Ferdinand von Bredow, geboren am 16.5.1884, ermordet in der Nacht vom 30.6.1934, leitete vom Juni 1932 bis zum 30.1.1933 das Ministeramt im Reichswehrministerium und hatte damit die Funktion eines Staatssekretärs inne. Obwohl die SS nach Bredows Ermordung eine gründliche Haussuchung hielt, fielen ihr die Tagebücher nicht in die Hände, die Bredow vom 20.2.1933 bis zum 28.6.1934 geschrieben hatte. Ihr entgingen auch Notizen, die Aufschluss über die letzten Tage vor dem 30.1.1933 geben, insbesondere über Kurt von Hammersteins schwankende Haltung.Die mit diesem Buch erstmals veröffentlichten Tagebücher zeigen, wie sehr Bredow Hitler unterschätzte. Von der nationalen Euphorie nach dem 30.1.1933 nicht unbeeindruckt, teilte Bredow die nationalsozialistische Bewegung in zwei Lager: Wenige "gute" Nationalsozialisten mit "redlichem Bemühen" standen gegen die "Radikalinskis", die es zu bändigen galt. Letzteres erhoffte Bredow sich dringend von Hitler, blieb allerdings skeptisch, ob Hitler dazu in der Lage sei. Auch wenn Bredow seine Hoffnungen auf die Person Hitlers setzte, so sparte er doch nicht mit Kritik, was das Vorgehen gegen die Juden und die Außenpolitik betraf.Bredow wünschte, sich mit seinen Fähigkeiten, seinem Wissen und seinen weitreichenden Verbindungen in den neuen Staat einbringen zu können. Doch wurde gerade dies ihm zum Verhängnis: Hitler und Göring hielten Bredow für so gefährlich, dass sie ihn ermorden ließen.

Unfortunately, while the sensitivity of EFM for the detection of potential fetal compromise is high, specificity is low, and there is a high false positive rate which has been associated with a rising cesarean section rate. The authors suggest that EFM is considered and analyzed as a classic screening test and not a diagnostic test. Furthermore, it requires contextualization with other risk factors to achieve improved performance. A new proposed metric, the Fetal Reserve Index, takes into account additional risk factors and has demonstrated significantly improved performance metrics. It is going through the phases of further development, evaluation, and wider clinical implementation.

In March 1944, Japan launched its audacious overland invasion of India from Burma. Taken by surprise, the British rear areas lay exposed and undefended except for the previously untested 50 Indian Parachute Brigade training in the jungle around Manipur.
After a series of brutal encounter battles, the Paratroopers consolidated on the isolated Naga village of Sangshak high in the Manipur hills. Holding out against an aggressive and determined enemy, the Brigade fought off wave after wave of attacks in bloody hand-to hand fighting. With shortages of ammunition and supplies and casualties mounting, the defenders held on for a critical week before fighting their way out through the mountainous terrain, back to British lines.
Fight Your Way Out describes this little known but critical first major battle between Indian and Japanese armies on Indian soil. The siege is described in detail using first-hand accounts as is their daring escape through the jungle and the experiences of Indian and British survivors captured by the Japanese.
The battle at Sangshak was a heartening first indication that by 1944 for the previously all-conquering Japanese. Sangshak cost the invaders precious time from which they never recovered and set the scene for their eventual defeat at the final battles of Kohima and Imphal.

The book develops a Theory of the Figurative Lexicon. Units of the figurative lexicon (conventional figurative units, CFUs for short) differ from all other elements of the language in two points: Firstly, they are conventionalized. Secondly, they consist of two conceptual levels: they can be interpreted at the level of their literal reading and at the level of their figurative meaning - which both can be activated simultaneously.

New insights into the Theory of Figurative Lexicon relate, on the one hand, to the metaphor theory. Over time, it became increasingly clear that the Conceptual Metaphor Theory in the sense of Lakoff can only partly explain the conventional figurativeness. On the other hand, it became clear that "intertextuality" plays a far greater role in the CFUs of Western cultures than previously assumed.
The book's main target audience will be linguists, researchers in phraseology, paremiology and metaphor, and cultural studies. The data and explanations of the idioms will provide a welcome textbook in courses on linguistics, culture history, phraseology research and phraseodidactics.
