The Last Jacobites: Heroes, History and Culture after the Battle of Culloden by Keith Coleman
English | December 30th, 2024 | ISBN: 1399045628 | 240 pages | True EPUB | 2.58 MB
For most people, the story of the Jacobites perished on a bitter April day in 1746 when their hopes of restoring the exiled Stuart monarchy at the battle of Culloden were crushed. Beyond this military defeat, which marked the end of the '45 rebellion, there were surviving embers who kept alive the cause for some time. For some years, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and his exiled supporters Descriptionted with European powers to restore his banished house and regain the British throne, but there was never again a military attempt to oust the Hanoverians who displaced his lineage.

In Europe, Jacobite networks flourished in France, but also in Scandinavia and were influential in spreading Masonic ideas in the areas they operated. Exiles joined the military as far afield as Spain and even Russia, while others formerly loyal to the cause found themselves in the New World, either banished by the British state or willing emigrants hoping for a better life. Ironically, most of the latter supported the British Empire and faced further hardship in the aftermath of the American War of Independence, finding themselves as losers in two major historic upheavals.
Jacobitism arose again as a romantic ideal in the 19th century, surprisingly revived by the Hanoverian royal family, which had displaced the Stuarts. The cult of Highland Scotland was spearheaded by Queen Victoria, who saw herself as the embodiment and successor of the Jacobites. Towards the end of her reign, political Jacobitism became a fringe element in British politics energized Scottish nationalism and became an element in that country's artistic renaissance.
The question of what Jacobitism means to different people in different ages is not an easily answered question. Even in its early days, the movement was not simply a political monarchist group devoted to restoration of a shattered dynasty. Its adherents and some of its detractors recognized some mysterious attraction in its ideals and its symbolism. Which other British royal cult survived so long and inspired a succession of Pretenders devoted to the doomed romance of a long-vanished line of monarchs?

The Millennium Maritime Trade Revolution, 700-1700: How Asia Lost Maritime Supremacy by Nick Collins
English | February 8th, 2024 | ISBN: 1399060120 | 376 pages | True EPUB | 2.25 MB
This book explains how and why and how destructive continental influences destroyed Asia's maritime supremacy.

Following the series' first book How Maritime Trade and the Indian Subcontinent Shaped the World, this book continues to demonstrate how maritime trade has been the key driver of the world's wealth-creation, economic and intellectual progress.
The story begins where the first book ends, when following Roman Empire collapse, 7th-century European maritime trade almost ceased, creating population collapse and poverty; the Dark Ages. In 700, stuttering, hesitant recovery was evident with new ports but Viking and Muslim maritime raiding neutered recovery until the 11th century. In Asia by contrast, short and long-haul trade thrived and accelerated from east Africa and the Persian Gulf all the way to China, encouraging Southeast Asian state formation.
The book tells the story of slowly rising, gradually accelerating European maritime trade, which until the 15th century was overshadowed by far more voluminous Asian trade in much larger, more complex ships traded by more sophisticated commercial entities, contributing to innovative tolerant wealth-creating maritime societies. In Europe, Mediterranean maritime trade made most progress from about 1000 to 1450. But by 1700, north Europeans dominated Atlantic, American and Mediterranean trade and were penetrating sophisticated Asian maritime networks, a complete reversal.
This book explains how and why and how destructive continental influences destroyed Asia's maritime supremacy. As in the first book, Nick Collins finds similar patterns; maritime inquisitiveness, invention, problem-solving and toleration and continental political suppression of those maritime traits, most dramatically in China, but destructively everywhere, allowing the millennium maritime trade revolution.

The Museum in Asia advances an understanding of the flourishing museum landscape in the region by offering a variety of conceptual tools and frameworks through which museum development can be analysed and understood.
Informed by the key theoretical tenets of critical museology and heritage studies, this volume seeks to deconstruct the idea of museology and the museum phenomenon in East, South and Southeast Asia to identify common themes and trends unique to Asia. Drawing on case studies from ten different countries in Asia, including China and India, it proffers a set of analytical tools to think through how we can understand and conceptualise the study of museums and museology in Asia. Contributions to this edited volume are drawn from both Asian and Western academic contexts, thus offering both 'inside' and 'outside' perspectives on the museum phenomenon in Asia.
The Museum in Asia is the first academic book to explore the museum phenomenon in Asia from theoretical perspectives informed by critical museology and heritage studies, making it an essential text for the teaching of courses relating to museum studies, cultural heritage studies or Asian studies. Academics, students and professionals who are interested in learning more about the theory behind the museum phenomenon in Asia will find this book to be a useful resource.

The Pandemic Workplace: How We Learned to Be Citizens in the Office by Ilana Gershon
English | May 15, 2024 | ISBN: 0226832635 | 183 pages | MOBI | 0.84 Mb
A provocative book arguing that the workplace is where we learn to live democratically.

In The Pandemic Workplace, anthropologist Ilana Gershon turns her attention to the US workplace and how it changed-and changed us-during the pandemic. She argues that the unprecedented organizational challenges of the pandemic forced us to radically reexamine our attitudes about work and to think more deeply about how values clash in the workplace. These changes also led us as workers to engage more with the contracts that bind us as we rethought when and how we allow others to tell us what to do.
Based on over two hundred interviews, Gershon's book reveals how negotiating these tensions during the pandemic made the workplace into a laboratory for democratic living-the key place where Americans are learning how to develop effective political strategies and think about the common good. Exploring the explicit and unspoken ways we are governed (and govern others) at work, this accessible book shows how the workplace teaches us to be democratic citizens.

Kenneth W. Milano, "The Philadelphia Nativist Riots: Irish Kensington Erupts "
English | ISBN: 1626190194 | 2013 | 160 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Discover a remarkably intimate and compelling view of the riots with stories of individuals on both sides of the conflict that rocked Kensington.

The outskirts of Philadelphia seethed with tension in the spring of 1844. By May 6, the situation between the newly arrived Irish Catholics and members of the anti-immigrant Nativist Party took an explosively violent turn. When the Irish asked to have their children excused from reading the Protestant version of the Bible in local public schools, the nativists held a protest. The Irish pushed back. For three days, riots scorched the streets of Kensington. Though the immigrants first had the upper hand, the nativists soon put the community to the torch. Those who fled were shot. Two Catholic churches burned to the ground, along with several blocks of houses, stores, a nunnery and a Catholic school. Local historian Kenneth W. Milano traces this tumultuous history from the preceding hostilities through the bloody skirmishes and finally to the aftermath of arrests and trials.

The Power of Self: How insight and self-awareness lead to your authentic self by Keith Floyd EdD
English | July 23, 2024 | ISBN: 1947305964 | 168 pages | PDF | 2.50 Mb
Who are you? Three simple words―one very deep question. Knowing who you are and being able to express this true self to the world, is a very rare gift. The Power of Self is designed and written in such a way that will allow you to explore who you are, gain deep insight about yourself (possibly for the first time in your life), and, most importantly, provide you with the means and ability to express yourself in a truly self-aware and authentic manner. In short, this book will help provide you with the knowledge and understanding that will allow you to fully answer the question, "Who are you?"

The Power of Self accomplishes this seemingly impossible task by first instructing you on what it takes to gather, organize, and reflect through a series of lessons, learnings, and insights. From this point, and through the completion of multiple exercises, assessments, and reflections that are based upon the book's three pillars of Self-Knowledge, Self-Concept, and Self-Understanding, you will be better equipped (and able) to identify, formulate, and demonstrate to the world who you truly are.

The Real D.H. Lawrence by Caroline Roope
English | December 30th, 2024 | ISBN: 1399058169 | 224 pages | True EPUB | 18.51 MB
The Real D H Lawrence is something of a misnomer - for who can ever truly know the real Lawrence? Lawrence himself spent a lifetime roaming the depths of his imagination trying to communicate the essence of who he really was - a quest that ultimately gifted the world twelve full-length novels, eight plays, over eight-hundred poems, enough paintings to form an exhibition, travel essays, novellas and short story collections: and a vast catalogue of non-fiction ranging from topics as diverse as European history to psychoanalysis.

In this expertly researched exploration of Lawrence, Caroline Roope offers a captivating re-telling of the enigmatic author's life, from his humble beginnings in the coal mining districts of Nottinghamshire to his final struggle with censorship and his battle to stay alive. Drawing on Lawrence's published works, as well as his vast personal correspondence, The Real D. H. Lawrence offers a fresh insight into Lawrence's creative process; and his stubborn refusal to live anything less than a life that was right for him, in a world he believed had gone terribly wrong.

The Ruins of Rome: A Cultural History
by Roland Mayer
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009430106 | 395 Pages | PDF | 40 MB

The beguiling ruins of Rome have a long history of allure. They first engaged the attention of later mediaeval tourists, just as they do today. The interest of travellers was captured in the Renaissance by artists, architects, topographers, antiquarians, archaeologists and writers. Once the ruins were seen to appeal to visitors, and to matter for their aesthetic quality, their protection and attractive presentation became imperative. Rome's ruins were the first to be the object of preservation orders, and novel measures were devised for their conservation in innovative archaeological parks. The city's remains provided models for souvenirs; paintings of them decorated the walls of eighteenth-century English country houses; and picturesque sham Roman ruins sprang up in landscape gardens across Europe. Writers responded in various ways to their emotional appeal. Roland Mayer's attractive new history will delight all those interested in the remarkable survival and preservation of a unique urban environment.

W.F. Ryan, "The Secret of Secrets: The East Slavic Version (Volume 7) "
English | ISBN: 1908590734 | 2020 | 544 pages | PDF | 25 MB
The original Arabic Secret of Secrets was probably compiled from multiple sources, and dates from about the tenth century. It purports to be the advice of Aristotle to his pupil Alexander the Great on all the knowledge - political, ethical, military, medical, and occult - needed by a great king. It was translated into Latin, Hebrew, and many European languages. It has been described as one of the most popular books of the Middle Ages. The Hebrew version was translated into a variety of East Slavic, probably in Kiev before 1483. This idiosyncratic version contains major interpolations: a physiognomy by Razes and treatises on poison, sex, and asthma by Maimonides. It is known to have been in the libraries of at least two tsars and two patriarchs in the 16th and 17th centuries. This annotated edition contains a historical introduction, the text, manuscript variants, an analytical glossary, and an English translation.
