: English

In this lesson I'll teach you how to clean and replace reflections in Photoshop. The idea is to still keep the image realistic. The process will involve creating two new layers, one for each lens of the sunglasses. I then use the pen tool to make a circular selection of each lens. Make sure when you make your selection that the feathering is set to zero. I also save my selection so I can come back if I need to make any changes.

For the next step I need to choose our foreground colour to fill the lens. Using the colour picker, I select a darker colour. I then choose a brown colour for background using the colour picker. Our next step involves using the gradient tool. Make sure your selection is active on the right channel. In the gradient tool I select the first option 'foreground to background.' Holding down shift, we make a vertical selection. To remove the lines created by using the gradient tool, I go to the filter menu and apply some noise. Apply this technique to both lenses (layers).
I then apply a mask after grouping our layers. Remember to switch back to black and white foreground and background colours respectively. Use the brush to paint in the eyes and brush out the polyboard. For the final touch we create another layer and load our selection. Using the gradient tool, a white foreground colour and the selection 'foreground into transparent' I make a small gradient from bottom to top. Adjust the opacity to get the perfect effect. Apply to both selections (lenses).
