Atualmente, os mesopotâmicos e a sua religião são fontes de curiosidade, mas há milhares de anos atrás, a religião era parte integrante das suas vidas. Desde o seu nascimento até à sua morte, as divindades rodeavam-nos e, quer as suas interações sociais fossem ao nível de uma cidade mais pequena ou de um Estado-nação maior, as divindades desempenhavam papéis fundamentais no tecido social da sua sociedade. Enquanto os israelitas eram um só povo que adorava um único deus, a Babilónia teve uma sucessão de dinastias diferentes derivadas de muitos grupos étnicos e, uma vez que a religião babilónica teve origem numa pletora de fontes, houve muito poucos elementos que mantiveram a primazia ao longo da história da cidade. Por exemplo, a influência suméria fez com que os cidadãos adorassem muitas divindades na cidade, mas esse número foi reduzido após a chegada dos amoritas ao poder.
Apesar de ter sido uma das civilizações mais avançadas do seu tempo e responsável pelos sítios urbanos pré-históricos mais antigos do subcontinente indiano, a Civilização do Vale do Indo foi esquecida durante milénios, até que arqueólogos do século XX redescobriram e iniciaram escavações em Mohenjo-daro e Harappa. Embora a civilização tenha florescido principalmente entre aproximadamente 3000 e 1500 a.C., estes antigos indianos tiveram influências mais duradouras na urbanização do subcontinente indiano durante séculos, graças aos seus edifícios e muralhas monumentais, enormes plataformas feitas pelo homem, técnicas arquitectónicas inovadoras e provas de que se dedicavam ao comércio a grandes distâncias, com artefactos de alta qualidade enviados do Vale do Indo até à Mesopotâmia e mesmo a África.
Uma das razões pelas quais Zeus continua a ser um dos deuses mais reconhecidos da história deve-se à propagação da sua influência. Devido às conquistas de Alexandre, o Grande, Zeus foi levado juntamente com outros elementos da helenização para o Egito e o Próximo Oriente e, alguns séculos mais tarde, Roma adoptou-o como o seu próprio deus principal, Júpiter. A partir daí, foi exportado para todo o Império Romano e fundido com vários outros deuses locais. Em última análise, Zeus foi um deus proeminente desde o período da história pré-recordada até à cristianização da Grécia, que ficou completa no início do século VII d.C. A Teogonia de Hesíodo tem todas as caraterísticas de um "hino à glória de Zeus, o rei".[1] A razão para isso é que, ao longo da obra, Zeus é louvado como sendo o progenitor da "ordem" no cosmos, depois de ter derrotado os seus inimigos e deixado de combater monstros. Em breve se tornará evidente que Zeus não é apenas o "senhor dos deuses e dos homens", mas também o líder revolucionário de um novo sistema de poder.
