Corrosion & Materials Engineering Masterclass
Published 9/2026
Created by ProjectEngPro Engineering and Project Management
MP4 | Video: h264, 1920x1080 | Audio: AAC, 44.1 KHz, 2 Ch
Level: Intermediate | Genre: eLearning | Language: English | Duration: 40 Lectures ( 8h 38m ) | Size: 5.4 GB

Damage mechanisms, corrosion under insulation, sour service, cathodic protection, linings, PMI and material selection
What you'll learn
⚡ Identify a damage mechanism from its appearance, its service conditions and where it occurs
⚡ Select materials for a corrosive service and defend the selection as a documented decision
⚡ Design and assess corrosion under insulation prevention - geometry, coating, cladding and inspection
⚡ Specify materials for sour service to NACE MR0175, including hardness limits and HIC-resistant steel
⚡ Define corrosion circuits and build a corrosion control document that stays true
⚡ Select corrosion monitoring techniques and locations that produce decisions rather than data
⚡ Design and survey cathodic protection for tank bottoms, and judge whether it is working
⚡ Specify internal linings and coatings for the service they actually see
⚡ Apply XRF and OES within their real limits, and design a material verification programme
⚡ Read a microstructure and understand what heat treatment did to it
⚡ Calculate a corrosion rate from real data and know how wrong it can be
⚡ Prepare for the corrosion, coating and cathodic protection topics examined in the AMPP path and the API codes
Requirements
❗ No prior metallurgy or corrosion training is required - both are built from first principles for engineers
❗ Any engineering, inspection or technical background is enough to follow the programme
❗ No laboratory background needed - this is degradation on operating plant, not corrosion science
❗ Comfortable with basic chemistry concepts - the electrochemistry is explained as it arises
❗ No software or purchases needed. Copies of API 571 and NACE MR0175 are useful alongside the course but not required
❗ Suitable both as a complete programme and as a reference to return to module by module
Description
Something is corroding. Three questions decide what happens next. Why is it degrading, how fast, and what stops it.
Most engineers can answer one of those. The inspector can name the mechanism but not the material behaviour underneath it. The materials engineer can specify the alloy but not design the cathodic protection. The corrosion engineer knows the monitoring data but not whether the material in the line is the material on the drawing.
This masterclass covers all three, because on an operating plant they are one problem.
WHY THESE MODULES BELONG TOGETHER
Corrosion under insulation is a design decision, a coating specification and an inspection problem at once. Sour service cracking is a materials selection, a hardness control and a fabrication issue simultaneously. A cathodic protection system that is not surveyed is a document rather than a protection measure.
Studied separately these subjects stay separate, and the engineer who owns one of them cannot close out a degradation problem alone. Studied together, the connections become the point.
WHAT IS INSIDE - SEVEN COMPLETE MODULESMaterials, Metallurgy & Corrosion.Microstructure, grain size and the iron-carbon system; heat treatment and what it actually achieves; the alloy families from carbon steel through stainless and duplex to nickel alloys; corrosion electrochemistry; localised corrosion; environmentally assisted cracking; high-temperature mechanisms; and material selection as a documented decision rather than a preference.
API 571 Damage Mechanisms. The mechanism catalogue every inspection code assumes you already know: thinning mechanisms from sulfidation to corrosion under insulation, environment-assisted cracking including chloride and amine stress corrosion cracking, high-temperature mechanisms including creep and high-temperature hydrogen attack, and the metallurgical and mechanical mechanisms that complete the picture.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Sour Service.H2S partial pressure and the severity thresholds, sulfide stress cracking as hydrogen embrittlement, HIC and the role of inclusions, SOHIC and soft zone cracking, chemistry restrictions and calcium treatment, HIC-resistant steel specification and test acceptance, hardness control in the weld and heat affected zone, and corrosion-resistant alloy environmental limits.
API 583 Corrosion Under Insulation. The mechanism and where it hides, the temperature ranges and geometries that make equipment susceptible, insulation and cladding design that prevents water ingress, coating selection under insulation, the detection problem and the inspection methods that work through cladding, and a programme that prioritises the equipment worth stripping.
Corrosion Management & Control Documents. Corrosion circuits and how to define them, the corrosion control document as the working record of what is expected to degrade and why, monitoring technique selection and location, chemical treatment and inhibition, corrosion rate determination from real data, and the assurance that keeps a programme alive after the consultant leaves.
API 578 Material Verification & PMI. Why material mix-ups happen and what they cost, XRF and its real limits including carbon detection, optical emission spectroscopy, risk-based programme extent, traceability and marking, nonconformance management, and the components most often left out of a verification programme.
Tank Cathodic Protection, Linings & Overfill. Soil-side and product-side corrosion of tank bottoms, cathodic protection design for sacrificial and impressed current systems, survey and acceptance criteria, internal lining selection and application, and overfill prevention and release prevention as the containment layer around all of it.
THE PART NOBODY TEACHES
The corrosion control document. It appears in three modules and it is the thread connecting all of them. A corrosion circuit definition is a materials decision, a monitoring plan and an inspection scope simultaneously. Most plants have the document and cannot say when it was last true. The programme treats it as the working record it is supposed to be.
CERTIFICATION TOPICS COVERED
The programme covers subject matter examined in the AMPP corrosion certification path - including the coating inspector, corrosion technologist and cathodic protection streams - and in API 510, 570 and 653 where damage mechanisms and material verification are named source documents.
THREE FULL MOCK EXAMINATIONS
Timed, scored and retakeable, covering damage mechanisms, corrosion control and protection, and materials and sour service specification. Not video walkthroughs - actual examinations you can sit under conditions.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Corrosion and materials engineers who specify alloys, set corrosion rates and own the control document. Inspection and integrity engineers assessing degradation and setting inspection scope. Coating and cathodic protection specialists moving into a wider corrosion role. Process and project engineers making material selection decisions they will live with for twenty years. And engineers preparing for the AMPP corrosion path or the API inspection codes.
WHAT YOU GET
Around 22 hours of structured video across 140 lessons and 35 sections, two full mock examinations, downloadable presentations, lifetime access on mobile and TV and a certificate of completion.
No prior metallurgy or corrosion training is required - the microstructure and the electrochemistry are both built from first principles for engineers. No laboratory background needed; this is the engineering of degradation on operating plant, not corrosion science.
STILL GROWING
This masterclass is actively extended. New modules are added at no extra cost to everyone already enrolled.
Built by a practising Chartered Engineer (CEng MIMechE) with over fifteen years delivering safety-critical projects across oil, gas and energy infrastructure.
Enrol now and be the engineer who can answer all three questions.
