A Fearless Eye: The Photography of Barbara Ramos: San Francisco and California, 1969-1973 by Barbara Ramos, Sally Stein, Steven A. Heller
English | February 11, 2025 | ISBN: 1797230026 | 96 pages | MOBI | 37 Mb
A captivating volume that transports us onto the San Francisco streets of the 1970s through the black-and-white images of a previously unknown master of 20th-century photography, Barbara Ramos.

"Published for the first time in A Fearless Eye, Ramos's work captures minute and mesmerizing everyday scenes in a city that was about to change drastically." -The New York Times Book Review
"Ramos's decision to release A Fearless Eye now, after a 50-year hiatus from photography, is certainly a gift to California and beyond. But it's especially a gift to those of us who love San Francisco: its streets, its people, its history. Ramos has frozen each of those in time and given us a gorgeous permanent record of this city's past." -KQED
Unearthed fifty years after they were originally taken, Ramos's photographs offer up stirringscenes from everyday life-a group of Hari Krishnas sing on Market Street, a window dresser changes a mannequin at the Union Square Macy's, two men lean in for a kiss at a peace rally in Golden Gate Park.A Fearless Eyebrings Ramos's images to print for the very first time, introducing audiences to a photographer whose work belongs alongside that of Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, and Vivian Maier.
Featuring a preface byaward-winning novelist and essayist Rachel Kushner, an essay by photography historian Sally Stein, and an interview with Ramos by photographer and writer Stephen A. Heller, this enthralling street photography book is a fascinating time capsule of a bygone moment in California history.
FILM PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK: In his profile of Barbara Ramos inBlack & White magazine, Stephen A. Heller calls her photographs "startling in their humanity, objectivity, and originality," observing that they "deserve to share center stage with those of Frank, Maier, Arbus, and Friedlander." A Fearless Eyeprovides an exciting introduction to this previously unsung talent through a curated selection of Ramos's incredible archival images.
REDISCOVERED FEMALE ARTIST: Throughout the early 1970s, Barbara Ramos became obsessed with exploring the world through her camera, but she was forced to switch careers to make a living at the time. The rediscovery of her photographs is now leading to overdue public recognition of her work, including a prominent Black & White magazine profile and an exhibit at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica.
SAN FRANCISCO HISTORY GEM: This volume celebrates the people and history of San Francisco. It'sa charming tribute to the city with a uniquely vintage visual flavor, a must-have for longtime residents and visitors alike.
Perfect for:Lovers of vintage, historical, and street photographySan Francisco residents, visitors, and armchair historiansMuseum-goers and fans of such renowned American photographers as Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, and Robert FrankFans of Barbara Ramos's unconventional story and unparalleled work

A Fury in the Words : Love and Embarrassment in Shakespeare's Venice By Harry Berger, Jr.
2012 | 239 Pages | ISBN: 0823241947 | PDF | 1 MB
ShakespeareGs two Venetian plays are dominated by the discourse of embarrassment. The Merchant of Venice is a comedy of embarrassment, and Othello is a tragedy of embarrassment. This nomenclature is admittedly anachronistic, because the term GembarrassmentG didnGt enter the language until the late seventeenth century. To embarrass is to make someone feel awkward or uncomfortable, humiliated or ashamed. Such feelings may respond to specific acts of criticism, blame, or accusation. GTo embarrassG is literally to GembarG: to put up a barrier or deny access. The bar of embarrassment may be raised by unpleasant experiences. It may also be raised when people are denied access to things, persons, and states of being they desire or to which they feel entitled. The Venetian plays represent embarrassment not merely as a condition but as a weapon and as the wound the weapon inflicts. Characters in The Merchant of Venice and Othello devote their energies to embarrassing one another. But even when the weapon is sheathed, it makes its presence felt, as when Desdemona means to praise Othello and express her love for him: GI saw OthelloGs visage in his mindG (1.3.253). This suggests, among other things, that she didnGt see it in his face.

Robert Layton, "A Future for Archaeology "
English | ISBN: 1598743376 | 2007 | 270 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Over the last thirty years issues of culture, identity and meaning have moved out of the academic sphere to become central to politics and society at all levels from the local to the global. Archaeology has been at the forefront of these moves towards a greater engagement with the non-academic world, often in an extremely practical and direct way, for example in the disputes about the repatriation of human burials. Such disputes have been central to the recognition that previously marginalized groups have rights in their own past that are important for their future. The essays in this book look back at some of the most important events where a role for an archaeology concerned with the past in the present first emerged and look forward to the practical and theoretical issues now central to a socially engaged discipline and shaping its future. This book is published in honor of Professor Peter Ucko, who has played an unparalleled role in promoting awareness of the core issues in this volume among archaeologists.

A Geology of School Reform : The Successive Restructurings of a School District By Liane Brouillette
1996 | 165 Pages | ISBN: 0791429903 | PDF | 1 MB
Provides a rare look at how successive waves of educational reforms have interacted within a single school district.A Geology of School Reform provides a rare look at how successive waves of reform have interacted within a single school district. Among the questions raised are: Which practices proved destructive to the learning of students and the morale of teachers? What innovations have practitioners kept despite changes in educational fashion? The Cottonwood School District, which began as two rural schoolhouses in the early 1950s, is followed through the experiments of the 1960s; the back-to-basics movements of the 1970s; and the innovations of the 1980s. The successive waves of reform had different meanings for various professional and community groups within this culturally diverse district. Educators, enmeshed in the priorities of previous reforms, often resisted subsequent changes. Although the differences that arose between them and their communities sometimes required facilitators to assist communication, collaborative decision making has helped Cottonwood to deal with these changes.Liane Brouillette is Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies at the University of Houston.

Steven E Knepper, "A Heart of Flesh: William Desmond and the Bible "
English | ISBN: 1666799181 | 2023 | 248 pages | EPUB | 1126 KB
The Irish philosopher William Desmond is one of the most compelling and adventurous Christian thinkers of our time. The essays gathered here undertake a journey through the Bible with Desmond that ranges across biblical theology, philosophy of religion, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, political theory, and literary studies. Some of the essays examine the place of the Bible in Desmond's thought, considering his readings of the creation, the Abraham cycle, and the Beatitudes. Other essays bring Desmond's ideas to bear on broad questions that emerge from the Bible about philosophy and revelation, exegesis, theopoetics, eschatology, and tyranny. Still others bring Desmond into conversation with influential philosophers who engage (or conspicuously do not engage) the Bible, such as Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Tillich. Together, these essays show the rich possibilities of approaching the Bible with Desmond. All take their bearings from Desmond's "metaxological" approach, which does not seek to claim the final word, which attends to the text rather than simply imposing on it, and which allows for an ongoing dialogue. / Contributors: Ryan G.
