Roman Sources for the History of American Catholicism, 1763-1939 By Matteo Binasco, Kathleen Sprows Cummings (editor)
2018 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 026810381X | EPUB | 1 MB
Roman Sources for the History of American Catholicism, 1763-1939 is a comprehensive reference volume, researched and compiled by Matteo Binasco, that introduces readers to the rich content of Roman archives and their vast potential for U.S. Catholic history in particular. In 2014, the University of Notre Dame's Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism hosted a seminar in Rome that examined transatlantic approaches to U.S. Catholic history and encouraged the use of the Vatican Secret Archives and other Roman repositories by today's historians. Participants recognized the need for an English-language guide to archival sources throughout Rome that would enrich individual research projects and the field at large. This volume responds to that need. Binasco offers a groundbreaking description of materials relevant to U.S. Catholic history in fifty-nine archives and libraries of Rome. Detailed profiles describe each repository and its holdings relevant to American Catholic studies. A historical introduction by Luca Codignola and Matteo Sanfilippo reviews the intricate web of relations linking the Holy See and the American Catholic Church since the Treaty of Paris of 1763. Roman sources have become crucial in understanding the formation and development of the Catholic Church in America, and their importance will continue to grow. This timely source will meet the needs of a ready and receptive audience, which will include scholars of U.S. religious history and American Catholicism as well as Americanist scholars conducting research in Roman archives.

Jan Radicke, "Roman Women's Dress: Literary Sources, Terminology, and Historical Development"
English | ISBN: 3110710927 | 2022 | 805 pages | EPUB | 82 MB
The book concerns female dress in Roman life and literature. The main focus is on female Roman dress as it may have been worn in daily life in Rome and in a social environment influenced by Roman culture in the time from the beginnings of the Republic until the end of the 2nd century AD. There is, however, a certain surplus as to its contents because many Latin texts also talk about mythical Greek dress and the largely fictional early Roman dress. Altogether, large parts of the history of Roman dress are only known to us through what scholars thought about it in Classical and Late Antiquity. For this reason, this book is not only about real female Roman dress, but also about the ancient pseudo-discourse on early female Roman dress, which has been taken too seriously by modern scholarship. This pseudo-discourse has been mixed together with real facts to produce an ahistorical fabric. It therefore appeared necessary to break with this old tradition and to take a completely new path. The detailed analysis of many texts on female Roman dress is the basis of this new handbook meant for philologists, historians, and archaeologists alike.

Romances & Practicalities: A Love Story (Maybe Yours!) in 250 Questions
by Lindsay Jill Roth
English | 2025 | ISBN: 006333979X | 272 Pages | True ePUB | 1.16 MB

With the pop psychology of Malcolm Gladwell and the humor of Carrie Bradshaw, Romances & Practicalities combines a charming personal love story with research-backed self-help, including a set of 250 questions to help you foster deeper intimacy and get honest about what you're really looking for in a partner.
A few months into Lindsay Jill Roth's whirlwind transatlantic courtship with a handsome Englishman, he made a comment that hit her like a gut-punch: "I don't know you well enough yet." Despite hours on FaceTime and swoon-worthy dates in London and NYC, Roth realized he was right: they didn't know each other very well. And their relationship, while certainly romantic, was hardly practical. Did they even have a shared vision for the future?
In the age of increasingly impersonal ******, how do you get off the ****** hamster wheel and advance a relationship along the path to commitment? How do you know if you're with "the one"?
Enter Romances & Practicalities, a set of 250 research-backed questions spread across twelve categories-from money to children to chores to sex-designed to help you identify your wants, needs, and non-negotiables, assess compatibility, initiate tricky conversations with grace, and build a deeper, stronger relationship. Questions range from seemingly light and casual to intimate and serious, including:
How did your family communicate, share, and argue growing up?
How are we different? Might our differences be a source of future conflict?
How important to you is alone-time?
How important is your career in terms of your identity?
How do you feel about debt? Mortgages?
If we were stuck on a desert island, what strengths would you bring to help us survive?
Roth weaves the questions with her own love story, provocative interviews with couples who've used the system, and practical guidance from a diverse range of clinical and popular experts including Lori Gottlieb, Nicole LePera, Mark Hyman, Emily Morse, Suze Orman, Nate Berkus, and Barbara Corcoran.
Roth's wise and witty narrative explores the reasons we don't often equate romance with practicality, and arrives at a surprising truth: healthy communication isn't just vital, it's sexy.

Romantic Egypt: Abyssal Ground of British Romanticism
by Elizabeth A. Fay
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1793635676 | 235 Pages | PDF | 17.6 MB

Romantic Egypt: Abyssal Ground of British Romanticism traces the historical, cultural and intellectual affiliations between Ancient Egypt and Romantic-period Britain and Germany, including the influences contributed by European thought, politics, and interventions such as Napoleon's 1799 Egyptian Campaign. Until the contributions of Napoleon's expedition to scientific knowledge of Ancient Egyptian monuments and ruins, Egypt had been largely swathed in mystical explanations of its past, its achievements, its beliefs, and its cultural importance; however, the increased knowledge about Ancient Egypt competed with the allure of a more mythically imbued antiquity in the Romantic imagination. Romantic Egypt argues that this balance between knowing and not-knowing, between deciphering and imagining a golden-age Egypt, between enlightened thought and mysticism, was essential to the development of the Romantic imaginary because, for the Romantics, western philosophy and art had their birth in the all-but-lost wisdom of Ancient Egypt.

Rome Measured and Imagined: Early Modern Maps of the Eternal City by Jessica Maier
English | May 7, 2015 | ISBN: 022612763X | True EPUB | 264 pages | 27.3 MB
At the turn of the fifteenth century, Rome was in the midst of a dramatic transformation from what the fourteenth-century poet Petrarch had termed a "crumbling city" populated by "broken ruins" into a prosperous Christian capital. Scholars, artists, architects, and engineers fascinated by Rome were spurred to develop new graphic modes for depicting the city-and the genre known as the city portrait exploded.

In Rome Measured and Imagined, Jessica Maier explores the history of this genre-which merged the accuracy of scientific endeavor with the imaginative aspects of art-during the rise of Renaissance print culture. Through an exploration of works ****** from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, her book interweaves the story of the city portrait with that of Rome itself.
Highly interdisciplinary and beautifully illustrated with nearly one hundred city portraits, Rome Measured and Imagined advances the scholarship on Renaissance Rome and print culture in fascinating ways.

Rome's Greatest Emperor: Vespasian
by Tony Sullivan
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1036103048 | 224 Pages | True ePUB | 2.67 MB

Follow Vespasian's rise from Roman general in Britain to emperor, shaping the Flavian dynasty during Rome's turbulent civil war.
To anyone scanning the sea from the southern coast of Britain in the year 43 AD, the sight of hundreds of ships appearing one by one as dots on the horizon would have filled them with awe and dread. On a leading warship, a hundred and twenty oarsmen heaved at their work as one of the four legionary legates scanned the cliff tops expecting to see them lined with warriors as Julius Caesar had described nearly a hundred years before. Vespasian would lead the Second Augusta in the initial invasion and in a remarkable campaign across southern Britain, capturing a score of strongholds, oppida, such as the formidable Maiden Castle, along the way.
His career later suffered from the intrigues of court politics during the reign of Nero, at one point making the near-fatal mistake of falling asleep during one of the emperor's artistic performances. Vespasian's fortunes were revived by the outbreak of revolt in Judea.
Thus Vespasian found himself in the right place at the right time commanding a vast battle-hardened victorious army as the empire descended into civil war and chaos. The year 68-69 became known as 'The Year of the Four Emperors' as, after Nero's suicide, Galba, Otho and Vitellius seized the throne in quick succession. When Vitellius emerged as the victor Vespasian took his chance.
It would prove a pivotal moment in Rome's history, stabilising the political and economic situation, and establishing the Flavian dynasty.

Mike Roberts, "Rome's Third Samnite War, 298-290 BC: The Last Stand of the Linen Legion"
English | ISBN: 1526744082 | 2020 | 320 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
This book is devoted to the Third Samnite War where, with the Samnites' own independence on the line, they mobilized a powerful coalition with Bruttians, Etruscans and the Senones Gauls to fight for their freedom

The Third Samnite War (298-290 BC) was a crucial episode in the early history of Rome. Upon its outcome rested mastery of central Italy, and the independent survival of both Rome and the Samnites. Determined to resist aggressive Roman expansion, the Samnites forged a powerful alliance with the Senones (a tribe of Italian Gauls), Etruscans and Umbrians. The result was eight years of hard campaigning, brutal sieges and bitter battles that stretched Rome to the limit. The desperate nature of the struggle is illustrated by the ritual self-sacrifice (devotio) by the Roman consul Publius Decimus Mus at the Battle of Sentinum (295 BC), which restored the resolve of the wavering Roman troops, and by the Samnite Linen Legion at the Battle of Aquilonia (393 BC), each man of which was bound by a sacred oath to conquer or die on the battlefield.
Mike Roberts, who has travelled the Italian landscape upon which these events played out, mines the sources (which are more reliable, he argues, than for Rome's previous wars) to produce a compelling narrative of this momentous conflict.

David P. Celani, "Ronald Fairbairn "
English | ISBN: 1032493488 | 2024 | 140 pages | EPUB, PDF | 362 KB + 4 MB
In this concise and introductory book, David Celani examines the work of Ronald Fairbairn, one of the pioneers of Object Relations Theory.

Ronald Fairbairn: A Contemporary Introduction adopts a unique approach to Fairbairn's work and legacy. Organizing the book thematically, Celani makes connections between Fairbairn's disparate and often convoluted papers, offering the reader a more accessible insight into the work of this eminent analyst. He looks in turn at Fairbairn's field-defining work on Object Relations, split consciousness, repression and the impact of parental neglect on a child's developing personality. Celani also explores Fairbairn's assessment of infants' dependency on their maternal figure and brings his ideas into the 21st century. Considering the work of Philip Bromberg in tandem with that of Fairbairn, Celani considers the practical, clinical and theoretical implications of Fairbairn's model.

Leonid Kogan, "Roots Beginning With P and B Ed 2"
English | ISBN: 1614513058 | 2020 | 767 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In spite of the immense progress of Akkadian and Semitic linguistics in recent decades, no systematic diachronic treatment of the the Akkadian vocabulary has been carried out. The Akkadian vocabulary itself has been relatively well disclosed in two major dictionaries, but the Akkadian language has not been been sufficiently studied and analyzed as a linguistic reservoir. The Etymological Dictionary of Akkadian presents a comparative and historical analysis of the entire Akkadian vocabulary in a systematic and comprehensive manner.

Akkadian is the oldest transmitted Semitic language (from ca. 2600 BCE till the end of the first millennium BCE) and with an extant textual corpus of ca. 10 million words it is one of the best documented languages of the ancient world, comparable to the Latin record until the 3rd century CE. Akkadian was the main language of the Babylonian and Assyrian empires and the lingua franca of the ancient Near East used, for example, by the Hittites and Egyptians in international correspondence. The Akkadian language is therefore crucial in reconstructing early Semitic historical grammar, and, due to its central role in a vast geographical and culturally diverse are over a long period of time, Akkadian is unequivocally important as the origin, receptor, and transmitter of both Semitic and non-Semitic loan and foreign words whose traces can, for example, be found in modern languages.

Rosarita: A Novel by Anita Desai
English | January 7, 2025 | ISBN: 1668082438 | True EPUB | 112 pages | 2.3 MB
From "world-class writer" (The Washington Post) and three-time Booker finalist Anita Desai, an exquisitely written stunning exploration of love, place, memory, history, and the secrets between a mother and her daughter.

Away from her home in India to study Spanish, Bonita sits on a bench in El Jardin de San Miguel, Mexico, basking in the park's lush beauty, when she slowly becomes aware that she is being watched. An elderly woman approaches her, claiming that she knew Bonita's mother-that they had been friends when Bonita's mother had lived in Mexico as a talented young artist. Bonita tells the stranger that she must be mistaken; her mother was not a painter and had never travelled to Mexico. Though the stranger leaves, Bonita cannot shake the feeling that she is being followed.
Days later, haunted by the encounter, Bonita seeks out the woman, whom she calls The Trickster, and follows her on a tour of what may, or may not, have been her mother's past. As a series of mysterious events brilliantly unfold, Bonita is unable to escape The Trickster's presence, as she is forced to confront questions of truth and identity, and specters of familial and national violence.
A masterpiece of storytelling from a gifted writer, Rosarita is a profound mediation on mothers and marriage, art and self-expression, and how the traumas from the past can impact future generations.

Rotaviruses and Rotavirus Vaccines
by Ulrich Desselberger, John T Patton
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3725827893 | 324 Pages | PDF | 47 MB

Rotaviruses are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children and in the young of various mammalian and avian hosts. Although rotavirus-associated morbidity and mortality have significantly decreased since the introduction of rotavirus vaccines into childhood immunization programs, the efficacy of these vaccines is suboptimal in developing countries where they are needed most. Our insight into the molecular epidemiology of rotaviruses has benefited greatly from the application of advanced sequencing and bioinformatic techniques. Combined with the recent development of plasmid-only-based reverse genetics systems, powerful new approaches are now available for the study of all aspects of rotavirus biology, including their replication strategy, the structure and function of their proteins, and their ability to suppress immune responses. Moreover, these technologies provide a possible path for the development of new generations of more effective rotavirus vaccines. This Special Issue of Viruses reviews and explores recent progress made in the analysis of rotavirus replication, viral diversity, genotype-phenotype assignment, correlates of protection, biotechnology, and the development of alternative candidate vaccines.
