Ancient Thrace and the Classical World: Treasures from Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece
by Jeffrey Spier, Timothy Potts
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1606069403 | 340 Pages | PDF | 24 MB

A captivating examination of the profound impact Thracian art and culture had on the Greeks and the entire northern Aegean region.
The Thracians-a collection of tribal peoples who inhabited territories north of ancient Greece, an area that comprises present-day Bulgaria, much of Romania, and parts of Greece and Turkey-were renowned for their skill as warriors and horsemen, as well as for their wealth in precious metals. Thracians left few written records, and knowledge of their history and customs has long been dependent on brief accounts from ancient Greek authors. They appeared in Greek myth as formidable adversaries in the Trojan War, cruel kings, and followers of the ecstatic god Dionysos. Spectacular archaeological discoveries made in Thracian lands during modern times, however, have provided firsthand evidence of this remarkable culture, illuminating Thrace's interactions with Greece, Persia, and Rome.
Ancient Thrace and the Classical World reproduces more than two hundred glorious objects ****** from the end of the Bronze Age, around 1200 BC, to the end of the first century AD, when Thrace became part of the Roman Empire. Experts explore topics such as Thracian royal tombs, the Greek colonization of the Black Sea coast, Thracian religion, and more, placing Thracian culture in a broader historical context that highlights its complex relationships with the surrounding region.

Another Humanity: Decolonial Ethics from Du Bois to Arendt
by Benjamin P. Davis
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1399548581 | 281 Pages | PDF | 2.28 MB

"Another Humanity is a brilliant book-its brilliance lies in its humility."
-Massimiliano Tomba, author of Insurgent Universality
Looking forward to a new, increasingly creolized century, in 1997 the Martinican poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant asked, "Do we have the right and the means to live another dimension of humanity? But how?"
Building on the defense of human rights he outlined in Choose Your Bearing, in Another Humanity Benjamin P. Davis traces the figures of "humanity" and "the human" in W. E. B. Du Bois, Édouard Glissant, Sylvia Wynter, and Edward Said. He concludes with a reflection on Hannah Arendt's post-war correspondence with Karl Jaspers, which offers philosophical and personal lessons for a new humanism as we witness ongoing wars today.

Antigender Fashion: The Possibilities of Gender-Fluid and Non-Binary Fashion Design
by Judith Beyer
English | 2025 | ISBN: 135046600X | 255 Pages | True PDF | 14.4 MB

Antigender Fashion is a rich examination of gender fluidity in contemporary fashion design, Judith Beyer develops an emerging new theoretical framework for understanding how fashion can blur and challenge gender boundaries.
How is gender fluidity in contemporary fashion different from 20th century androgyny or millennial unisex styles? Like antifashion, which opposes and challenges fashion, Beyer argues that antigender fashion seeks to dismantle and confront binary gender signifiers. After tracing the history of gender-blurring fashion from Marlene Dietrich's androgynous tailoring to Alessandro Michele's floral Gucci suits, case studies of four high-profile fashion brands reveal the diverse approaches to gender-fluidity in contemporary fashion.
Investigating each case study through multiple theoretical perspectives - from gender studies to gothic horror, cyborg theory to Afrofuturism - Beyer situates antigender fashion in a rich theoretical landscape and illuminates exciting new critical directions for students and researchers. Can antigender fashion influence the construction of contemporary masculinities and femininities - and can it be a catalyst for change?

Apocalypse: How Catastrophe Transformed Our World and Can Forge New Futures by Lizzie Wade
English | May 6th, 2025 | ISBN: 0063097303 | 320 pages | True EPUB | 3.40 MB
* A ✅Publishers Weekly Most Anticipated History Book of the Year * A The Millions Most Anticipated Spring Book of the Year

A richly imagined new view on the great human tradition of apocalypse, from the rise of Homo sapiens to the climate instability of our present, that defies conventional wisdom and long-held stories about our deep past to reveal how cataclysmic events are not irrevocable endings, but transformations.
A drought lasts for decades, a disease rips through a city, a civilization collapses. When we finally uncover the ruins, we ask: What happened? The good news is, we've been here before. History is long, and people have already confronted just about every apocalypse we're facing today. But these days, archaeologists are getting better at seeing stories of survival, transformation, and even progress hidden within those histories of collapse and destruction. Perhaps, we begin to see, apocalypses do not destroy worlds, but create them anew.
Apocalypse offers a new way of understanding human history, reframing it as a series of crises and cataclysms that we survived, moments of choice in an evolution of humanity that has never been predetermined or even linear. Here Lizzie Wade asks us to reckon with our long-held narratives of these events, from the end of Old Kingdom Egypt, the collapse of the Classic Maya, to the Black Death, and shows us how people lived through and beyond them-and even considered what a new world could look like in their wake.
The more we learn about apocalypses past, the more hope we have that we will survive our own. It won't be pleasant. It won't be fair. The world will be different on the other side, and our cultures and communities-perhaps even our species-will be different too.

Architecture, Iconography, and Text: New Studies on the Northwest Palace Reliefs of Ashurnasirpal II
by J. Caleb Howard
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9042951516 | 211 Pages | PDF | 46 MB

The papers published in this volume attempt to move scholarship forward in the interpretation of the Northwest Palace reliefs of Ashurnasirpal II, with particular focus on the intersection of their architectural setting, their loaded iconography, and the text of the so-called Standard Inscription incised across their faces. The papers deal with both the interpretation of the reliefs in their ancient setting and their modern reception and heuristic use across the boundaries of disciplines. They address direct and indirect interaction of iconography and text in physical space, the roles of scribes and artisans in the production of the architecture-iconography-text ensemble, along with its impact on ancient viewers. The ensemble's impact on modern viewers, and particularly its reception in the nineteenth century, are also examined, as well as the application of its hermeneutic analysis to the study of Hebrew poetry.

Aristotle on the Essence of Human Thought
by Klaus Corcilius, Andrea Falcon
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0198921799 | 329 Pages | True PDF | 2.5 MB

Aristotle on the Essence of Human Thought offers a novel reading of one of the most difficult stretches of text in the whole Aristotelian corpus, De anima III 4-8, showing that this stretch of text contains a unitary and coherent account of the essence of the human capacity for thought. Aristotle gives this capacity the name nous. Nous is the first principle, and ultimate explanans, of human thinking. The volume argues for four key claims. The first claim is rationalism: humans come to know the world around us via two fundamentally different cognitive powers: nous and perception. They are fundamentally different cognitive powers because the nature of their corresponding objects is fundamentally different. The second claim is essentialism: the human capacity for thought is defined as a capacity for directly grasping essences of everything there is. It is this very capacity that Aristotle shows to be the principle of all human thinking. According to the third claim, separatism, human nous is a very special kind of power. It is unmixed with the body, has no dedicated bodily organ, and is separable from the body. As a result, it cannot be assimilated to any of the other parts of the soul. While nous belongs to our essence as human beings, it is not part of the natural world. Finally, the volume argues for embeddedness in the cognitive soul: human nous is always embedded in a cognitive soul, which among other things means that the distinctive activity of human nous-thinking-can only take place in the context of a larger set of activities which are common to the body and the soul.

Aristotle on the Nature and Causes of Perception
by Robert Roreitner
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009533819 | 286 Pages | True PDF | 6.3 MB

In this book Robert Roreitner offers a fresh interpretation of Aristotle's philosophically intriguing answers to what the nature of perception is, how it can be explained, and how perception is distinguished from mere appearance. He argues that for Aristotle, perception is a complete passive activity, and explains why this notion merely appears self-contradictory to us. He shows how Aristotle succeeds in integrating causal, qualitative, and relational aspects of perception, and explains why he is neither a 'spiritualist' nor a 'materialist'. He presses and resolves an unappreciated dilemma for Aristotle's hylomorphic account of perception and the role of the soul therein. This rich study shows that although Aristotle's understanding of perception may be in many respects outmoded, its core insights remain philosophically engaging.

Assemblages of Cancer: Experiences and Contexts of Breast Cancer in the UK, France and Italy
by Cinzia Greco
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1526171449 | 224 Pages | True PDF | 1.2 MB

Assemblages of cancer offers an in-depth comparative analysis of breast cancer, linking patients' experiences with the biomedical, political and cultural context of the disease. The book is based on ten years of ethnographic research with patients and medical professionals across the UK, France and Italy, highlighting both the shared specificities and internal variations of breast cancer across these three countries. It shows how breast cancer experiences can be best understood as provisional assemblages involving transformed bodies, uncertainties linked to a possible relapse, and tinkering with standardised protocols and pathways to make treatments work for each patient.
The book explores how experiences of breast cancer are transformed by universal healthcare systems impacted by processes of privatisation, local variations in the workings of biomedicine, and changes to the 'pink ribbon' discourses and advocacy. It presents an in-depth analysis of how breast cancer and its treatments alter not only women's bodies but also their personal and professional lives. It further analyses patients' strategies to attempt build new meaning and values around the uncertainties brought by cancer and its consequences.
Assemblages of cancer is an essential contribution to the social studies of medicine that, by redefining the relations between illness, biomedicine and society, develops a new understanding of breast cancer in contemporary Europe.
