Return Flights By Jarita Davis
2016 | 90 Pages | ISBN: 1933227672 | PDF | 1 MB
These poems-varying from narrative to imagist to lyrical-reflect the "sodade" of Cape Verdean culture that is shaped by separation and longing-longing for the home that has been left behind and for loved ones who have departed. Cape Verdean communities extend beyond national boundaries and are paradoxically independent of place, even when inspired by it. Return Flights marks a turning point for Cape Verdean American culture, one in which a partially forgotten past becomes a starting point for possible futures, both of new transoceanic contacts and of new reinventions of culture.

Revenge Versus Legality : Wild Justice from Balzac to Clint Eastwood and Abu Ghraib By Katherine Maynard; Jarod Kearney; James Guimond
2010 | 229 Pages | ISBN: 0415560160 | EPUB | 1 MB
In the wake of Guantanamo Bay, extraordinary renditions, and secret torture centres in Eastern Europe and elsewhere, Revenge versus Legality addresses the relationship between law and wild or vigilante justice; between the power to enforce retribution and the desire to seek revenge. Taking up a variety of narratives from the eras of Romanticism, Realism, Modernism and the Contemporary period, and including new theories to explain the interactions that occur between legalistic courtroom justice and the vigilante variety, Revenge versus Legality analyzes some of the main obstacles to justice, ranging from judicial corruption, to racism and imperialism. The book culminates in a consideration of that form of crime or lawlessness that poses the most serious threat to the rule of law: vigilante justice masquerading as legality. With its mixture of politics, literature, law, and film, this lively and accessible book offers a timely reflection on the enduring phenomenon of revenge.

Revolution at the Gates By Slavoj Žižek
2011 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 1844677141 | EPUB | 1 MB
The idea of a Lenin renaissance might well provoke an outburst of sarcastic laughter. Marx is OK, but Lenin? Doesn't he stand for the big catastrophe which left its mark on the entire twentieth-century?Lenin, however, deserves wider consideration than this, and his writings of 1917 are testament to a formidable political figure. They reveal his ability to grasp the significance of an extraordinary moment in history. Everything is here, from Lenin-the-ingenious-revolutionary-strategist to Lenin-of-the-enacted-utopia. To use Kierkegaard's phrase, what we can glimpse in these writings is Lenin-in-becoming: not yet Lenin-the-Soviet-institution, but Lenin thrown into an open, contingent situation. In Revolution at the Gates, Slavoj Žižek locates the 1917 writings in their historical context, while his afterword tackles the key question of whether Lenin can be reinvented in our era of "cultural capitalism." Žižek is convinced that, whatever the discussion-the forthcoming crisis of capitalism, the possibility of a redemptive violence, the falsity of liberal tolerance-Lenin's time has come again.

Revolutionary Things: Material Culture and Politics in the Late Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World by Ashli White
English | June 20, 2023 | ISBN: 0300259018 | 392 pages | MOBI | 21 Mb
How objects associated with the American, French, and Haitian revolutions drew diverse people throughout the Atlantic world into debates over revolutionary ideals

"By excavating the power of material objects and visual images to express the fervor and fear of the revolutionary era, Ashli White brings us closer to more fully embodied, more fully human, figures."-Richard Rabinowitz, author of Objects of Love and Regret: A Brooklyn Story
"In this important, innovative book, Ashli White moves nimbly between North America, Europe, and the Caribbean to capture the richness and complexity of material culture in the Age of Revolutions."-Michael Kwass, Johns Hopkins University
Historian Ashli White explores the circulation of material culture during the American, French, and Haitian revolutions, arguing that in the late eighteenth century, radical ideals were contested through objects as well as in texts. She considers how revolutionary things, as they moved throughout the Atlantic, brought people into contact with these transformative political movements in visceral, multiple, and provocative ways.
Focusing on a range of objects-ceramics and furniture, garments and accessories, prints, maps, and public amusements-White shows how material culture held political meaning for diverse populations. Enslaved and free, women and men, poor and elite-all turned to things as a means to realize their varied and sometimes competing visions of revolutionary change.

Rewriting the Break Event : Mennonites and Migration in Canadian Literature By Robert Zacharias
2013 | 241 Pages | ISBN: 0887557473 | EPUB | 1 MB
Despite the fact that Russian Mennonites began arriving in Canada en masse in the 1870s, Mennonite Canadian literature has been marked by a compulsive retelling of the mass migration of some 20,000 Russian Mennonites to Canada following the collapse of the "Mennonite Commonwealth" in the 1920s. This privileging of a seminal dispersal within the community's broader history reveals the ways in which the 1920s narrative has come to function as an origin story, or "break event," for the Russian Mennonites in Canada, serving to affirm a communal identity across national and generational boundaries. Drawing on recent work in diaspora studies, Rewriting the Break Event offers a historicization of Mennonite literary studies in Canada, followed by close readings of five novels that rewrite the Mennonite break event through specific strains of emphasis, including a religious narrative, ethnic narrative, trauma narrative, and meta-narrative. The result is thoughtful and engaging exploration of the shifting contours of Mennonite collective identity, and an exciting new methodology that promises to resituate the discourse of migrant writing in Canada.

Richthofen: A True History of the Red Baron by William E. Burrows
English | June 22, 2023 | ASIN: B0C94H7JJX | 320 pages | EPUB | 3.21 Mb
Originally a cavalryman, Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892-1918), nicknamed the Red Baron, transferred to the German Air Service in 1915. One of the first members of fighter squadron Jasta 2 in 1916, Richthofen quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, becoming leader of Jasta 11 in 1917 and later leading the larger fighter wing known as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus" whose bright-colored aircraft moved from one area of Allied air activity to another, settling on improvised airfields. Richthofen was shot down and killed in April 1918 over France at age 25. Credited with 80 air combat victories, he was a national hero in Germany and was also respected by his enemies.

"The context [of World War I air warfare] can be obtained from William E. Burrows's 'true history,' a very good book. He has not only read the available material, but talked to a great many people who knew Richthofen. The result is as good a look at the withdrawn Prussian personality as we are likely to get." - Pierce Fredericks, New York Times Book Review
"This is a fine biography of the German flying ace of World War I fame, who, at the time of his death at age 25, was already a legend. The author has researched well his subject giving the reader a look at the person, not just the mystique, and reconstructs a few of the Red Baron's famous dog-fights." - US Naval Institute Proceedings
"This 'true history of the Red Baron' gets behind the mystique clinging to the World War I aviation ace to the question of his use, or mis-use, by German propaganda." - Wall Street Journal
"In this intriguing biography, Burrows zooms in on the man behind the myth. He analyzes Richthofen's persisting influence on his compatriots today." - Book World
"The Burrows book does serve to freshen the memory of the Red Baron and his place in history." - The Louisville Times
"William E. Burrows has done, in Richthofen, a sensitive job of examining how a killer is turned into a myth." - Christian Science Monitor

Righteous Strife: How Warring Religious Nationalists Forged Lincoln's Union by Richard Carwardine
English | January 21, 2025 | ISBN: 140004457X | 624 pages | PDF | 28 Mb
The first major account of the American Civil War to give full weight to the central role played by religion, reframing the conflict through Abraham Lincoln's contentious appeals to faith-based nationalism

How did slavery figure in God's plan? Was it the providential role of government to abolish this sin and build a righteous nation? Or did such a mission amount to "religious tyranny" and "pulpit politics," in an effort to strip the southern states of their God-given rights? In 1861, in an already fracturing nation, the tensions surrounding this moral quandary cracked the United States in half, and even formed rifts within the North itself, where antislavery religious nationalists butted heads with conservative religious nationalists over their visions for America's future.
At the center of this melee stood Abraham Lincoln, who would turn to his own faith for guidance, proclaiming more days of national fasting and thanksgiving than any other president before or since. These pauses for spiritual reflection provided the inspirational rhetoric and ideological fuel that sustained the war.
In Righteous Strife, Richard Carwardine gives renewed attention to this crucible of contending religious nationalisms, out of which were forged emancipation, Lincoln's reelection, and his second inaugural address. No understanding of the American Civil War is complete without accounting for this complex dance between church and state-one that continues to define our nation.

2018 | 122 Pages | ISBN: 084475014X | EPUB | 1 MB
Rise of the Revisionists: Russia, China, and Iran is a five-essay volume, edited by the American Enterprise Institute's Gary J. Schmitt, that examines the three rising powers as they challenge the US and the global order in three critical regions of the world. Essays by the American Enterprise Institute's Frederick W. Kagan on Russia and Dan Blumenthal on China and by Foundation for the Defense of Democracies Senior Fellow Reuel Marc Gerecht on Iran analyze the historical roots of each country's ambitions, their strategic goals, and possible US policies for meeting the challenges and threats posed by each. Those essays are framed by an introduction by Gary Schmitt that places the tests facing the US foreign policy in a broader strategic framework and by a concluding essay by Hudson Institute Scholar Walter Russell Mead that looks to the Father of History, Thucydides, to provide insight into the complex set of domestic and foreign realities that shape American statecraft in this most challenging time.
