The Vichy Past in France Today: Corruptions of Memory by Richard J. Golson
English | December 20, 2016 | ISBN: 1498550320, 1498550347 | True EPUB | 168 pages | 0.8 MB
The Vichy Past in France Today: Corruptions of Memory is an interdisciplinary study examining the continuing impact of the memory of Vichy and World War II in French politics, literature, intellectual discourse and debates, and the law. It argues that despite multiple efforts in all of these areas to come to terms with France's World War II past and to fulfill a "duty to memory" to Vichy's Jewish victims, the nation is still not reconciled to the so-called "Dark Years," even seventy years after the Liberation. Indeed the Vichy past "occupies" important recent works of literature, inflects much political discussion and debate, often serving as a metaphor for political (and moral) evil. Its legacies include the passage of problematic laws that dangerously distort and simplify complex historical realities.

Chapter I examines the historical and legal legacies of the 1990s trials for crimes against humanity and traces their impact on the so-called "memorial laws" of the new century. Chapter II revisits the 2002 presidential elections in France and the impact of Jean-Marie Le Pen's first round victory on intellectual and cultural debate. Chapter III explores Alain Badiou's controversial characterization of Sarkozy's presidential victory as a return of "Petainism" in The Meaning of Sarkozy. The discussion is cast against the backdrop of Badiou's "radical" political thought and Sarkozy's political uses and misuses of the World War II past. Chapter IV examines the controversy surrounding the publication of Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones (2006) and its morally and historically problematic portrayal of an unrepentant Nazi and SS officer. Chapter V discusses Yannick Haenel's fictional recreation of the Polish resistance hero Jan Karski (The Messenger, 2009) in his novel by that name, and the polemics between the novel's author and the maker of the classic Holocaust documentary film, Shoah, Claude Lanzmann. The Conclusion first explores the ways in which the memory of Vichy inflects literary and political reflections on the recent terrorist attacks in France. It also examines strategies proposed by French philosophers for moving beyond the "impasse" of Vichy's memory in France before concluding with a different strategy proposed by the author for the French nation to move beyond the memory of the Dark Years.

Leszek Gardeła, "The Vikings in Poland "
English | ISBN: 1138349399 | 2024 | 418 pages | PDF | 104 MB
This pioneering work offers a meticulous exploration of Scandinavian presence in Viking Age Poland. Unveiling the complexities and controversies of past research and delving into the nuances of reciprocal interactions between Western Slavic and Scandinavian populations as revealed through archaeology and medieval texts, the book casts genuinely new light on a previously overlooked part of the Viking world.

In setting the stage for these investigations, the monograph traces the evolution of Viking and Old Norse studies in Poland. It covers the romanticisation of Norse culture and literature, the dark days of the Second World War when archaeology was strongly driven by violent ideologies, and the profound changes that occurred in academia after the fall of communism and Poland's accession to the European Union. At the core of this book are thorough investigations into cross-cultural interactions along the shores of the southern Baltic as well as in the interior of Poland. Using first-hand analyses of archaeological evidence from bustling ports of trade, settlement sites, silver hoards, and burial grounds, it is argued that the relationship between the local Western Slavic population and the Scandinavian migrants was highly complex but overall very symmetrical. Crucial notions such as the construction of identity in diasporic communities, ritual behaviour, and the symbolic content of Viking Age material culture are also discussed at length, offering new insights into Scandinavian and Slavic minds.

Walter Flex, "The Wanderer Between Both Worlds: A German Soldier's World War I Tale"
English | ISBN: 9887694371 | 2024 | 77 pages | EPUB | 861 KB
Walter Flex's 'The Wanderer Between Both Worlds' is a compelling and deeply moving narrative that offers profound insights into the thoughts and emotions of a young German soldier during World War I. In this work, Flex recounts his experiences on both the Western and Eastern fronts of the war, highlighting his camaraderie with Ernst Wurche, who tragically falls early in the battles on the Eastern front.

Born on November 6, 1887, in Posen, then part of the German Empire, Walter Flex pursued studies in German literature and history at Erlangen and became a member of the Bubenreuther, a prominent student fraternity. Flex himself met a heroic demise on the Eastern front, only weeks after Wurche. The war narrative presented in this book, along with the included song about wild geese rushing through the night, swiftly brought him widespread fame in Germany, making this one of the most poignant novels of the First World War.

The War Underground 1914-18: Tactics and Equipment (Elite) by Simon Jones
English | May 23rd, 2024 | ISBN: 1472861051 | 64 pages | True EPUB | 22.06 MB
This absorbing illustrated study reveals the evolving tactics and techniques used by all sides in the underground war during 1914-18.

Covering the Western Front but also the Gallipoli and Italian theatres, this study explores three aspects of World War I below ground: military mining, attack tunnels and dugouts. In 1914-17, the underground war was a product of static trench warfare, essential to survive it and part of both sides' attempts to overcome it. In 1917-18 it was rendered largely obsolete by the development of the all-arms battle as mobility was restored to the battlefield.

The War in the South Pacific (Images of War) by Jon Diamond
English | January 31st, 2020 | ISBN: 1473870615 | 176 pages | True EPUB | 64.70 MB
The Japanese invaded the Solomon Islands in May 1942 with the aim of building an airfield at Guadalcanal. After an epic six month struggle they were repulsed and the island became a staging base for US Admiral Halsey and his South PacificForce. Comprising powerful naval, marine and army assets as well as land and carrier-based aircraft, Halseys Forces mission was to neutralise the Japanese presence in the South Pacific before moving on to Japan itself.

As explained and depicted in this fascinating book, the campaign was eventually successful but only after some of the bitterest fighting of the Second World War. The fanatical opposition called for extreme measures from US, British and Australian land, seas and air forces. With detailed narrative and captions, the many archival photographs in The War in the South Pacific make for a superb record of this legendary conflict.

The War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free by Pete Hegseth
English | June 4, 2024 | ISBN: 0063389428 | 256 pages | PDF | 2.10 Mb
AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Real men fought for our freedoms. It's time we fought for theirs.
Pete Hegseth joined the Army to fight extremists. Then that same Army called him one. The military Pete joined twenty years ago was fiercely focused on lethality, competency, and color blindness. Today our brass are following the rest of our country off the cliff of cultural chaos and weakness.
Americans with common sense are fighting this on many fronts, but if we can't save the meritocracy of our military, we're definitely going to lose everywhere else.
The War on Warriors uncovers the deep roots of our dysfunction-a society that has forgotten the men who take risks, cut through red tape, and get their hands dirty. The only kind of men prepared to face the dangers that the Left pretends don't exist. Unlike issues of education or taxes or crime, this problem doesn't have a zip code solution. We can't move away from it. We can't avoid it. We have only one Pentagon. Either we take it back or surrender it altogether.
Combining his own war experiences, tales of outrage, and an incisive look at how the chain of command got so kinked, this book is the key to saving our warriors-and winning future wars. The War on Warriors must be won by the good guys, because when the shooting really starts, they're the only ones who can save us.

The Way to Inner Peace: Finding the Wisdom of the Tao through the Sayings of Zhuangzi by Yinchi Chen, Zhuang Zi, Tony Blishen
English | April 20, 2023 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CL1335RF | 136 pages | PDF | 1.21 Mb
The Zhuangzi is one of the great classic Taoist texts. Zhuangzi (or Zhuang Tzu) himself was born during the upheavals and chaos of China' s Warring States period (475- 221 BC). His outstanding written style, vivid and fantastical imagination and marvelous fables exercised a profound influence on the formation of traditional Chinese culture, whilst he himself occupied a commanding position amongst the thinkers of the day. He disdained worldly fame and profit and lived in transcendent calm and unaffected ease. Amidst the rush, busyness and ever-increasing tempo of life today it is easy to become lost and exhausted. However, Zhuangzi and his wisdom can teach us how to find spiritual comfort in this vast world of ours. This book takes the essence of Zhuangzi' s classic and in a single phrase or topic or even a story in its commentary provides us with a concise and original interpretation in an easily understood form. It combines the philosophy of the classic with modern life and takes the reader through 1,000 years of history. In this dialogue with the sages of Chinese philosophy there is both an exchange and collision of ideas that absorb a life force from their wisdom, provide an understanding of the real meaning of life and place us in the modern world, calm and confident in our conduct.Open this book and then, like the kunpeng, journey at will in the liberated poetic world of Zhuangzi.

The Web of Violence: Exploring Connections Among Different Forms of Interpersonal Violence and Abuse By Sherry Hamby, John Grych (auth.)
2013 | 108 Pages | ISBN: 9400755953 | PDF | 4 MB
There is an increasing appreciation of the interconnections among all forms of violence. These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals' experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy.A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice's Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.
