Emre Ozsoz, "Understanding Dollarization: Causes and Impact of Partial Dollarization on Developing and Emerging Markets"
English | ISBN: 3110442183 | 2016 | 139 pages | EPUB, PDF | 17 MB + 3 MB
A very commonly observed phenomenon in developing and emerging market economies is the use of another country's currency (whether the US dollar or another currency) in lieu or in addition to the local currency. The most common type of this financial phenomenon is partial (de facto) dollarization where foreign currencies are used side by side with local currency for saving and borrowing purposes in addition to serving as medium of exchange.

Governments in these countries have been encouraging dollarization for years by allowing their citizens to save and borrow from local banks in foreign currency. Yet the existence of multiple currencies on banks' balance sheets on both the asset and liability side poses risks to the health and stability of the banking system.

E. C. H. Keskitalo, "Understanding Human-Nature Practices for Environmental Management: Examples from Northern Europe "
English | ISBN: 1032770570 | 2025 | 220 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Nature has often been understood in literature through a disjunction to human systems. This can be seen in the nature-culture binary, or even more clearly in the opposition of 'wilderness' to 'civilization'.

Drawing on historical and present-day examples and case studies from Northern Europe, this book critically examines the ways in which the use of such dichotomies can be transcended to respond to sustainability challenges. Using illustrative examples, the authors demonstrate how shared histories and development of land use continue to impact multiple practices today. The book explores the prerequisites for environmental management approaches that counterpose the nature-culture binaries that are present in existing governance mechanisms.

Understanding the Medieval Meditative Ascent: Augustine, Anselm, Boethius, and Dante By Robert McMahon
2006 | 284 Pages | ISBN: 0813214378 | PDF | 1 MB
The Confessions, Proslogion, and Consolation of Philosophy, like the Divine Comedy, all enact Platonist ascents. Each has a pilgrim figure, guided dialogically on a journey of understanding. Each rises to progressively higher levels of understanding and culminates in a supreme intellectual vision. The higher levels contain and surpass earlier understandings and thereby reconfigure them, but implicitly, for the questing pilgrim rarely stops to reflect on the stages of his ascent. Augustine's conclusions about time in book 11, for example, embrace memory as "time past," but he does not reconsider his account of memory in book 10 from this new perspective. He leaves this task for his reader's meditation, as a spiritual exercise. In this way, a Platonist ascent generates implied meditative meanings, which scholars have explored only in part. Each work calls us to read forward, on its journey of understanding, and to meditate backwards on the stages of the ascent and the relations between them. Augustine, Anselm, Boethius, and Dante wrote for readers experienced in meditating on the Bible, adept at exploring relations between far distant passages. They designed these works as spiritual exercises for the same kind of reading and meditation. Understanding the Medieval Meditative Ascent uses literary analysis to discover new philosophical meanings in these works. Clearly written in nontechnical language, its account of their literary structures and of the hidden meanings they generate will inform nonspecialist and specialist alike.

Understanding Vulnerability and Resilience: A Guide for Professional Staff who Work with Vulnerable Others By Graham Russell
2023 | 218 Pages | ISBN: 113849030X | EPUB | 1 MB
This book offers an accessible and evidence-based approach for professional staff to improve their interactions with vulnerable people. Drawing upon contemporary research from a broad array of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, economics, biology and the neurosciences, it demonstrates how vulnerability and resilience are not fixed personality traits, as is commonly assumed, but rather fluid and dynamic states that result from inhibitory and developmental factors that reside within individuals and their external environments. Each chapter focuses on factors that create vulnerability and those that promote resilience with reference to important subjects, such as child development, epigenetics, trauma, shame, addiction, poverty, emotional intelligence, personality, empathy, compassion and behaviour-change. Attention is given to the role of positive, early life experiences in creating an internal working model of the world that is based on trust, intimacy and hope and how the root causes of vulnerability often lie in the cyclical relationship that exists between child maltreatment, trauma and socially deprived environments that cumulatively act to keep people locked in states of inter-generational poverty. The author explores pressing and important workplace issues, such as occupational stress and burnout, and highlights the urgent need for compassionate systems of management that are functionally equipped to address human error, stress and trauma in complex professional arenas where staff are continually exposed to other peoples' suffering. The book also demonstrates how strategies and processes which coerce individuals and groups into changing their behaviour are generally counterproductive and it explains how resilient change is invariably supported by strategies that enhance trust, cooperation, personal control and self-efficacy.This book will benefit professional staff, including health, emergency and social services, humanitarian workers, counsellors and therapists, as well as students who want to learn more about the conceptual frameworks that explain vulnerability and resilience.

Unheard Voices of the Young Egyptian Brothers: Pathways of Activism after 2013
by Doha Abdelgawad
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0755650484 | 229 Pages | True PDF | 1.92 MB

Drawing upon extensive fieldwork, this book unveils the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood intra-dynamics by examining the emerging pathways of political disengagement and radicalization in the aftermath of 2013 Coup. It explores how the 2011 waves of protest and the 2013 military takeover of power - two contradictory phases, in terms of their implications for political Islam - shaped young members' perceptions towards Egyptian politics, violence and the role of Islamic political groups. This offers a key to understanding the ideological and strategic evolution of Islamists, in alignment with regional changes such as the rise of transnational jihadist groups and the fading of popular protest in the Arab region. The book relies on Social Movement Theory and contentious politics literature to develop a relational approach for analysing the positionalities of the young Brothers. This elucidates change within Islamic groups as a multi-layered, evolving phenomenon that cannot be attributed solely to either ideological or structural changes, but rather to manifold factors operating at different levels. It also rejects the prevailing binary classification of moderate versus radical activism when seeking to understand the effects of repression on the trajectories of Islamic movements' members.

Unica Zürn: Art, Writing and Post-War Surrealism by Esra Plumer
English | June 30, 2022 | ISBN: 1784530360, 1350296953 | True PDF | 272 pages | 47.6 MB
Diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1950s, writer and artist Unica Zürn produced a wealth of remarkable textual and visual material while in psychiatric institutions across Germany and France. While Zürn is often discussed in relation to her partner, the controversial artist Hans Bellmer, this innovative book moves beyond the familiar model of the overlooked 'woman behind the man' and re-introduces her as a member of the French Surrealist group.

In the first text on Unica Zürn in English, Esra Plumer presents Zürn's life and work in light of the artist's individual experiences of the Second World War, post-war Surrealism and mental illness, at the same time revealing wider aspects of her artistic practice in relation to her contemporaries. Plumer also reveals how the techniques of anagrams and automatism (writing and drawing methods designed to unlock the subconscious mind) form the pillars of Zürn's artistic creative output, which carry her work into the wider theoretical circles of psychoanalytic theory and post-structuralist thought.

Universalism without Uniformity: Explorations in Mind and Culture By Julia L. Cassaniti; Usha Menon
2017 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 022650154X | PDF | 1 MB
One of the major questions of cultural psychology is how to take diversity seriously while acknowledging our shared humanity. This collection, edited by Julia L. Cassaniti and Usha Menon, brings together leading scholars in the field to reconsider that question and explore the complex mechanisms that connect culture and the human mind. The contributors to Universalism without Uniformity offer tools for bridging silos that have historically separated anthropology's attention to culture and psychology's interest in universal mental processes. Throughout, they seek to answer intricate yet fundamental questions about why we are motivated to find meaning in everything around us and, in turn, how we constitute the cultural worlds we inhabit through our intentional involvement in them. Laying bare entrenched disciplinary blind spots, this book offers a trove of insights on issues such as morality, emotional functioning, and conceptions of the self across cultures. Filled with impeccable empirical research coupled with broadly applicable theoretical reflections on taking psychological diversity seriously, Universalism without Uniformity breaks new ground in the study of mind and culture.

Unjustified: The Freedom Convoy, The Emergencies Act, And The Inquiry That Got It Wrong
by Ray McGinnis
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1998365026 | 222 Pages | True ePUB | 0.7 MB

In January 2022, protesters travelled to Ottawa seeking to debate the Canadian government's pandemic measures that had caused widespread bankruptcies, suicides, domestic abuse, addictions, and overdoses. They challenged the alarmist depiction of the virus as a clear and present danger to all. Media and politicians smeared the protesters as insurrectionists, homophobes, Nazis, anti-vaxxers, and arsonists. But was any of this true?
In Unjustified, Ray McGinnis examines testimony at the PublicOrder Emergency Commission that confirms the protesters were never dangerous as depicted. He chronicles court cases unfolding since the protests that raise questions about our judicial system, and details a recent federal court ruling that concluded the Emergencies Act invocation was unconstitutional and illegal. Unjustified is a call to readers to revisit assumptions about what happened at the Freedom Convoy. McGinnis invites us to question who benefits when media narratives are scaring us to death, and what is the cost to our democracy?
