The aim of the second course is to teach the principles of reactive programming. Reactive programming is an emerging discipline which combines concurrency and event-based and asynchronous systems. It is essential for writing any kind of web-service or distributed system and is also at the core of many high-performance concurrent systems. Reactive programming can be seen as a natural extension of higher-order functional programming to concurrent systems that deal with distributed state by coordinating and orchestrating asynchronous data streams exchanged by actors.

In this course you will discover key elements for writing reactive programs in a composable way. You will find out how to apply these building blocks in the construction of message-driven systems that are scalable and resilient.

The course is hands on; most units introduce short programs that serve as illustrations of important concepts and invite you to play with them, modifying and improving them. The course is complemented by a series of assignments, which are also programming projects.

Content:

Week 1: Review of Principles of Functional Programming: substitution model, for-expressions and how they relate to monads. Introduces a new implementation of for-expressions: random value generators. Shows how this can be used in randomized testing and gives an overview of ScalaCheck, a tool which implements this idea.

Week 2: Functional programming and mutable state. What makes an object mutable? How this impacts the substitution model. Extended example: Digital circuit simulation.

Week 3: Futures. Introduces futures as another monad, with for-expressions as concrete syntax. Shows how futures can be composed to avoid thread blocking. Discusses cross-thread error handling.

Week 4: Reactive stream processing. Generalizing futures to reactive computations over streams. Stream operators.

Week 5: Actors. Introduces the Actor Model, actors as encapsulated units of consistency, asynchronous message passing, discusses different message delivery semantics (at most once, at least once, exactly once) and eventual consistency.

Week 6: Supervision. Introduces reification of failure, hierarchical failure handling, the Error Kernel pattern, lifecycle monitoring, discusses transient and persistent state.

Week 7: Conversation Patterns. Discusses the management of conversational state between actors and patterns for flow control, routing of messages to pools of actors for resilience or load balancing, acknowledgement of reception to achieve reliable delivery.

In this course we will seek to "understand Einstein," especially focusing on the special theory of relativity that Albert Einstein, as a 26-year-old patent clerk, introduced in his so-called "miracle year" of 1905. Our goal will be to go behind the myth-making and beyond the popularized presentations of relativity in order to gain a deeper understanding of both Einstein the person and the concepts, predictions, and strange paradoxes of his theory. Some of the questions we will address include: How did Einstein come up with his ideas? What was the nature of his genius? What is the meaning of relativity? What's "special" about the special theory of relativity? Why did the theory initially seem to be dead on arrival? What does it mean to say that time is the "fourth dimension"? Can time actually run more slowly for one person than another, and the size of things change depending on their velocity? Is time travel possible, and if so, how? Why can't things travel faster than the speed of light? Is it possible to travel to the center of the galaxy and return in one lifetime? Is there any evidence that definitively confirms the theory, or is it mainly speculation? Why didn't Einstein win the Nobel Prize for the theory of relativity?

Students may choose one of three approaches to the course: a more quantitative approach, a more qualitative approach, or an auditing approach. The more quantitative approach will include weekly problem sets, while the more qualitative approach will include a creative project relating to the young Einstein and/or the special theory of relativity.

Week One (Einstein in Context): Einstein quotes of the week; a thought experiment involving relativity; physics and Einstein circa 1900.

Week Two (Events, Clocks, and Reference Frames): Einstein quotes of the week; synchronizing clocks; the famous June 1905 paper; thinking more deeply about events and observers; understanding inertial frames of reference; spacetime diagrams; the Galilean transformation; Einstein's starting point: the two postulates.

Week Three (Ethereal Problems and Solutions): Einstein quotes of the week; a few words about waves; the luminiferous ether; the Michelson-Morley experiment vs. stellar aberration; how do you solve a problem like the ether?; the solutions of Fitzgerald, Lorentz, Poincare, and Einstein.

Week Four (The Weirdness Begins): Einstein quotes of the week; the light constancy principle; time and length are suspect; what isn't suspect; exploring the Lorentz factor; the miracle of the muon.

Week Five (Spacetime Switching): Einstein quotes of the week; the Lorentz transformation; leading clocks lag; the ultimate speed limit.

Week Six (Breaking the Spacetime Speed Limit?): Einstein quotes of the week; spacetime diagrams revisited; regions of spacetime; cause and effect, or vice versa?; faster than light paradoxes.

Almost every human endeavour requires some level of persuasion skills. Even if you are the only person involved, you still need to persuade yourself to stay focused and motivated. So it would make sense to develop your hypnotic persuasion skills. To me it is just an application of the 80/20 rule.

A small increase in your persuasive ability means a huge shift in the results that you can get over time. As an experiment think this through for a few moments.

Where do you want to be in the next six months, this time next year and in five years time?
Would using some element of persuasion play any part in securing that future?
If they do how much further forward would you be if you had just a 1% increase in your skills?
If you can see the sense in this you must have looked into developing your hypnotic persuasion skills before. So here is another question for you.

Are you frustrated reading about Powerful, Covert Hypnotic Persuasion Skills and every time you go to learn anything you immediately get plunged into a world of strange phrases, bizarre buzz words and incomprehensible theory?

I went through the same when I first started to learn about hypnotic persuasion skills. I took hundreds of courses, read thousands of books and even did all the exercises however bizarre they seemed. For over thirty years I dedicated myself to studying all the material that was around and several questions kept coming up:

If these guys are so good at hypnotic persuasion skills why aren't they using these skills to train me in these skills?
If these guys are experts in communication why am I so confused by the content of their books and courses?
Do these guys actually use these skills for anything or are they just making a buck trying to teach them to me?

I discovered some Communication Skills Trainers don't use and often don't know how to use the material they are supposed to be delivering to you.

How frustrated would you be after hundreds of hours of studying not being any further forward in learning how to use language patterns in your personal, professional or social life. And then finding out the people that are delivering the content don't know how to use it themselves?

Some NLP Trainers in an effort to look clever have hyped up and overcomplicated Hypnotic Language Patterns to the point of incomprehensibility. But that's not all. How crazy is it that they try and teach you about brain chemistry, motor neurone functions and advanced grammar when all you want is to learn are persuasive patterns that work?

When you want to watch TV do you want someone to explain electricity, how they transmit and receive pictures over the airwaves and the internal workings of a television set or do you want them to explain the buttons on the remote control and just let you pick some programmes to watch?

Some Hypnosis Trainers have gone so far into the theory of how it works that they have forgotten that there was a reason why you want to learn the material in the first place.

I have spoken with hypnosis trainers who will tell you that you should not use hypnotic tools without first asking permission from the "client". I was banned from an NLP Practice group for just suggesting that you could use these tools for sales and business. I have had a variety of hypnotists and NLPers telling me that I am being irresponsible for teaching this material in case someone "dangerous" gets their hand on it.

But there are some Great Trainers out there
You could spend thousands of dollars and several days sat at the feet of the Covert Persuasion Skills Gurus as they distill their wisdom.

It is not just about the time spent on the course though. If you are going to invest a large sum of money, plus the travel and accommodation you really want to make sure you are getting something valuable. So you need to investigate the trainer and spend time evaluating the course to make sure it is exactly what you need.

To get the best value from any course you need to do some pre-course studying. Then when you come home you have to spend your time integrating all the new knowledge into your life before you lose it through non-use. That means post-course self-coaching.

You can get great results this way, I know, I have done enough of it. I get people regularly spend the time and money with me and they get great results but quite frankly there are only a select few that have the resources and opportunity to learn in this fashion.
