The Entirely True Story of the Fantastical Mesmerist Nora Grey by Kathleen Kaufman
English | July 29, 2025 | ISBN: 1496753909, 9781496753922 | True EPUB | 448 pages | 1 MB
As spiritualism reaches its fevered pitch at the dawn of the 20th century, a Scottish girl crosses the veil to unlock a powerful connection within an infamous asylum in this thrillingly atmospheric, exquisitely evocative exploration of feminine rage and agency for readers of Sarah Penner, Alice Hoffman, and Hester Fox.

Leaving behind a quiet life of simple comforts, Nairna Liath traverses the Scottish countryside with her charlatan father, Tavish. From remote cottages to rural fairs, the duo scrapes by on paltry coins as Tavish orchestrates "encounters" with the departed, while Nairna interprets tarot cards for those willing to pay for what they wish to hear.
But beyond her father's trickery, Nairna possesses a genuine gift for communicating with the spirit world, one that could get an impoverished country girl branded a witch. A talent inherited from her grandmother, Lottie Liath, widow of a Welsh coalminer, whose story of imprisonment and exploitation in a notorious asylum is calling out to Nairna from four decades past-a warning to break free from the manipulations, greed, and betrayals of others.
What do the cards hold for Nairna's future?
Rescued from homelessness by a well-connected stranger, Nairna is whisked into a new life among Edinburgh's elite Spiritualist circle, including visiting American star Dorothy Kellings. Researchers, doctors, psychics, and thrill-seekers clamor for the rising young medium. But after a séance with blood-chilling results, a shocking scandal ensues, and Nairna flees to a secluded community near Boston, where she assumes a new identity: Nora Grey.
But Nora can't stay hidden when Dorothy Kellings offers her the chance to face all comers and silence skeptics at a spectacular séance at Boston's Old South Meeting Hall, where Nora will come face to face at last with her spiritual guide: the courageous Lottie Liath, whose heart-wrenching story and profound messages are indelibly tied to Nora's destiny.

Robert J. Daly SJ, "The Eucharist in the West: History and Theology"
English | 1998 | ISBN: 0814662048 | EPUB | pages: 451 | 0.5 mb
In the light of its own history, the Catholic theology of the Eucharist, as it is generally understood today, is revealed as a splinter tradition whose deficiencies call for fundamental reformulation. The valid aspects of that theology (for example, the recovery of the role of the Holy Spirit in the new Roman Eucharistic Prayers) must be identified and integrated with the faith and practice of the first theological millennium when the lex orandi was not so dominated by the lex credendi. In the third theological millennium, more attention to the content and structure of the classical Eucharistic Prayers of both East and West will result in a Catholic systematic theology of eucharistic sacrifice that is not only truer to its biblical and patristic foundations but also - of ecumenical import - closer to some of the theological insights of the Protestant Reformers.

These highlights of The Eucharist in the West illustrate the great value of this posthumous work. Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Father Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, SJ
Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology. Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine Eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. Chapter ten offers an account of some recent contributions to the formulation of a theology of the eucharistic sacrifice which have contributed to the modern average Roman Catholic synthesis.
Robert J. Daly, SJ, is a professor of theology at Boston College and former editor of Theological Studies.
Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ (1923-1994), professor for liturgical theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, taught theology first at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and later at Boston College. He served as director of the doctoral program in liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame.

The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity by Sarah Schulman
English | April 22, 2025 | ISBN: 059385425X | 320 pages | PDF | 3.00 Mb
From award-winning writer Sarah Schulman, a longtime social activist and outspoken critic of the Israeli war on Gaza, comes a brilliant examination of the inherent psychological and social challenges to solidarity movements, and what that means for the future

For those who seek to combat injustice, solidarity with the oppressed is one of the highest ideals, yet it does not come without complication. In this searing yet uplifting book, award-winning writer and cultural critic Sarah Schulman delves into the intricate and often misunderstood concept of solidarity to provide a new vision for what it means to engage in this work-and why it matters.
To grapple with solidarity, Schulman writes, we must recognize its inherent fantasies. Those being oppressed dream of relief, that a bystander will intervene though it may not seem to be in their immediate interest to do so, and that the oppressor will be called out and punished. Those standing in solidarity with the oppressed are occluded by a different fantasy: that their intervention is effective, that it will not cost them, and that they will be rewarded with friendship and thanks. Neither is always the case, and yet in order to realize our full potential as human beings in relation with others, we must continue to pursue action towards these shared goals.
Within this framework, Schulman examines a range of case studies, from the fight for abortion rights in post-Franco Spain, to NYC's AIDS activism in the 1990s, to the current wave of campus protest movements against Israel's war on Gaza, and her own experience growing up as a queer female artist in male dominated culture industries. Drawing parallels between queer, Palestinian, feminist, and artistic struggles for justice, Schulman challenges the traditional notion of solidarity as a simple union of equals, arguing that in today's world of globalized power structures, true solidarity requires the collaboration of bystanders and conflicted perpetrators with the excluded and oppressed. That action comes at a cost, and is not always effective. And yet without it we sentence ourselves to a world without progressive change towards visions of liberation.
By turns challenging, inspiring, pragmatic, and poetic, The Fantasy and Necessity of Solidarity provides a much-needed path for how we can work together to create a more just, more equitable present and future.

The Fate of the Generals: MacArthur, Wainwright, and the Epic Battle for the Philippines by Jonathan Horn
English | April 15, 2025 | ISBN: 1668010070 | 448 pages | MOBI | 36 Mb
"One of the very best World War II books in many years...A great read." -General David Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), former Director of the CIA * "Fans of Unbroken will love this book." -Doug Stanton

In the tradition of Ghost Soldiers, a "riveting" (The Wall Street Journal) World War II story of bravery, survival, and sacrifice-the vow Douglas MacArthur made to return to the Philippines and the oath his fellow general Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright made to stay with his men there whatever the cost.
For the doomed stand American forces made in the Philippines at the start of World War II, two generals received their country's highest military award, the Medal of Honor. One was the charismatic and controversial Douglas MacArthur, whose orders forced him to leave his soldiers on the islands to starvation and surrender but whose vow to return echoed around the globe. The other was the gritty Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright, who became a hero to the troops whose fate he insisted on sharing, even when it meant becoming the highest-ranking American prisoner of the Japanese.
In The Fate of the Generals, bestselling author Jonathan Horn brings together the story of two men who received the same medal but found honor on very different paths. MacArthur's journey would require a daring escape with his wife and young child to Australia and then years of fighting over thousands of miles to make it back to the Philippines, where he would fulfill his famous vow only to see the city he called home burn. Wainwright's journey would take him from the Philippines to Taiwan and Manchuria as his captors tortured him in prisons and left him to wonder whether his countrymen would ever understand the choice he had made to surrender for the sake of his men.
A story of war made personal based on meticulous research into diaries and letters including boxes of previously unexplored papers, The Fate of the Generals is a vivid account that raises timely questions about how we define honor and how we choose our heroes, and is destined to become a classic of World War II history.

Peter Paddon, "The Flaming Circle: A Reconstruction of the Old Ways of Britain and Ireland"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0979616840 | PDF | pages: 234 | 1.3 mb
"A Regeneration of the Pre-Christian Spiritual Worldviews and Religious Practices of the Holy Isles."

This book is very different from anything Robin Artisson has written so far, for a very special reason: it is written in the tone of a father to his children. This book is a gift for his children, full of things he would want them to know and things he would want to tell them, to help them through their lives. The book is closer, more intimate, and warmer than most of his work.
But it includes massive amounts of material regarding native British Isles (Britain and Ireland) traditional Paganism and spiritual ecology, and native Gods and Goddesses. Tons of scholarly backing and personal inspiration, as well as a wide and complete selection of traditional Pagan philosophical "points of guidance" are offered, as a father would want to offer his most beloved offspring. A full working reconstruction of the pre-Christian polytheistic religious perspectives and practices of Pagan Britain and Ireland is "taught" in its pages, like a guidebook and a long letter/narrative being sent from father to children.
There is a long occult tradition of such exchanges. All are invited to listen in on a man telling the most important things he can tell his children, and hoping that they remember these things when he is gone and they have children of their own. A very personal project, but one he has wanted to create and write for years, and it deals with years worth of material he has collected.

The Food of Sicily: Recipes from a Sun-Drenched Culinary Crossroads by Fabrizia Lanza, Guy Ambrosino
English | September 12, 2023 | ISBN: 1579659861 | 320 pages | EPUB | 133 Mb
In this all-new cookbook from Fabrizia Lanza, one of the world's greatest food cultures is distilled in 75 recipes for the home cook, plus a loving tribute to its ingredients, passions, influences, and history

Tucked away on an estate in the countryside south of Palermo is the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School, a unique center dedicated to preserving and sharing the great food culture of Sicily. The spirit of the school, now run by Fabrizia Lanza, the founder's daughter and scion of a renowned family of winemakers that goes back generations, is what makes Lanza's The Food of Sicily such a singular cookbook-not just a collection of recipes and techniques, but a vibrant and beautifully photographed profile of the land, the people, the history, and so much more.
On every page, in every recipe and note, the author captures the distinct taste of Sicily. How the simplest antipasti, brightly seasoned with nothing but lemon or vinegar, open the appetite-like a classic Octopus Salad or dish of Sautéed Black Olives. The little fried somethings-like an arancine or panelle-are easy, welcome, and nourishing. The Fresh Cavatelli, Pasta with Eggplant and Tomatoes, Bucatini with Sardines and Wild Fennel, and the eye-opening Anelletti Timballo explain why Sicilians are the biggest pasta eaters in the world. Festive meat dishes-such as Lamb-Stuffed Pastry, an Easter staple, or Grilled Sausage with Bay Leaves and Onions-are festive because the moment it's holiday time, Sicilians everywhere head outside and fire up their grills. And for a people known for their passion for sweets, some famous Sicilian treats-Watermelon Pudding, Lemon Granita, Rolled Fig Cookies, and the pinnacle of desserts, the elaborate Sicilian Cake with Ricotta Cream and Marzipan. Along the way, the author delves into everything from cheese, couscous, and olives to Amaro and the importance of bitterness.
Visitors to Sicily often sense it to be a place unlike anywhere else-lost in time and a little bit secretive. The Food of Sicily opens a bright window on it, celebrating this wonderful food culture while honoring everything that makes it special.

The FTC Rule On Consumer Reviews Explained (Law Decoded: Making Sense of Legal Texts for Business, Tech & Beyond) by Alex Bugeja
English | October 22, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DG516B4K | 253 pages | EPUB | 0.71 Mb
In today's digital world, consumer reviews have become an indispensable part of our buying journey. Whether we're choosing a restaurant, booking a hotel, or purchasing a new gadget, we turn to online reviews to gain insights from others' experiences. These reviews provide valuable information, helping us make informed decisions and avoid potential pitfalls.

However, the increasing reliance on consumer reviews has also attracted those seeking to exploit the system for their own gain. Businesses, eager to boost their reputations or sabotage their competitors, have resorted to unethical practices like posting fake reviews, suppressing negative feedback, and incentivizing positive testimonials. This manipulation undermines the very purpose of consumer reviews, eroding trust and leaving consumers vulnerable to deception.
Recognizing the growing threat to consumers and fair competition, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken a significant step to address this issue. On October 22, 2024, the FTC published a new rule specifically targeting unfair or deceptive practices related to consumer reviews and testimonials. This rule aims to restore integrity to the online review ecosystem by setting clear boundaries and providing businesses with unambiguous guidelines.
This book serves as your guide to understanding the FTC's new rule on consumer reviews. We'll break down the rule's provisions in plain language, demystifying legal jargon and offering practical insights for businesses and consumers alike.
We'll explore the FTC's role in protecting consumers, delve into the problem of fake and manipulated reviews, and examine the specific practices now prohibited under the rule. We'll define key terms like "business," "consumer," "review," and "testimonial," ensuring clarity and a shared understanding of the rule's scope.
Each chapter will focus on a particular aspect of the rule, providing detailed analysis and real-world examples. We'll examine issues such as liability for fake reviews, the "knew or should have known" standard, and the nuances of what constitutes a "purchase" of a review. We'll also explore the complexities of insider reviews, company-controlled review websites, and the limits of review suppression.
By the end of this book, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of the FTC's new rule on consumer reviews and its implications for both businesses and consumers. You'll be equipped with the knowledge to navigate the evolving landscape of online reviews, ensuring transparency, trust, and fairness in the digital marketplace.
