Improving nitrogen use efficiency in crop production (Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science, 150) by Professor Claudia Wagner-Riddle, Professor Brent Kaiser, Professor Nandula Raghuram
English | March 12, 2024 | ISBN: 1801464707 | 454 pages | PDF | 9.51 Mb
"This book is a jewel, its many facets revealing the full range of advanced technical and technological data and innovative strategies in nitrogen management aimed at improving agricultural productivity and supporting sustainable and resilient agriculture, while also minimizing negative environmental impacts in line with sustainable development goals." (Book Review Published in International Journal of Environmental Studies - Professor Nadia Boutaleb, Hassan II University of Casablanca, Morocco)

In the last 60 years fertiliser use in agriculture has increased by 900%. However, it's been reported that up to 80% of these fertilisers are not utilised by crops but are lost to the environment as nitrous oxide, ammonia and nitrate. Improving nitrogen use efficiency is recognised as one possible solution to reducing the sector's environmental impact and optimising its productivity and sustainability in the face of increasing pressure to feed a growing population.
Improving nitrogen use efficiency in crop production reviews recent advances in understanding nitrogen cycling in soil as well as advances in monitoring nitrogen status and synchronising fertiliser application. The book also considers developments in inorganic fertilisers to improve nitrogen use efficiency, as well as how more organic sources of nitrogen, such as livestock manure, can be optimised to achieve the same goal.

In Case of Loss by Lutz Seiler, translated by Martyn Crucefix
English | April 2, 2024 | ISBN: 1913505782 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 1.5 MB
In Case of Loss gathers the best of Lutz Seiler's non-fiction from the last twenty-five years, revealing essays that are different to, but on a par with, his fiction and poetry. Seiler's anecdotal and associative pieces throw fascinating light on literature and his background, not least the environmental and human catastrophe of the Soviet-era mining in the community he grew up in, 'the tired villages . . . beneath which lay the ore, uranium'. Other essays focus on poetry, including his awakening to it while waiting in an army truck on his military service, and there are pieces on German poets such as Ernst Meister, Jürgen Becker and Peter Huchel. The title essay describes the poet Huchel's notebook, a kind of dictionary of images organised by mood and location.

Providing a perfect entry to Seiler's work, In Case of Loss sees one of Europe's most original writers speak with openness and insight in essays full of a poet's attention to the importance of often overlooked objects and lives.

In Defense of Barbarism: Non-Whites Against the Empire by Louisa Yousfi, translated by Andy Bliss
English | January 21, 2025 | ISBN: 180429442X | True EPUB | 112 pages | 0.3 MB
A provocative, beautiful and defiant essay highlighting the pitfalls of integration in France by a talented young writer with North African roots

Is social integration all it's cracked up to be? Not in the defiant view of first-time French author Louisa Yousfi, who herself has North African roots. Taking its inspiration from the leading Algerian writer Kateb Yacine
('I'm better off not being too cultivated. I have to retain a certain barbarianism'), this provocative essay explores ways of resisting the cultural and moral hegemony of the French "Empire."
Citing a wide range of cultural references, from the characters of Chester Himes and Toni Morrison to the in-your-face rap lyrics of the 'street prophets' Booba and PNL, she extolls the virtues of her inner barbarian and champions those brave souls who refuse to be 'domesticated'.
Challenging the conventional wisdom that posits integration as an unalloyed good, she shows how assimilation can equate to the loss of traditions, religion, language, and culture. And, whether discussing 9/11, the Algerian colonial era, the media treatment of celebrities of Arab origin, or the second-class status of French citizens from an immigrant background, she holds an uncompromising mirror up to the West and its moral shortcomings, as if to say: a barbarian I may be, but who is the real monster?
Yousfi, a young, charismatic and dynamic author who uses a refreshingly wide range of cultural reference points, including rap music, to construct her argument, opens up the path of a decolonial cultural politics and an aesthetics of resistance.

Matt Cook, "In The Small Of My Backyard"
English | ISBN: 0916397785 | 2002 | 96 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Spoken word artist Matt Cook tackles life perceptively in bars, his neighborhood, and at work. His poems are a shrewd blend of cracker-barrel philosopher and an over-caffeinated Groucho Marx. Quirky and humorous, his writing is perfect for people who think they hate poetry (and those who love it, too).

K. P. Stoller MD, "Incurable Me: Why the Best Medical Research Does Not Make It into Clinical Practice"
English | ISBN: 1510707980 | 2016 | 216 pages | AZW3, MOBI | 2 MB + 2 MB
In Incurable Me, a maverick physician brings transparency to some of medicine's most closely guarded secrets. As he establishes a link between commerce and medical research, K. P. Stoller also explains how to treat some of the most worrisome diseases and conditions afflicting humans todayincluding Lyme disease, brain trauma, dementia, and autism.

Dr. Stoller maintains that the best evidence in medical research is not incorporated into clinical practice unless the medical cartel has the potential to make large amounts of money promoting the results of the research. Stoller takes his provocative argument a step further, maintaining that if specific research conflicts with a powerful entity's financial interests, the likely result will be an effort to suppress or distort the results. Stoller cites numerous examples, including corporate influence on GMO labeling and public health.
Stoller also explores how revolving-door-employment" between the Centers for Disease Control and large pharmaceutical companies can affect research resultsas well as our health. Written in an accessible style that is thoroughly appropriate for a lay audience,

India's Near East: A New History by Avinash Paliwal
English | November 1, 2024 | ISBN: 0197794696 | 480 pages | PDF | 9.83 Mb
India's near east encompasses Bangladesh, Myanmar and the Indian states of the 'Northeast'-Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Celebrated as a theatre of geo-economic connectivity typified by India's 'Act East' policy, the region is key not only to India's great-power rivalry with China, which first boiled over in the 1962 war, but to the idea(s) of India itself. It is also one of the most intricately partitioned lands anywhere on Earth. Rent by communal and class violence, the region has birthed extreme forms of religious and ethnic nationalisms and communist movements. The Indian state's survival instinct and pursuit of regional hegemony have only accentuated such extremes.

This book scripts a new history of India's eastward-looking diplomacy and statecraft. Narrated against the backdrop of separatist resistance within India's own northeastern states, as well as rivalry with Beijing and Islamabad in Yangon and Dhaka, it offers a simple but compelling argument. The aspirations of 'Act East' mask an uncomfortable truth: India privileges political stability over economic opportunity in this region. In his chronicle of a state's struggle to overcome war, displacement and interventionism, Avinash Paliwal lays bare the limits of independent India's influence in its near east.

F. Tomasson Jannuzi, "India's Persistent Dilemma: The Political Economy Of Agrarian Reform"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367016761 | EPUB | pages: 256 | 0.5 mb
This study shows that the failure of successive Indian governments to effect meaningful agrarian reforms has led to a political economy in rural India that is shaped, as it was prior to independence, largely by the interests of an elite minority of landholders. This group, Jannuzi argues, has worked both to deny the socioeconomic changes promised by modern India's own founders and to thwart the needs and interests of the rural majority who continue to lack secure rights in land. Examining the government's inability to establish a coherent national program for agrarian reform, the author focuses on the failure of a process that, on the one hand, has guaranteed India's landholding elites strong and continuous representation in the shaping of such agrarian reforms as were legislated and partially implemented and, on the other, has given no meaningful voice to the people at the base of what he calls "the hierarchy of interests in land" in rural India. The author skillfully interweaves three major themes: (1) the remarkable continuity in the thinking of policy makers in both colonial and independent India as they struggled to articulate and promote agrarian policies; (2) the persistence of economic arguments for agrarian reform that emphasize the idea that large units of cultivation offer inherent productive efficiency advantages over small holdings; and (3) the role of both British and Indian decision makers in maintaining a conceptual dichotomy between the issue of increasing productivity and the issue of distributive justice. Noting the expanding political participation of India's rural poor as well as the continuing need for increased agricultural productivity, Jannuzi asserts that future Indian leaders must emphasize the complementarity of the goals of productivity growth and distributive justice. As they seek to form a political nexus with the rural majority, future leaders will be challenged to implement agrarian policies that actually transform the political econ

Coll Thrush, "Indigenous London: Native Travelers at the Heart of Empire "
English | ISBN: 0300206305 | 2016 | 328 pages | AZW3 | 4 MB
An imaginative retelling of London's history, framed through the experiences of Indigenous travelers who came to the city over the course of more than five centuries

"Thrush has certainly offered a powerful corrective to the usual geographies imagined for Indigenous people in the past, as well as a new layer to the palimpsest history of Britain's imperial capital."-Kate Fullagar, William and Mary Quarterly
London is famed both as the ancient center of a former empire and as a modern metropolis of bewildering complexity and diversity. In Indigenous London, historian Coll Thrush offers an imaginative vision of the city's past crafted from an almost entirely new perspective: that of Indigenous children, women, and men who traveled there, willingly or otherwise, from territories that became Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, beginning in the sixteenth century. They included captives and diplomats, missionaries and shamans, poets and performers. Some, like the Powhatan noblewoman Pocahontas, are familiar; others, like an Odawa boy held as a prisoner of war, have almost been lost to history. In drawing together their stories and their diverse experiences with a changing urban culture, Thrush also illustrates how London learned to be a global, imperial city and how Indigenous people were central to that process.

Hector Diaz Polanco, "Indigenous Peoples In Latin America: The Quest For Self-determination"
English | 1997 | ISBN: 0813386993 | EPUB | pages: 180 | 0.6 mb
This book deals with the perennial tensions between ethnic groups and the modern nation-state and does so from the perspective of a leading Mexican anthropologist with deep and long experience in these matters. As such, it is both a superb introduction to the basic issues and a presentation of the author's own original contributions. The appearance of this book in English gives North American readers access to these important and political currents in Latin American anthropology and political economy. It is required reading for anyone wishing to understand the current recrudescence of indigenous peoples at this moment in history?when conventional wisdom had predicted its demise.
