Lowcountry Conjure Magic: Historical Archaeology on a Plantation Slave Quarter
by Sharon K. Moses
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009539396 | 86 Pages | True PDF | 2.46 MB

Cat Island, South Carolina, was once the location of slave trade activities, including capture of Native Americans for export and the rise of plantations in the Lowcountry for indigo and rice production, from the sixteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. This Element examines the Hume Plantation Slave Street Project led by the author, and archaeological evidence for hoodoo magic and ritual practices involving "white magic" spells used for protection and treatments for illness and injury, and, alternately, for 'black magic,' in spells used to exact harm or to kill. This Element is intended as a contribution to the collective knowledge about hoodoo magic practices in the Lowcountry, centered on the Hume Plantation grounds during this period of American history. It is an attempt to examine how attitudes and practices may have changed over time and concludes with a look at select contemporary hoodoo activities conducted in local cemeteries.

George Kazantzidis, "Lucretian Receptions in Prose "
English | ISBN: 3111443663 | 2024 | 220 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The examination of Lucretian reception in Latin poetry has been served well by scholars. Lucretius' presence in later prose writers, on the other hand, is a topic that warrants more investigation.

Susanne Gatzemeier's 2013 monograph (Ut ait Lucretius: Die Lukrezrezeption in der lateinischen Prosa bis Laktanz) is an invaluable contribution to the topic but by no means exhaustive either in terms of the potential intertextualities it traces or in terms of its interpretive methods and insights. At the same time, recent studies implicate Lucretius' name in discussions of prose writers who were not that often thought in the past to have engaged with the De Rerum Natura in an active way. Caesar and Livy but also Vitruvius and Tacitus are some good examples. The present volume taps into this discussion and broadens further our understanding of Lucretian reception in prose writers, including Cicero, Celsus, Seneca the Younger, Quintilian, Pliny the Younger, Plutarch and Lactantius.

George Kazantzidis, "Lucretius on Disease: The Poetics of Morbidity in ›De rerum natura‹ "
English | ISBN: 3110722658 | 2021 | 218 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The standard view in scholarship is that disease in Lucretius' De rerum natura is mainly a problem to be solved and then dispensed with.

However, a closer reading suggests that things are more layered and complex than they appear at first sight: just as morbus causes a radical rearrangement of atoms in the body and makes the patient engage with alternative and up to that point unknown dimensions of the sensible world, so does disease as a theme generate a multiplicity of meanings in the text. The present book argues for a reconsideration of morbus in De rerum natura along those lines: it invites the reader to revisit the topic of disease and reflect on the various, and often contrasting, discourses that unfold around it. More specifically, it illustrates how, apart from calling for therapy, disease, due to its dominant presence in the narrative, transforms at the same time into a concept that is integral both to the poem's philosophical agenda but also to its wider aesthetic concerns as a literary product.
The book thus sheds new light on

Lyotard and the 'figural' in Performance, Art and Writing (Continuum Studies in Continental Philosophy, 56) By Kiff Bamford
2012 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 1441167072 | EPUB | 1 MB
This original study offers a timely reconsiderationof the work of French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard in relation to art, performance and writing. How can we write about art, whilstacknowledging the transformation that inevitably accompanies translations of both media and temporality? That is the question that persistently dogs Lyotard's own writings on art, andto which this book responds through reference to artists from therecently-formed canon of performance art history, including the myths ofseminal figures Marina Abramovicand Vito Acconci, and the controlled documentation of Gina Pane's actions.Through the unstable, untranslatable element that Lyotard calls the figural, his thought is brought to bearon attempts to write a history of performance art and to question the paradoxicallyprescriptive demand for rules to govern 're-performance'. Kiff Bamford contextualises Lyotard's writings andapproach with reference to both his contemporaries, including Deleuze andKristeva, and the contemporary art about which they wrote, whilst arguing forthe pertinence of Lyotard's provocations today.
