Maya to Aztec - Ancient Mesoamerica Revealed

Genre: eLearning Video / History, Civilizations, Culture
Five hundred years ago, Spanish conquistadors searching for gold and new lands to settle stumbled on a group of independent city-states in Mesoamerica, a region extending for more than a thousand miles from the desert of northern Mexico to the rain forest of Central America. Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, social organization, the arts, agriculture, engineering, and trade.

In many ways more advanced than European nations, these societies were the equal of the world's greatest civilizations, with remarkable achievements including the following:

Cities: The Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, was more populous than any city in Europe and featured unprecedented public amenities, among them one of the largest public markets in the world.
Time-keeping: The Maya created a calendar that could record their history down to the day over spans of thousands of years-a feat achieved by few other early civilizations.
Foods: The most planted crop on Earth today, corn, was domesticated thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica, along with beans, squashes, chocolate, and other foods now consumed everywhere.
Writing: Writing was independently invented just five times in the history of the world-once by the Maya, whose elaborate writing system was only deciphered in the late 20th century.
Mathematics: Maya mathematics is so complex that we don't yet know all it can do. The system is among the first ever to use zero, which is indispensible for practical and advanced calculations.

But the ancient Mesoamericans were also deeply mystifying. Their art was filled with strange images of serpents, birds, jaguars, and humans with fantastically adorned headdresses. Their cities were dominated by ceremonial pyramids, thousands of which were built throughout the region. Their most popular rituals included a bruising ball game played to propitiate the gods. And their most notorious practice was human sacrifice, performed frequently and sometimes with hundreds of victims slaughtered in a single ceremony.

Although the Spanish eventually conquered all of Mesoamerica, much remains of the original culture. Beautiful artifacts fill museums. Impressive ruins dot the landscape. And millions of descendants of ancient Mesoamericans still live in their ancestral homes, speaking native languages and practicing time-honored traditions. It's no wonder that Mesoamerica is a must-see destination for travelers with an urge to step into an extraordinary past.

Maya to Aztec: Ancient Mesoamerica Revealed immerses you in this epic story with 48 exhilarating half-hour lectures that cover the full scope of Mesoamerican history and culture. Your guide is Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center and a noted archaeologist, explorer, and teacher, whose exploits include the discovery of a lost Maya city.

The countries from Mexico to Costa Rica include more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites related to the pre-Columbian period, plus scores of other ancient sites that are equally worth a visit. These lectures are the ideal way to plan an itinerary, prepare for a tour, or simply sit back and enjoy a thrilling virtual voyage. You will be surprised at the number of sites to explore-many more than you could possibly see in months of travel.

Experience a Golden Age of Discovery

Among his many distinctions, Dr. Barnhart was a student of the famous Maya scholar Linda Schele, who played a pivotal role in deciphering the Maya script and helped spur a new understanding of this preeminent Mesoamerican civilization. In Maya to Aztec, you hear how the keys to deciphering the Maya hieroglyphs, which had frustrated generations of code breakers, suddenly fell into place at a conference organized by Schele in 1973. Since then, the marvelous world of the Maya has been revealed in far more rich detail, shedding new light on their history, mythology, rituals, monuments, and arts.

These discoveries, plus the exciting revelations of current archaeological work throughout Mesoamerica, make today a golden age of studies in the field and the perfect time to immerse yourself in this entrancing subject.

Maya, Aztec, and More...

The course focuses in depth on two cultures: the Maya, who have been in Mesoamerica for thousands of years, and the Aztecs, who mysteriously appeared late and rose swiftly to power. The Aztecs fell from power just as precipitously; their empire controlled the region for less than a century, until the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1500s. You learn what these two groups shared and what made them so different. For example, why did the Aztecs use chocolate beans for money yet apparently had gold for the taking, while the Maya had little interest in the metal so coveted by Europeans? And why were the Aztecs so quickly defeated by the conquistadors, while the Maya resisted the invaders for generations? In addition, you will see how the contrasting histories of the Aztecs and Maya continue to have repercussions in modern-day Mexico and Guatemala, helping to explain the complex politics of that part of the world.

Furthermore, ancient Mesoamerica was a crossroads of many different cultures, and you also learn about these major civilizations:

Olmec: Famed for colossal stone heads, the Olmecs flourished more than 3,500 years ago and were one of Mesoamerica's first complex societies. Study their beautiful and inscrutable art for clues about their way of life.
Zapotec: The Zapotecs established one of the earliest major cities in Mesoamerica, Monte Alban, located on a strategic mountaintop overlooking the spectacular Valley of Oaxaca. Take a tour of the well-preserved ruins at this fascinating site.
Mixtec: In 1932 an archaeologist at Monte Alban discovered a tomb as rich as an Egyptian pharaoh's. But this was not a Zapotec grave; it belonged to a later people called the Mixtec. Learn about their culture and their powerful ruler called Eight Deer Jaguar Claw.
Toltec: Revered by the Aztecs and more recently the purported source of mystical teachings, the Toltecs are one of the great question marks of Mesoamerican history. Investigate what is actually known about this enigmatic culture.
Tarascan: A rival power to the Aztecs, the Tarascans have traits that connect them to the Inca in Peru. Discover that they are not the only Mesoamerican civilization with intriguing links to peoples far to the south and north.

Investigate the Controversies

Maya to Aztec is richly illustrated with Professor Barnhart's own photos taken in the field, along with museum-grade images of artifacts, illustrations recreating ancient cities and temples, maps showing where to find different sites, and graphics that decode Mesoamerican writing and iconography.

Steeped in this subject for his entire professional career, Dr. Barnhart knows the arguments on all sides of the most important controversies, and he often has his own well-thought-out theories to contribute, making this course an exciting glimpse of exploration, theorizing, and discovery in action.

Among the mysteries and controversies you investigate are these:

The Maya calendar: The elaborate time-keeping inscriptions of the Maya have sparked many sensational interpretations, such as a purported end of world in 2012. Dr. Barnhart shows that the true meanings involved rebirth, a cyclical view of history, and major turning points in Maya civilization.
Human sacrifice: No subject so shocked outside observers, including the ruthless conquistadors, as human sacrifice. The key is to see this ritual in its broader religious context, which included auto-sacrifice-or self-mutilation-practiced by the ruling elite.
Ball game: American football has been around for 150 years, but the Mesoamerican ball game has been played for 3,500 years. Explore the debate over the social functions of this risky sport, which used a solid rubber ball weighing as much as nine pounds.
Maya collapse: Why would a civilization at the height of power systematically abandon its cities? Dr. Barnhart discusses the leading theories and then looks at evidence that the Maya obsession with cycles of time may have been the decisive factor.
Ancient observatory: The massive tower called El Caracol in the Maya city of Chichen Itza is thought to be an ancient astronomical observatory. But how was it used? Are the many celestial alignments connected with it intentional or accidental?

Professor Barnhart also spotlights the momentous encounter that transformed Mesoamerica forever. Near the end of the course, he describes the march of Hern?n Cortés and his small army of Spanish troops from Veracruz to the Aztec capital at Tenochtitlan in 1519. There the Aztec ruler, Moctezuma II, welcomed the foreigners with gifts of gold. Heedless of the Aztecs' vastly superior strength, Cortés waged war and in less than two years defeated the entire Aztec empire. Dr. Barnhart evaluates the conflicting historical accounts of this astonishing conquest, which had a profound impact on the New World and the Old.

One who was affected was the great German artist Albrecht Dürer. In 1520 he visited Brussels and saw an exhibit of Aztec artifacts sent to the Holy Roman Emperor by Cortés. "All the days of my life," Dürer wrote in his diary, "I have seen nothing that rejoiced my heart so much as these things, for I saw amongst them wonderful works of art, and I marveled at the subtle ingenuity of men of foreign lands."

With Maya to Aztec, you, too, will marvel at the accomplishments and genius of an exceptional group of civilizations, which were among the greatest the world has ever known.

TTC Video - The Black Death: The World's Most Devastating Plague
Course No. 8241 | .M4V, AVC, 730 kbps, 852x480 | English, AAC, 160 kbps, 2 Ch | 24x30 mins | + PDF Guidebook | 5.45 GB
Lecturer: Dorsey Armstrong, Ph.D.

In the late 1340s, a cataclysmic plague shook medieval Europe to its core. The bacterial disease known to us as the Black Death swept westward across the continent, leaving a path of destruction from Crimea and Constantinople to Italy, France, Spain, and ultimately most of Europe, traveling as far west as England and Iceland. Within these locations, the plague killed up to 50% of the population in less than 10 years-a staggering 75 million dead.

Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But three vital elements of the story often go unrecognized:

The Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural.
In its wake, the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the Church, political institutions, law, art, and more.
In large measure, by the profundity of the changes it brought, the Black Death produced the modern world we live in today.

While the story of the Black Death is one of destruction and loss, its breathtaking scope and effects make it one of the most compelling and deeply intriguing episodes in human history. Understanding the remarkable unfolding of the plague and its aftermath provides a highly revealing window not only on the medieval world but also on the forces that brought about the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, and modernity itself.

Speaking to the full magnitude of this world-changing historical moment, The Black Death: The World's Most Devastating Plague, taught by celebrated medievalist Dorsey Armstrong of Purdue University, takes you on an unforgettable excursion into the time period of the plague, its full human repercussions, and its transformative effects on European civilization.

A Catastrophe Unprecedented in Human Experience

In 24 richly absorbing lectures, you'll follow the path of the epidemic in its complete trajectory across medieval Europe. You'll examine the epidemiological causes of the disaster; the social panic it spawned; its influence on religion, society, politics, economics, and art; and the long-term consequences for a continent that, less than two centuries later, would have the technology and the wherewithal to explore a new world.

In the process, you'll learn about these remarkable and emblematic effects of the Black Death:

By revealing the corruption and inadequacies of the Church in the face of people's desperate need, the plague sowed the seeds of the Reformation.
The plague upended the class system in Europe, permanently changing the balance of power between laborers and lords, peasants and nobles.
The epidemic transformed social opportunities for the working and merchant classes: peasants could become clergy, serfs could become tenant farmers, merchants could marry into the nobility, and women could enter trades and professions.
Perhaps most surprising of all, those who survived the plague were often wealthier than they'd been before, and had access to more opportunities.

These changes utterly upended structures of social, economic, and religious power that had been in place for centuries, leaving chaos in their wake-and room for new ideas and institutions to arise.

An Epic Story of Loss and Metamorphosis

In measuring the Black Death's vast societal impact, you'll explore subject matter such as:

The medical causes and underpinnings of the plague - Investigate the epidemiology of Yersinia pestis, the plague bacterium. You'll study the three main varieties of plague, how the disease was transmitted, and how other disease factors may have contributed to the Black Death's monumental devastation.
The epidemic's transit across medieval Europe - Track how the plague traveled by both maritime and overland trade routes, and witness the individual stories and shattering drama of its arrival in communities such as Florence, Avignon, Walsham, and Paris.
The Black Death's impact on religion and faith - Discover how the Church appeared powerless to provide any remedy or relief from the plague, which eroded its prestige, moral authority, and temporal power. Observe how direct expressions of religious devotion by common people, such as pilgrimage, flagellation, and veneration of saints, increased dramatically in response to the plague's ravages.
The plague and European economies - Examine how the huge loss of labor and manpower led to social mobility and greatly increased economic opportunities for workers and merchants, and accelerated the rise of the merchant class to rival the economic power of the nobility.
Political reverberations of the Black Death - Grasp how the political scene in many places changed dramatically, as nobles came under new economic pressure. The traditional ruling order of those who fight (nobles), those who pray (clergy), and those who work (everyone else) was undone by the new power of labor and trade, and the nobles' attempts to maintain their previous status triggered unrest and revolts.
The historical legacy of the epidemic - Take account of the ways in which the events of the Black Death shaped the future of the West, leaving behind a world in which serfs could buy their freedom, and where, for the first time, leaders and governments were answerable to every level of society.

The Astonishing Human Dimensions of the Plague

In a masterful act of historical storytelling, Professor Armstrong reveals the unfolding of the plague as an endlessly surprising and enthralling saga, illuminating the story with vivid maps, works of art, and manuscripts, as well as gripping contemporary accounts by writers such as Boccaccio and Petrarch. In the course of the narrative, you'll encounter the full spectrum of poignant human reactions to the epidemic, from terrified families abandoning their stricken children and clergy recoiling from the dying to astounding individual acts of compassion and self-sacrifice for loved ones and strangers alike.

You'll bear witness to many psychosocial responses, among them the Flagellant movement, whose members publicly tortured themselves to appease the wrath of God; the French town whose populace believed riotous merrymaking would keep the plague at bay; and a range of extreme behavior from hedonistic indulgence and crazed dancing to the tragic scapegoating of Jewish communities. In a fascinating view into the medieval mindset, you'll explore 14th-century theories of the plague, from theological constructs to explanations of its origins in astrological conjunctions, "corrupted air," and earthquakes. You'll also encounter, in medical treatises, the singular figure of the plague doctor, dressed in broad-brimmed hat, long coat, and a beaked, birdlike mask filled with sweet-smelling herbs.

Professor Armstrong details how the plague brought new forms of visual art, such as the extraordinary paintings of the Danse Macabre and Triumph of Death traditions. In the unusual economic climate of the times, plague-themed works of art were commissioned not only by the nobility, but also by the likes of bakers, gardeners, and blacksmiths. And you'll discover how, in the midst of devastation, the plague directly inspired some of the greatest literary masterpieces the world has ever produced, such as the works of Boccaccio, William Langland, and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Majestic in scope and remarkable in detail, The Black Death: The World's Most Devastating Plague takes you to the heart of one of Western history's most catalytic and galvanizing moments, the effects of which gave us the modern world.

Jumpstart Your First Business Model With This FREE 5-part Course

We live in an age of unparalleled opportunity for innovation. With the advent of the Internet, cloud computing, and open source software, the cost of building products is at an all-time low. Yet, the odds of building successful startups haven™t improved much.

Most startups still fail.

When entrepreneurs get hit by an idea they either rush towards building out their solution or rush towards finding investors. Both of these approaches take a lot of time and energy, and can be overwhelming.

They are also backwards.

The number one reason startups fail is not because they fail to build what they set out to build, but because they spend too much time, money, and effort building the wrong product.

I attribute the entrepreneur™s, often unbridled and singular, passion for the solution as the top contributor to this failure. People place too much emphasis on the original idea but studies conducted on product success and failure tell a different story.

It has been statistically shown that most initial ideas don't work as anticipated. Rather, what separates successful entrepreneurs isn't starting with that perfect idea (or Plan A) but finding a plan that works before running out of resources.

Get up to speed with the building blocks of Angular 2. New technologies and new patterns are emerging on a daily basis. Coding for the front end is extremely demanding, but at the same time more interesting and challenging than ever before. This highly dynamic ecosystem provides huge possibilities to create awesome things.

Learning Angular 2 Directives helps you get on track by introducing you to Google™s brand new Angular 2 web framework. In this video course, you will be guided through the various steps in building real-world Angular 2 components.

We will start by setting up a modern development environment with TypeScript and ES2015 support, and you'll gain an initial understanding of what components are about, how to build them, and how they differ from the directives. We then focus on applying new concepts while building a fictitious dashboard application for a home automation system.

We'll guide you through the process of building reusable Angular 2 components. You will learn about HTML rendering templates, see how to establish a data flow between different components, and even find out how to integrate external libraries. But not only that, we will also focus on how to make our components production-ready and maintainable by applying automated unit and end-to-end testing techniques. As a bonus, you will discover how to bring your Angular 2 components to other environments such as the server side and mobile devices.

Superfoods and Your Health
.MP4, AVC, 1700 kbps, 1280x720 | English, AAC, 192 kbps, 2 Ch | 3 hours | 2.37 GB
Instructors: Scott Paton, Martin Pytela

Eat For Success. Getting Nutrition For Optimal Performance.

It is time to learn how to choose a superfood blend in the overflowing market of protein powders, energy bars, and smoothie recipes. Why do I need a superfood drink, and which one should I choose?

Our focus in making a superfood blend isn't moderating disease symptoms. We focus on creating healthy functions. With abundant health, disease is simply crowded out and replaced with optimal performance.

You can gain good performance back. The momentum of the "normal" downward spiral of declining health and shorter lifespan can be slowed, and eventually reversed to add many precious moments and experiences in the coming years.

Delaying the onset of typical middle-age-related problems, especially the decline in sexual health, is hard to explain to people who did not experience it.

Effects of feeding yourself right will include:

Reduced fat - increased muscle = solid body shape.
Enhanced immune function = resistance to infections.
Enhanced memory, ambition, attitude and brain power.
Reduction of joint and body muscle aches and pains.
Substantial increase in sexual health, interest, ability
Increased stamina for both women and for men
More youthful appearance and body functions
Extended life span quality and quantity.

You will learn about nutrients like Coenzyme Q10, Saffron, Ginkgo Biloba, Bilberry, Siberian Ginseng, Garlic, Vitamins A-&E, Niacin, Vitamin C, Pycnogenols and Bioflavonoids, plus key minerals like Chromium, as well as the Essential Fatty Acids GLA and Omega 3.

The result is understanding how nutrition affects your health, and how it affects your ability to function, which nutrients, and in which amounts are required for optimal performance.

Special Section: Vegetarian Bodybuilders

There is a belief that bodybuilders need meat in order to get the protein they require to build lean muscle mass. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many weight lifters thrive on meatless, even vegan diets. Plant protein can be superior to meat in many ways.

In this special section, we look at Superfoods for high end athletes.

What am I going to get from this course?

Understand what nutrients need to be ingested every day
Understand difference between natural and industrial nutrients
Understand how to construct a healthy meal
