Medical School for Everyone: Pediatrics Grand Rounds

Medical School for Everyone: Pediatrics Grand Rounds
The Great Courses / Roy Benaroch | Duration: 12 h 01 m | Video: H264 640x360 | Audio: AAC 48 kHz 2ch | 2,41 GB | Language: English | 2016

****, for all their youth and vigor, aren't indestructible. They're always growing, which makes their health needs different from those of the average adult. Enter pediatricians: trained medical experts whose sole mission is to help children reach their maximum potential.

Pediatrics, which focuses on the medical care of children from birth through adolescence, is one of the most fascinating specialized areas of modern medicine. Treating **** for everything from mild fevers to severe developmental disorders offers doctors an unrivaled set of challenges. For one thing, children often have a harder time communicating how-and what-they're feeling. Furthermore, they're constantly learning and exploring, which makes them especially prone to illness and injury. And the older they get, the more diagnostic complexities arise.

As painful as it can be to see suffering ****, to step into the shoes of a trained pediatrician is to better understand how these medical heroes diagnose common and uncommon illnesses in their young patients. The world of pediatrics makes for an exciting adventure in contemporary medicine, whether you're

• a parent or caretaker who wants to know when (and when not) to worry;
• a practicing pediatrician looking for professional tips and strategies to use on the job;
• a medical student considering pediatrics as a potential field of study; or
• a casual learner hungry for the same medical problem-solving popularized in television and film.

Filled with the same high level of intrigue and insight that he's brought to his other courses in the Medical School for Everyone series, Dr. Roy Benaroch invites you to follow him on more grand rounds cases-this time inside a typical pediatrics office. In Medical School for Everyone: Pediatrics Grand Rounds, you'll don the doctor's white coat for an accessible 24-lecture journey into the world of pediatric medicine. A general pediatrician and professor at Emory University's School of Medicine, Dr. Benaroch introduces you to young patients who'll sometimes test the limits of your knowledge-and challenge a pediatrician's diagnostic skills-as you uncover clues to figure out appropriate diagnoses. And all the while, you'll gain fresh knowledge about the world of pediatrics, including how pediatricians perform general examinations, how they cope with difficult patients (and their parents), and how they address some of the unique medical issues that only children face. You'll also get a glimpse into how the field has evolved over the last century, and where it may be headed in the future.

Understanding the Universe: An Introduction to Astronomy, 2nd Edition

Understanding the Universe: An Introduction to Astronomy, 2nd Edition
The Great Courses / Alex Filippenko | Duration: 49 h 36 m | Video: H264 640x360 | Audio: AAC 44,1 kHz 2ch | 9,65 GB | Language: English | 2007

This visually rich course is designed to provide a nontechnical description of modern astronomy, including the structure and evolution of planets, stars, galaxies, and the Universe as a whole. It includes almost all of the material in my first two astronomy courses for The Teaching Company, produced in 1998 and 2003, but with a large number of new images, diagrams, and animations. The discoveries reported in the 2003 course are integrated throughout these new lectures, and more recent findings (through mid-2006) are included, as well. Much has happened in astronomy during the past few years; we will discuss the most exciting and important advances.

Astronomical objects have been explored with breathtaking data obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the Keck 10-meter telescopes, planetary probes, and other modern instruments. We will explore amazing phenomena, such as quasars, exploding stars, neutron stars, and black holes, and we will see how they increase our understanding of the physical principles of nature. We will also investigate recent newsworthy topics, such as the Cassini mission to Saturn, evidence for liquid water on ancient Mars, the discovery of many small bodies beyond Neptune in our Solar System, the detection of numerous planets around other stars, the nonzero mass of ghostly neutrinos, enormously powerful gamma-ray bursts, the conclusive evidence for a supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, the determination of the age of the Universe, the discovery of a long-range repulsive effect accelerating the expansion of the Universe, and progress in the unification of nature's fundamental forces. Scientifically reasonable speculations regarding the birth of the Universe, the possibility of multiple universes, and the probability of extraterrestrial life are also included.

This course concentrates on the most exciting aspects of our fantastic Universe and on the methods astronomers have used to develop an understanding of it. The lectures present, in clear and simple terms, explanations of how the Universe "works," as well as the interrelationships among its components. Reliance on basic mathematics and physics is minimal but appropriate in some sections to deepen the interested viewer's quantitative understanding of the material.

Law School for Everyone: Legislation and Regulation (The Great Courses)

Law School for Everyone: Legislation and Regulation (The Great Courses)
The Great Courses / Peter J. Smith | Duration: 6 h 12 m | Video: H264 854x480 | Audio: AAC 44,1 kHz 2ch | 3,82 GB | Language: English | 2019

When many of us think about the law, we think of a judge wielding a gavel with authority. The truth, however, is that in the United States, laws are more likely to be enacted by a legislature or a regulatory agency than simply announced by a court.

The subjects of legislation and regulation are at the heart of how laws are understood and applied every day. A relatively recent addition to more traditional law school topics like torts and contracts, these subjects are becoming more and more of a mainstay in some of the country's top law schools. Given the increasingly prominent role of legislation and regulation in today's national discourse, it's critical for law students and everyday learners alike to understand how these forms of law govern countless aspects of our lives--including everything from workplace safety to the vehicles you drive to the speed of your internet connection.

With Law School for Everyone: Legislation and Regulation, award-winning law professor Peter J. Smith of The George Washington University Law School makes these vital areas of American law accessible to anyone who wants to know how lawmakers and lawyers navigate their many complexities. Over the course of 12 nuanced and balanced lectures, you'll get the opportunity to examine a host of topics, including:

• The nature of regulation;
• The merits of lawmaking by legislation;
• The challenge of interpreting statutes; and
• The role of federal agencies in our legal system.

Along the way, you'll confront intriguing-and controversial-questions about the letter versus the spirit of the law, how much authority independent federal agencies should have, and when a court or the president should step in to impose their own interpretations. Taken together, these lectures are a guide to how we, as citizens, can make sense of the law so we can comply with it-or challenge it when necessary.

Play Ball! The Rise of Baseball as America's Pastime

Play Ball! The Rise of Baseball as America's Pastime
The Great Courses / Bruce Markusen | Duration: 12 h 02 m | Video: H264 640x360 | Audio: AAC 44,1 kHz 2ch | 6,56 GB | Language: English | 2019

Take a time machine back to the days of pre-industrial America and you'll see youths, both in the city and in the countryside, playing informal bat-and-ball games. In many ways, these simple activities looked a bit like our modern game of baseball, but they also differed from the now familiar sport in various and significant ways. When you return to the present and head to a local ballpark, you'll see a very formalized game, one with rigorous rules (both written and unwritten) and also played by adults. And yet the sport captivates our nation's consciousness and reflects our rich and varied culture, long since having earned the title of "America's Pastime."

Every spring, Americans of all ages and backgrounds watch baseball games at their local stadiums or on television. It's a sport that has become a ritual for millions of fans and participants. Its features-from bunts and home runs to stolen bases and diving catches to popular chants and trading cards-are inextricably linked to American culture. Since the 19th century, baseball has held a celebrated and important place at the heart of the American spirit.

Every time you watch baseball, whether it's at a youth league field or a major league stadium, you're watching more than just a game-you're participating in the latest chapter of a compelling story. What began as the earliest bat-and-ball games became the favorite American pastime of the first 19th-century baseball games. Knowing the history of how baseball came to be what it is today will add levels of enjoyment, respect, and appreciation to any game you watch.

The Great Courses has collaborated with the esteemed National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, to offer a baseball course to fans devoted to baseball and to the public, at large, for those who are curious about the story of American baseball. In 24 lectures that paint a portrait of the sport's remarkable past, taking you from the decades before the Civil War to the pivotal year of 1920, Play Ball! The Rise of Baseball as America's Pastime offers a well-rounded, historically rich look at this most distinctive slice of Americana.

Psychology of Human Behavior

Psychology of Human Behavior
The Great Courses / David W. Martin | Duration: 18 h 04 m | Video: H264 640x360 | Audio: AAC 44,1 kHz 2ch | 3,73 GB | Language: English | 2006

What comes to mind when you picture a psychologist? If you're like most people coming to this fascinating field for the first time, the answer may include a leather couch and a scholarly looking gentleman quietly taking notes and occasionally nodding. In some ways, such a picture would be accurate, a confirmation not only of the importance of Sigmund Freud in the history of psychology but also of the degree Freud dominates the popular perception of this discipline.

But the picture would be inaccurate, as well.

Freud was a physician, and the majority of psychologists are not. Both the psychoanalytic theory he pioneered and the therapeutic approach it was based on-psychoanalysis-have seen their dominance wane in recent years. And psychologists today, as indebted as they may be to Freud's landmark explorations of our psychological landscape, are involved in far more than helping people cope with inner demons.

The expansive and varied roles of contemporary psychologists create another common image-of a crowd of white-coated researchers gathered around a maze, carefully recording a white rat's performance. It's another inadequate picture because experimental psychologists today usually work with people, not animals.

Moreover, the areas of interest those psychologists are pursuing now encompass every part of the process we use to develop and function as people:

• How we perceive, remember, and learn
• How we select our friends and partners and retain their affection and love
• The things that motivate us as we make our choices in life
• Even how we relate to the vehicles, machinery, computer systems, or workspaces we encounter as we make our livings.

Rock the JVM! Akka Essentials with Scala

u9a-BYMs-Ni2dm-FH5-MJBc-El-VQXPOP8-CP86.jpg

Rock the JVM! Akka Essentials with Scala
BESTSELLER | Created by Daniel Ciocîrlan | Video: h264, 1280x720 | Audio: AAC 48KHz 2ch | Duration: 12:43 H/M | Lec: 36 | 5.95 GB | Language: English | Sub: English [Auto-generated]

Learn the Akka actor model with Scala and write parallel, concurrent and fault-tolerant systems with Akka supervision

What you'll learn
create concurrent applications with actors instead of threads and locks
design fault-tolerant systems with supervision
configure Akka for various scenarios
confidently test actor systems
use Akka patterns and best practices

Requirements
solid general programming experience
a good understanding of multithreading
a solid command of the Scala language

Description
In this course, we will learn how to write concurrent and resilient applications using Akka actors. You'll write 2000+ lines of Akka code yourself, with guidance, and you will become a rockstar.

This course is for Scala programmers who need to design complex and scalable concurrent applications.

Why Akka:

it speeds up the development of concurrent applications by as much as 10x

its demand has exploded

it's a highly marketable skill

it's incredibly fun - once tasted Akka, you'll never want to get back to threads

I like to get to the point and get things done. This course

deconstructs all concepts into the critical pieces you need

selects the most important ideas and separates them into what's simple but critical and what's powerful

sequences ideas in a way that "clicks" and makes sense throughout the process of learning

applies everything in live code

The end benefits are still much greater:

a completely new mental model around parallel applications

significantly more marketable resume

more enjoyable work - Akka is fun!

This course is for established programmers with experience with Scala and with functional programming at the level of the Rock the JVM Scala beginners course. I already assume a solid understanding of general programming fundamentals.

This course is NOT for you if

you've never written Scala code before

you've never worked with threads

The course is comprehensive, but you'll always see me get straight to the point. So make sure you have a good level of focus and commitment to become a badass programmer.

I believe both theory and practice are important. That's why you'll get lectures with code examples, real life code demos and assignments, plus additional resources, instructions, exercises and solutions. At the end of the course, you'll have written thousands of lines of Akka.

I've seen that my students are most successful - and my best students work at Google-class companies - when they're guided, but not being told what to do. I have exercises waiting for you, where I offer my (opinionated) guidance but otherwise freedom to experiment and improve upon your code.

Definitely not least, my students are most successful when they have fun along the way!

So join me in this course and let's rock the JVM!

Who this course is for?
Scala developers who need to design complex distributed systems
developers looking to get into the field of fast data
