Valerie Sperling, "Building The Russian State: Institutional Crisis And The Quest For Democratic Governance"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813338050, 0813337429 | EPUB | pages: 264 | 0.5 mb
Has the Russian state managed to lay the institutional groundwork for long-term stability and democratic governance? In Building the Russian State , Valerie Sperling assemblies a group of cutting-edge scholars to critically assess the crises in Russia's transitional institutions. Part I of the book shows that Russia's political elites are less focused on serving public interests than on enriching themselves, and examines how these elites are ruling Russia. Part II focuses on the growth of organized crime, the decay of the military, the precariousness of the Russian Federation, the weakness of the labor movement, the corruption of the courts, the challenges facing international reformers, and the authoritarianism of the super-presidential political system. By focusing on the challenges, failures, and occasional successes of the Russian political system, this volume offers upper-level undergraduates and other scholars valuable insight into post-Soviet politics, state-building, and transitions to democracy.

Alexander Baratsits, "Building a European Digital Public Space: Strategies for taking back control from Big Tech platforms"
English | 2021 | ASIN: B09LSQ1FMN | EPUB | pages: 373 | 0.6 mb
The disruptive transformation of the "public" through digitization has led to monopolizing structures on the Internet that make Europe dependent - both at an infrastructural level and politically - on non-European private and state players. At the same time, these structures undermine our democratic order. This book shows how the current crisis could boost our chances of breaking new ground by establishing an independent European Digital Public Space. The contributors are academics, actors from public and non-commercial media, and long-time activists in the field of the Commons.

Yakov Feygin, "Building a Ruin: The Cold War Politics of Soviet Economic Reform"
English | ISBN: 0674240995 | 2024 | 288 pages | PDF | 17 MB
A masterful account of the global Cold War's decisive influence on Soviet economic reform, and the national decay that followed.

What brought down the Soviet Union? From some perspectives the answers seem obvious, even teleological―communism was simply destined to fail. When Yakov Feygin studied the question, he came to another conclusion: at least one crucial factor was a deep contradiction within the Soviet political economy brought about by the country's attempt to transition from Stalinist mass mobilization to a consumer society.
Building a Ruin explores what happened in the Soviet Union as institutions designed for warfighting capacity and maximum heavy industrial output were reimagined by a new breed of reformers focused on "peaceful socioeconomic competition." From Khrushchev on, influential schools of Soviet planning measured Cold War success in the same terms as their Western rivals: productivity, growth, and the availability of abundant and varied consumer goods. The shift was both material and intellectual, with reformers taking a novel approach to economics. Instead of trumpeting their ideological bona fides and leveraging their connections with party leaders, the new economists stressed technical expertise. The result was a long and taxing struggle for the meaning of communism itself, as old-guard management cadres clashed with reformers over the future of central planning and the state's relationship to the global economic order.
Feygin argues that Soviet policymakers never resolved these tensions, leading to stagnation, instability, and eventually collapse. Yet the legacy of reform lingers, its factional dynamics haunting contemporary Russian politics.

Burdened: Student Debt and the Making of an American Crisis by Ryann Liebenthal
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 0358353963 | 336 pages | True EPUB | 1.21 MB
An urgent investigation of student debt in America revealing the corrupt systems, rotten policies, and bad actors that have created a $1.7 trillion crisis.

College costs more today than ever and is worth less. Tuition at public colleges has more than tripled in the past 50 years. Over the same period student debt has grown from virtually nothing to more than $1.7 trillion, second only to home mortgages.
Skyrocketing student-loan burdens are leading an entire generation to put off the traditional milestones of adulthood: buying homes, getting married, starting families, and saving for retirement. The burden weighs heavier on women and black Americans, and with almost 10 percent of student debtors now over the age of 60, it is a crisis no longer limited to the young.
Ryann Liebenthal's Burdened tells the maddening story of how the power plays of legislators and presidents, the commodification of higher ed, and the rapacious practices of for-profit colleges and private lenders have created today's student-debt lava pit.
As the notion of student-loan cancellation percolates into the political mainstream, Liebenthal offers a deeply researched, sweeping narrative of our broken system. Rather than give in to despair, she boldly charts a way out, offering hopeful solutions to this seemingly unfixable problem.

Terence Dooley, "Burning the Big House: The Story of the Irish Country House in a Time of War and Revolution"
English | ISBN: 0300260741 | 2022 | 368 pages | PDF | 22 MB
The gripping story of the tumultuous destruction of the Irish country house, spanning the revolutionary years of 1912 to 1923

During the Irish Revolution nearly three hundred country houses were burned to the ground. These "Big Houses" were powerful symbols of conquest, plantation, and colonial oppression, and were caught up in the struggle for independence and the conflict between the aristocracy and those demanding access to more land. Stripped of their most important artifacts, most of the houses were never rebuilt and ruins such as Summerhill stood like ghostly figures for generations to come.
Terence Dooley offers a unique perspective on the Irish Revolution, exploring the struggles over land, the impact of the Great War, and why the country mansions of the landed class became such a symbolic target for republicans throughout the period. Dooley details the shockingly sudden acts of occupation and destruction-including soldiers using a Rembrandt as a dart board-and evokes the exhilaration felt by the revolutionaries at seizing these grand houses and visibly overturning the established order.

Laurie Mylroie, "Bush vs. the Beltway: The Inside Battle over War in Iraq"
English | 2004 | ISBN: 0060597267 | EPUB | pages: 272 | 0.5 mb
As the dust settles over Baghdad, a leading expert on Iraq tells the story of the obstacles that stood between the US and the fall of Saddam - and reveals that many of them came from within the US government itself

Laurie Mylroie's previous books on Iraq, the No 1 New York Times bestseller Saddam Hussein and the Crisis in the Gulf (co-authored by Judith Miller) and The War Against America, made the persuasive case that Saddam's regime had a long history of brutality and state sponsorship of terror, including involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Her work was highly influential in building the case against Saddam that led to the recent war in Iraq. Now Mylroie takes on the story behind the buildup to Operation Iraqi Freedom, in Bush vs. the Beltway.
