Simone Weil, "Selected Essays, 1934-1943: Historical, Political, and Moral Writings "
English | ISBN: 1498239218 | 2015 | 240 pages | PDF | 129 MB
Introducing the Selected Works of Simone Weil Weil's many essays written over her short life cover a very wide range of topics. This important collection contains several that have been long unavailable. There is deep integrity in this diverse collection. Many are directed to social and political topics, written in Weil's distinctive way of commenting on contemporary issues through historical writing. Weil wrote in her great work The Need for Roots that humans beings need roots in the universe; this rootedness comes through their lived history. Often Weil is treated as if she were constantly trying to posit timeless truths, but as these essays make evident, Weil offers to her readers a sense of truth as we discover it and live with it in our concrete historical circumstances. This analogical and historical thinking is particularly clear in the several essays that come from her last days while working for the Free French in London, during which she meditated on the philosophical renewal of France after the war. Selected Letters of Martha Gellhorn by Martha Gellhorn, edited by Caroline Moorehead
English | July 25, 2006 | ISBN: 0805065555, 0805083227 | True EPUB | 544 pages | 1.9 MB
"A literary landmark. Gellhorn's prose . . . is at its finest in the letter form."―Francine du Plessix Gray, The New York Times Book Review

From Martha Gellhorn's critically acclaimed biographer, the first collected letters of this defining figure of the twentieth-century
Martha Gellhorn's heroic career as a reporter brought her to the front lines of virtually every significant international conflict between the Spanish Civil War and the end of the Cold War. While Gellhorn's wartime dispatches rank among the best of the century, her personal letters are their equal: as vivid and fascinating as anything she ever published.
Gellhorn's correspondence from 1930 to 1996-chronicling friendships with figures as diverse as Eleanor Roosevelt, Leonard Bernstein, and H. G. Wells, as well as her tempestuous marriage to Ernest Hemingway-paint a vivid picture of the twentieth century as she lived it.
Caroline Moorehead, who was granted exclusive access to the letters, has expertly edited this fascinating volume, providing prefatory and interstitial material that contextualizes Gellhorn's correspondence within the arc of her entire life. The letters introduce us to the woman behind the correspondent-a writer of wit, charm, and vulnerability. The result is an exhilarating, intimate portrait of one of the most accomplished women of modern times.

In Part One, get to know your self. From the ground up, discover what the self truly is, how it links to identity, and how self-obsession is central to the human condition and the psychological pain that each of us experience. In Part Two, overcome self-obsession. Free yourself from your psychological prison, and learn how to live the peaceful and joyful life that you deserve.
With a fresh and lucid style, Dr Tom Davies combines his knowledge of the medical, psychological and the philosophical to bring you real solutions to life's most challenging problems. Selling Social Justice: Why the Rich Love Antiracism (Jacobin), aka Selling Social Justice: Why the Ruling Class Loves Antiracism by Jennifer C. Pan
English | May 6, 2025 | ISBN: 1804294225, 9781804294239 | True EPUB | 208 pages | 0.4 MB
Americans have been sold a version of social justice that fails to deliver

The national racial reckoning that began in 2020 promised to radically restructure American society from the bottom up. But five years on, it has mainly served to strengthen the ruling class and deliver the rich an opportunity to rehabilitate a profoundly unequal economic order precisely at a moment when the stability of the system and the public's trust in it are drastically deteriorating.
Corporations have used antiracism to consolidate their political power and evade government regulation. Employers have surveilled and undermined workers through counterproductive diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings. Affluent professionals and Democratic politicians have exacerbated a stark class divide by pushing half-baked "racial equity" policies that come at the expense of the majority of working people. And the right has reacted to these developments by stoking a toxic culture war against "wokeness" that serves only as a distraction from the increasing economic hardship faced by Americans of all races.
Selling Social Justice investigates the rise and spread of contemporary antiracist ideology and shows how the rich came to embrace this particular form of justice. In this provocative and thoroughly researched account, Jennifer C. Pan explores why, in a twenty-first-century economy of increasing scarcity, antiracism is the wrong frame for understanding and fighting inequality.

Selling Yoga: From Counterculture to Pop Culture by Andrea Jain
English | December 8, 2014 | ISBN: 0199390231, 019939024X | True EPUB | 264 pages | 1.8 MB
Premodern and early modern yoga comprise techniques with a wide range of aims, from turning inward in quest of the true self, to turning outward for divine union, to channeling bodily energy in pursuit of sexual pleasure. Early modern yoga also encompassed countercultural beliefs and practices. In contrast, today, modern yoga aims at the enhancement of the mind-body complex but does so according to contemporary dominant metaphysical, health, and fitness paradigms. Consequently, yoga is now a part of popular culture.

In Selling Yoga, Andrea R. Jain explores the popularization of yoga in the context of late-twentieth-century consumer culture. She departs from conventional approaches by undermining essentialist definitions of yoga as well as assumptions that yoga underwent a linear trajectory of increasing popularization. While some studies trivialize popularized yoga systems by reducing them to the mere commodification or corruption of what is perceived as an otherwise fixed, authentic system, Jain suggests that this dichotomy oversimplifies the history of yoga as well as its meanings for contemporary practitioners.
By discussing a wide array of modern yoga types, from Iyengar Yoga to Bikram Yoga, Jain argues that popularized yoga cannot be dismissed-that it has a variety of religious meanings and functions. Yoga brands destabilize the basic utility of yoga commodities and assign to them new meanings that represent the fulfillment of self-developmental needs often deemed sacred in contemporary consumer culture.

English | March 14, 2025 | ISBN: 1915829291, 9781915829306 | True EPUB | 403 pages | 0.5 MB
When his father is accused of rebellion and forced to commit seppuku, it falls to Maki Bunshirô to protect his family's house from future retribution. As he is navigating clan politics, the object of this youthful affection, Fuku, becomes the mistress of the lord of the domain. When Fuku and her child become the key to the future of the domain, Bunshirô is forced to choose between what his lord commands and his childhood love.

Semishigure, literally meaning "cicada showers," refers to the everpresent noise of insects chirping in Japanese summers, a nostalgic reminder of the passing seasons. This much-loved, sentimental samurai novel by Fujisawa Shuhei, the undisputed master of the genre, is finally available in English, and Thomas Harper's deft translation brings all of the power, longing, and joy of the original that has captivated generations of Japanese readers.

Sex Is a Spectrum: The Biological Limits of the Binary by Agustín Fuentes
English | May 6, 2025 | ISBN: 0691249415 | True EPUB | 216 pages | 0.6 MB
Why human biology is far more expansive than the simple categories of female and male

Being human entails an astonishingly complex interplay of biology and culture, and while there are important differences between women and men, there is a lot more variation and overlap than we may realize. Sex Is a Spectrum offers a bold new paradigm for understanding the biology of sex, drawing on the latest science to explain why the binary view of the sexes is fundamentally flawed-and why having XX or XY chromosomes isn't as conclusive as some would have us believe.
In this lively and provocative book, leading biological anthropologist Agustín Fuentes begins by tracing the origin and evolution of sex, describing the many ways in the animal kingdom of being female, male, or both. Turning to humans, he presents compelling evidence from the fossil and archaeological record that attests to the diversity of our ancestors' sexual bonds, gender roles, and family and community structures, and shows how the same holds true in the lived experiences of people today. Fuentes tackles hot-button debates around sports and medicine, explaining why we can acknowledge that females and males are not the same while also embracing a biocultural reality where none of us fits neatly into only one of two categories.
Bringing clarity and reason to a contentious issue, Sex Is a Spectrum shares a scientist's perspective on why a binary view of sex and gender is not only misguided but harmful, and why there are multitudes of ways of being human.

Francesca Biancani, "Sex Work in Colonial Egypt: Women, Modernity and the Global Economy "
English | ISBN: 1788311035 | 2018 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In the early 20th century Cairo was a vibrant and booming global metropolis. The integration of Egypt into the global market had led to rapid urban growth and increased migration. As occupational prospects for women outside the family were limited, sex work became a prominent feature of the new modern city. However, the economic and social changes in Egypt ignited national anxieties about racial degeneration, social disorder and imperial decadence. Francesca Biancani argues here that this was a period of national crisis that became inscribed on the bodies on female sex workers.

Based on a wide range of rare primary sources, including documents from court cases, reformist papers, police minutes and letters, Biancani examines the discourses around sex workers and shows how prostitution was understood in colonial Egypt. The book argues that from initially regulating and managing prostitution, local and colonial elites began to depict sex workers as a threat to the physical and moral welfare of the rising Egyptian nation. However, far from being a marginal activity, prostitution is shown to play a central role in the history of Egyptian nation-making. By exploring the interdependence of power and marginality, respectability and transgression, Biancani writes sex work and its practitioners back into the history of modern Egypt. The book is an original contribution to the global history of prostitution and a vital resource for scholars of Middle East Studies.
