Leo Strauss, "Leo Strauss on Political Philosophy: Responding to the Challenge of Positivism and Historicism "
English | ISBN: 022681680X | 2021 | 270 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Leo Strauss is known primarily for reviving classical political philosophy through careful analyses of works by ancient thinkers. As with his published writings, Strauss's seminars devoted to specific philosophers were notoriously dense, accessible only to graduate students and scholars with a good command of the subject. In 1965, however, Strauss offered an introductory course on political philosophy at the University of Chicago. Using a conversational style, he sought to make political philosophy, as well as his own ideas and methods, understandable to those with little background on the subject.

Leo Strauss on Political Philosophy brings together the lectures that comprise Strauss's "Introduction to Political Philosophy." Strauss begins by emphasizing the importance of political philosophy in determining the common good of society and critically examining the two most powerful contemporary challenges to the possibility of using political theory to learn about and develop the best political order: positivism and historicism. In seeking the common good, classical political philosophers like Plato and Aristotle did not distinguish between political philosophy and political science. Today, however, political philosophy must contend with the contemporary belief that it is impossible to know what the good society really is. Strauss emphasizes the need to study the history of political philosophy to see whether the changes in the understanding of nature and conceptions of justice that gradually led people to believe that it is not possible to determine what the best political society is are either necessary or valid. In doing so, he ranges across the entire history of political philosophy, providing a valuable, thematically coherent foundation, including explications of many canonical thinkers, such as Auguste Comte and Immanuel Kant, about whom Strauss did not write extensively in his published writings.

Let the Next Leaders Lead: A Blueprint for Developing the Next Generations of Leaders by Dr. Sheila Trapp
English | August 13, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DD5JX8FZ | 127 pages | EPUB | 2.44 Mb
There is so much to learn from the next generations coming after us. They are not like us, and it seems that all the things we are finally discovering in our later years, they have it. Maybe it is because they are the best of us or are learning from our past. The bottom line is that they have something worthy of studying, learning, and admiring. They are an inspiration that we will be okay in our later years. As coaches and leaders, tapping into their essence is a commodity we need not miss because it will push our agendas for better leadership for tomorrow to a landscape of helping the already better leaders. Their lessons to teach us are immeasurable.

The next generations of leaders are focused on things that attach to their being... not their belonging. It is as if they already know that belonging is not the goal. As much as belonging is nice, it is not imperative to who they are and what they bring to this world. The diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts we are engaged in today...they were born with their premise. Their idea of DEI is simple... be yourself and appreciate me doing the same. They seem more comfortable with the idea of the "when you get me... you get all of this" framework, which took many of us years to achieve. They see that the change in the world we seek is found in authenticity. Let's go on a journey together to learn about the next generations of leaders.. to help them... which ultimately helps us all... and brightens a future of positive possibilities.

Letters to Gisèle: 1951-1970 by Paul Celan, edited by Bertrand Badiou, translated by Jason Kavett
English | December 10, 2024 | ISBN: 1681378302 | True EPUB | 544 pages | 17.7 MB
Insightful and provocative letters by a great twentieth-century poet to his artist wife about life and, revealingly, his own writing. An intimate look at this canonical poet's process, mental health, and quotidian moments during the early 1950s.

One of the most significant European poets of the twentieth century, Paul Celan came from an Eastern European Jewish family and lost his parents to the death camps of World War II. Transplanted to Paris, he produced a body of work that was an ongoing confrontation with that history of loss and with the German language. His poems, anguished and unsleeping, have by now been translated into many languages, becoming a touchstone for poets, writers, and philosophers.
Letters to Gisèle presents the letters Celan wrote to his wife, the French visual artist Gisèle Celan-Lestrange, over the course of close to twenty years, along with letters to the couple's son, Eric, and letters from Gisèle to Paul. They provide an intimate view of his literary career and troubled life, which was marked by repeated stays in psychiatric clinics. They also provide an unparalleled glimpse into Celan's poetic workshop, including his own word-for-word renderings from German into French of more than a dozen of his poems. These he addressed to Gisèle as an ongoing, informal German lesson. They figure too as messages from the heart. Presented here trilingually, these overlapping versions of Celan's poems open up new dimensions of his famously hermetic poetry, as dazzling as it is dark.
This edition includes some poems in the original German and Celan's own translations of them.

Marinos Diamantides, "Levinas, Law, Politics"
English | 2007 | pages: 227 | ISBN: 1904385613, 0415574374 | PDF | 1,4 mb
Emmanuel Levinas' re-formulation of subjectivity, responsibility and the good has radically influenced post-structuralist thought. Political and legal theory, however, have only marginally profited from his moral philosophy. Levinas' theme of one's infinite responsibility for the other has often been romanticized by some advocates of multiculturalism and natural justice.

In this volume, political theorists, philosophers and legal scholars critically engage with this idealization of Levinas' ethics. The authors show that his crucial formulation of the idea of 'the other in me' does not offer a quick cure for today's nationalist, racist and religious divides. Nor does his notion of anarchic responsibility provide immediate relief for the agony of dealing with matters of life and death. The rebelliousness of Levinas' thought is rediscovered here and used to challenge preconceptions of social, legal and individual responsibility.

Aurelian Craiutu, "Liberalism under Siege; The Political Thought of the French Doctrinaires"
English | 2003 | pages: 357 | ISBN: 0739106589 | PDF | 2,0 mb
Liberalism under Siege: The Political Thought of the French Doctrinaries is a compelling examination of the French Doctrinaries, a largely neglected group of liberal thinkers in post-revolutionary France who were proponents of a nuanced sociological and historical approach to political theory. The first systematic interpretation of the French Doctrinaries' political writings to appear in English, Liberalism under Siege combines textual analysis and historical interpretation to explore the Doctrinaires' ideas on the French Revolution, democracy, political power, sovereignty of reason, publicity, capacity, and representative government. Aurelian Craiutu's detailed work is not only an argument for the reappraisal of the Bourbon Restoration as a golden age of political thought; it is also a passionate and persuasive addition to contemporary debates about the diversity of liberalism.

Claire Norton, "Liberating Histories"
English | ISBN: 041585654X | 2018 | 258 pages | AZW3 | 1034 KB
Liberating Histories makes an original, scholarly contribution to contemporary debates surrounding the cultural and political relevance of historical practices. Arguing against the idea that specifically historical readings of the past are necessary or are compelled by the force of past events themselves, this book instead focuses on other forms of past-talk and how they function in politically empowering ways against social injustices.

Challenging the authority and constraints of academic history over the past, this book explores various forms of past-talk, including art, films, activism, memory, nostalgia and archives. Across seven clear chapters, Claire Norton and Mark Donnelly show how activists and campaigners have used forms of past-talk to unsettle 'common sense' thinking about political and social problems, how journalists, artists, curators, filmmakers and performers have referenced the past in their practices of advocacy, and how grassroots archivists help to circulate materials that challenge the power of authorised institutional archives to determine what gets to count as a demonstrable feature of the past and whose voices are part of the 'historical record'.

Adam Geczy, "Libertine Fashion: Sexual Freedom, Rebellion, and Style "
English | ISBN: 1350054089 | 2020 | 256 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Libertine practices have long been associated with transgression and social deviance. This innovative book is the first to focus fully on the relationship between libertinism as a social phenomenon and as a form of fashion. Taking the reader from early modernity to the present day, Adam Geczy and Vicki Karaminas reveal how the connection between clothing and the taboo, the erotic, and the forbidden is at the heart of "libertine fashion".

Moving from the decadent courts of Charles II and Louis XV to the catwalks of the 21st century, Libertine Fashion examines literary and sartorial figures ranging from the Marquis de Sade and Lord Byron to Oscar Wilde, Josephine Baker, Colette, and Madonna. Focusing on libertinism as a sartorial practice and identity, this book traces the genealogy of the concept through the proto feminists of the English Reformation, the hedonistic decadents of the

Lie Theory and Its Applications in Physics
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819764521 | 570 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 63 MB
Traditionally, Lie theory is a tool to build mathematical models for physical systems. Recently, the trend is towards geometrization of the mathematical description of physical systems and objects. A geometric approach to a system yields in general some notion of symmetry, which is very helpful in understanding its structure. Geometrization and symmetries are meant in their widest sense, i.e., representation theory, algebraic geometry, number theory, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras and groups, superalgebras and supergroups, groups and quantum groups, noncommutative geometry, symmetries of linear and nonlinear partial differential operators, special functions, and others. Furthermore, the necessary tools from functional analysis are included. This is a large interdisciplinary and interrelated field.

Maharaj K. Pandit, "Life in the Himalaya: An Ecosystem at Risk"
English | ISBN: 0674971744 | 2017 | 384 pages | AZW3 | 5 MB
The collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates around fifty million years ago profoundly altered earth's geography and regional climates. The rise of the Himalaya led to intensification of the monsoon, the birth of massive glaciers and turbulent rivers, and an efflorescence of ecosystems along the most extreme elevational gradient on Earth. When the Ice Age ended, humans became part of this mix, and today nearly one quarter of the world's population inhabits its river basins, from Afghanistan to Myanmar. Life in the Himalaya examines the region's geophysical and biological systems and explores the past and future of human sustainability in the mountain's shadow.

Maharaj Pandit divides the Himalaya's history into four phases. During the first, the mountain and its ecosystems formed. In the second, humans altered the landscape, beginning with nomadic pastoralism, continuing to commercial deforestation, and culminating in pockets of resistance to forest exploitation. The third phase saw a human population explosion, accompanied by road and dam building and other large-scale infrastructure that degraded ecosystems and caused species extinctions. Pandit outlines a future networking phase which holds the promise of sustainable living within the mountain's carrying capacity.
Today, the Himalaya is threatened by recurrent natural disasters and is at risk of catastrophic loss of life. If humans are to have a sustainable future there, Pandit argues, they will need to better understand the region's geological vulnerability, ecological fragility, and sociocultural sensitivity.
