Muna Abu Eid, "Mahmoud Darwish: Literature and the Politics of Palestinian Identity "
English | ISBN: 1784530719 | 2016 | 248 pages | PDF | 77 MB
Mahmoud Darwish is the poet laureate of the Palestinian national struggle. His poems resonate across the entire Arab world and, more than any other single figure perhaps since the death of Yasser Arafat, he represents a unifying figurehead for Palestinian national aspirations. In this, the first comprehensive biography of Darwish in English, Muna Abu Eid examines the poet's intellectual status on two fronts - both national and public - and offers a critical assessment of Darwish's national and political life. Based on Darwish's own writings and interviews with people who worked with him and situating Darwish's poetry within the wider context of Palestinian struggles inside Israel, this book explores the influence of Darwish's life and work in the Palestinian territories and in the diaspora: from the destruction of his Galilee village and displacement of his family during the 1948 Nakba; to his return and 'infiltration' back into the homeland and the struggle for survival inside Israel; to his internal and external exiles in Haifa, Moscow, Cairo, Beirut, Tunisia, Paris and even Ramallah.

Make Me Famous: A Novel by Maud Ventura, translated by Gretchen Schmid
English | May 13, 2025 | ISBN: 0063427516, 9780063427532 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 1.7 MB
Daisy Jones and the Six meets Patricia Highsmith in this addictive, intense novel about the brutal and ferocious road to glory, from the award-winning author of My Husband.

Ever since she was a child, Cléo, the French-American daughter of two academics, has had only one obsession: becoming a famous singer. Over the years, to everyone's surprise but her own, she overcomes every obstacle and becomes a global superstar with millions of dollars, countless awards, and several Los Angeles villas to her name. But as any celebrity will tell you, getting to the top is one thing; staying there is another.
Now thirty-three years old, Cléo is taking her first real vacation in years, on a remote island with no one else in sight. With the never-ending spin cycle of her life finally on pause and no paparazzi peeking out from behind the coconut palms, she can work on her fourth album in peace. Except that with so much time to think, she can't help but ruminate on her past-including how, just six months earlier, things started to go very, very wrong . . .
Taking place between New York, Paris, Los Angeles, and the South Pacific, Make Me Famous is a brilliant sophomore novel from Maud Ventura that dives intoxicatingly deep into the machinations of one woman's complicated mind, and her relentless pursuit of fame.

Peter Ryley, "Making Another World Possible: Anarchism, Anti-capitalism and Ecology in Late 19th and Early 20th Century Britain "
English | ISBN: 144115440X | 2013 | 224 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Making Another World Possible identifies the British contribution to the genealogy of modern green and anti-capitalist thinking by examining left libertarian ideologies in the late 19th and early 20th century Britain and highlighting their influence on present day radical thought.

As capitalism heralded the triumph of technology, greater production, and a new urban industrial society, some imagined alternatives to this notion of progress based on endless economic growth. The book examines the development of ideas from these dissidents who included communists, class warriors, free thinkers, secularists, and Christian communitarians. All shared the same beliefs that the benefits of industrialism could only be realized through equality and that urban culture depended on a healthy agriculture and harmony with the natural world - concerns that are still of great importance today.
This distinctive history of anarchist ideas reappraises the work of thinkers and revises the historical picture of the radical milieu in 19th and 20th century Britain. It will be an essential resource to anyone researching the history of ideas and studying anarchism.

Making Progress: How Good Policy Happens by Jenny Macklin, Joel Deane
English | 16 April 2025 | ISBN: 0522866875 | True EPUB | 312 pages | 0.5 MB
Is big policy reform still possible? Does Australia have the political will to tackle generational issues such as climate change, the housing crisis, rising inequality and Closing the Gap?

Legendary Labor policymaker Jenny Macklin believes that if Australia wants to remain prosperous and fair, big policy reform is not just possible, it's essential.
Making Progress takes us into the policy engine room and details how Macklin went about developing transformational initiatives such as the Apology to the Stolen Generations, paid parental leave and the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as well as delivering pension reforms that lifted one million Australians out of poverty. She explains how she became a policy wonk, and interviews key policymakers such as Julia Gillard, Brian Howe, Bill Kelty, Tanya Plibersek and Ross Garnaut, who share how they war-gamed ways to turn good policy ideas into reality.
Part policy memoir, part war-room drama, part field guide, Making Progress: How Good Policy Happens is a political book with a message-and a method.

Ali Sonay, "Making Revolution in Egypt: The 6 April Youth Movement in a Global Context "
English | ISBN: 1784538663 | 2017 | 256 pages | PDF | 14 MB
The April 6th Youth Movement began as a Facebook page that sought to mobilize young Egyptians' support for striking industrial workers. Established in Egypt in 2008 when over 100,000 Facebook users joined, the movement consisted mainly of young Egyptians who had never been involved in politics before. The group's unprecedented popularity meant that it eventually coalesced into a political movement and played a key role in the revolution against Hosni Mubarak's rule. This book investigates the rise and fall of the April 6th Movement to explain the contentious dynamics of social activism in Egypt. Despite the Movement's initial success, it was banned by an Egyptian court and its main founders arrested after it later turned against the military-installed regime. The formal transition process following Mubarak's fall had posed ideological and organizational challenges to the Movement, leading to internal fragmentations and the gradual loss of its mobilizing capacity.

But Ali Sonay argues here that social movements around the world faced very similar opportunities and constraints, and that the political and socio-economic dynamics in Egypt cannot be understood by referring to concepts such as the 'West' and 'Middle East'. Instead, according to Sonay, the Arab uprisings were embedded in the increasingly volatile global political and socio-economic context that reached way beyond the Middle East and was exacerbated by the financial crisis in 2008. Based on first-hand and in-depth empirical findings, Sonay sheds new light on the so-called Arab Spring and presents the April 6th Movement as a manifestation of a global political discourse.

Malcom is Missing: A True Story of Murder and a Daughter's Quest for Justice in Mexico by Robert Osborne
English | April 8, 2025 | ISBN: 1771607378, 9781771607384 | True EPUB | 248 pages | 13.6 MB
Based on the award-winning CBC documentary, Malcom is Missing tells the story of a single mother of two from small-town Canada who looks for her missing father in Mexico and ends up taking on one of the most corrupt justice systems in the world.

In October 2018, Brooke Mullins hastily packed a small bag and boarded a flight to Mexico. But it wasn't for leisure. Five days prior, she received harrowing news: her father, Canadian artist Malcom Madsen, had vanished. Driven by an instinct that all was not well, Brooke embarked on a quest to find him.
Within days, her worst fears were confirmed: it seemed Malcom had met a tragic end. Armed with a damning video capturing his drugging, GPS data tracing his car to a remote jungle spot on the night of his disappearance, and a series of relatively misleading statements from his Mexican girlfriend, Brooke turned to Mexican authorities, hoping for closure.
Yet, even after numerous gruelling years and over $300,000 spent, closure eludes her grasp. Despite the emotional and legal hurdles, Brooke persists, propelled by twin objectives: to recover her father's remains and to ensure justice for his perpetrators. Many might deem challenging Mexico's notoriously corrupt legal system a fool's errand, especially for a 42-year-old single mother from Port Hope, Ontario. But Brooke Mullins dismissed such doubts, steadfast in her resolve to fight on.

Nasser O. Rabbat, "Mamluk History through Architecture: Monuments, Culture and Politics in Medieval Egypt and Syria "
English | ISBN: 1845119649 | 2010 | 288 pages | PDF | 15 MB
The most enduring testament to the Mamluk Sultanate is its architecture. Not only do Mamluk buildings embody one of the most outstanding medieval architectural traditions, Mamluk architecture is actually a key to the social history of the period. Analysing Mamluk constructions as a form of communication and documentation as well as a cultural index, "Mamluk History Through Architecture" shows how the buildings mirror the complex - and historically unique - military, political, social and financial structures of Mamluk society. With this original and authoritative study, Nasser Rabbat offers an innovative approach to the history of the Mamluks - through readings of the spectacular architecture of the period. Drawing on examples from throughout both Egypt and Syria, from the Citadel and Al-Azhar Mosque of Cairo to the Mausoleum of al-Zahir Baybars in Damascus, Rabbat demonstrates how Mamluk architecture served to reinforce visually the spirit of the counter-Crusade, when the Muslim world rebounded from the setbacks of the First Crusade. Both holistically and in case studies, Rabbat demonstrates how history is inscribed into and reflected by a culture's artefacts.

This is a groundbreaking work in the study of architecture and social history in the Middle East and beyond.

Man of Taste: The Erotic Cinema of Radley Metzger (Film and Culture Series) by Rob King
English | March 25, 2025 | ISBN: 0231214049, 0231214057 | True EPUB | 264 pages | 127 MB
Radley Metzger was one of the foremost directors of adult film in America, with credits including softcore titles like The Lickerish Quartet and the hardcore classic The Opening of Misty Beethoven. After getting his start making arthouse trailers for Janus Films, Metzger would go on to become among the most feted directors of the "porno chic" era of the 1970s, working under the pseudonym Henry Paris. In the process, he produced a body of work that exposed the porous boundaries separating art cinema from adult film, softcore from hardcore, and good taste from bad.

Rob King uses Metzger's work to explore what taste means and how it works, tracing the evolution of the adult film industry and the changing frontiers of cultural acceptability. Man of Taste spans Metzger's entire life: his early years in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood, his attempt to bring arthouse aesthetics to adult film in the 1960s, his turn to pseudonymously directed hardcore movies in the 1970s, and his final years, which included making videos on homeopathic medicine. Metzger's career, King argues, sheds light on how the distinction between the erotic and the pornographic is drawn, and it offers an uncanny reflection of the ways American film culture transformed during these decades.
Lavishly illustrated with rare photos and publicity images, this book paints a vivid picture of a filmmaker who channeled his artistic aspirations into some of the most disreputable movie genres of his day.

Mantle of Mercy: Islamic Chaplaincy in North America (Spirituality and Mental Health) edited by Muhammad A. Ali, Omer Bajwa, Sondos Kholaki, Jaye Starr
English | February 28, 2022 | ISBN: 1599475936, 9781599475943 | True EPUB | 320 pages | 2.7 MB
This engaging collection presents thirty essays by Muslim chaplains reflecting on their experiences as spiritual caregivers. Through their first-hand accounts, they impart how they skillfully apply the mercy and compassion of the Prophet Muhammad to the people in their care. They also share how their faith informs their service, how they navigate the obstacles of a predominantly Christian profession, and how they administer to the spiritual needs of people of different faiths or of no faith at all.

Working in a variety of settings-including hospitals, prisons, universities, and the armed forces-Muslim chaplains encounter unique challenges on a daily basis, requiring them to call upon the resources of their Islamic faith with wisdom and tenderness. The contributors to this volume explore these circumstances vividly and honestly. Their personal stories are instructive of how Islamic principles can be employed with spiritual insight to bring strength and comfort to the sick and suffering.

Manual Not Included by Hilaria Baldwin
English | May 6, 2025 | ISBN: 1668009986 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 109 MB
In thoughtful, candid, and often funny vignettes, Hilaria Baldwin-mother, wellness expert, and star of TLC's The Baldwins-reveals the highs and lows and unpredictable outtakes from her different and not-so-different life.

There's no set of instructions when it comes to navigating the challenges life throws at us. However, by sharing our narratives and finding our commonality, we can better deal with what comes our way.
After meeting her husband, actor Alec Baldwin, Hilaria found joy and purpose entering the public eye, where she sought to build community and connection with others. She also faced the challenges of the uglier, more toxic parts of the spotlight, living under a warped magnifying glass. Through the ups and downs, Hilaria leaned into wisdom and support offered by others, learning that optimism, kindness, and a sense of humor can put life into perspective. And additionally learning that we are not alone, that we are more alike than we are different.
In Manual Not Included, Hilaria writes about the relatable, hard-earned insights she's gained from her experiences as an individual, a partner, and a parent-from feeling empowered, to having a fulfilling relationship, to being as good a mother as possible, all while still being a work in progress.
Within chapters about love, motherhood, and friendship, Hilaria offers up her candid stories around common themes facing women-from feeling like you're too much and also not enough, to grappling with the expectation to be a "good girl," and to striving for unattainable perfection. While there is no one right way to live, by sharing what we've learned along the way, with compassion and without judgment, we can each create our own perfectly imperfect manual.
