Dying Light ist eine Mischung aus Parkour-Spiel im Stil von Mirror's Edge und Zombie-Survival wie man es aus früheren Techland-Spielen wie den Dead Island-Titeln gewohnt ist. Zur Auswahl stehen vier Charaktere, die unterschiedliche Stärken haben und aus der Ego-Ansicht gesteuert werden. Ein wichtiges Spielelement von Dying Light ist neben der großen Bewegungsfreiheit durch die Parkour-Fähigkeiten auch der Tag-Nacht-Wechsel. Während man tagsüber nach Ressourcen sucht, Waffen baut und dynamische Nebenaufträge erfüllt, muss man nachts mit neuen, aggressiveren und deutlich mehr Gegnern rechnen. Es gibt also einen Überlebenskampf bis zum Sonnenaufgang. Als Grafikmotor dient die Chrome Engine 6, die DirectX-11-Effekte unterstützt.
