The Almightier: How Money Became God, Greed Became Virtue, and Debt Became Sin by Paul Vigna
English | July 22nd, 2025 | ISBN: 1250343283 | 304 pages | True EPUB | 2.43 MB
The complete story of how we came to worship money, and how we can stop greed from destroying everything.

The pursuit of wealth is considered an essential function of human nature, and greed is an unspoken civic virtue. Many of us revere billionaires and Wall Street rain-makers, then complain about "the system" being rigged, and wonder why the country doesn't seem to work for the little guy anymore. Some blame the Deep State for income inequality and corruption, and others blame capitalism, but the truth is that these issues have much deeper roots: our devotion to money is a manmade invention that has transformed over thousands of years to replace religion as the foundation of our society, and it is tearing civilization apart.
In The Almightier, journalist Paul Vigna uncovers the forgotten history of money, tracing the uneasy and often accidental alliance between wealth and religion as it developed from ancient city-states to today's secular world, where religious devotion has receded and greed has stepped in to fill the void. Through engaging anecdotes, original research, and fresh perspectives on the causes of the many challenges we face today, Vigna makes a compelling argument that money has no power apart from the power we give it.
We can build a better future, where we don't need to choose between helping others and getting ahead. But we can't repair the damage that greed has done until we understand how it took over our world in the first place.

Dive into the heart of the American Civil War, a conflict that redefined the nation and its ideals. This comprehensive history explores the war not merely as a clash between North and South, but as the culmination of decades of simmering tensions over slavery - the last battle of the American Revolution. Witness the pivotal moments that ignited the war, from the abolitionist spark to the secession crisis and the first shots fired at Fort Sumter.

The narrative vividly portrays the key battles that shaped the war's trajectory. Follow McClellan's cautious advance during the Peninsula Campaign and the carnage of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history. Understand the strategic brilliance of Grant's relentless pursuit of Lee, culminating in the siege of Petersburg and the final surrender at Appomattox. Witness the devastating impact of Sherman's March to the Sea and the rise of total war.
Beyond the battlefields, explore the social and political upheavals that transformed the nation. Understand the moral crusade of the abolitionist movement and the fierce defense of slavery in the South. Examine the political maneuvering that led to secession and the creation of the Confederacy. Grasp the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation and its impact on the war's purpose. Witness the challenges of Reconstruction, the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau, the rise of oppressive Black Codes, and the struggle for civil rights in the face of the burgeoning Jim Crow era. Finally, confront the tragic assassination of Lincoln and the uncertain future it left for a nation grappling with its identity. This is a story not only of armies and battles, but of the human drama of a nation transformed, struggling to define freedom and equality in the wake of its most devastating conflict.

The American Paratrooper by Donald Yates
English | August 11, 2023 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CFJ2S5ZX | 88 pages | EPUB | 24 Mb
Donald Yates, a U.S. 20-year military veteran, has released another fine military periodical short read. Yates, the author of over 15 military history pictorials, has released his latest book, The American Paratrooper. Yates, who earlier published Life of the USS Midway, The Life of the USS Coral Sea and the Life of the USS Kitty Hawk, takes the reader on a tour of the paratrooper's life in the 20th century and beyond. The American Paratrooper displays the life of U.S. Army paratroopers with over 50 photos and accompanied citations, some never before published. The book is heavily filled with World War II paratrooper material as that war by far involved the most paratroopers ever. After the World War 2 section you'll see many photos from large-scale military training operations and a chapter showing African Americans from the 555th Parachute Regiment, who relegated to fighting fires instead of combat, doing a heroic job accomplishing their assigned mission. This book would be an excellent addition to any history buffs' library or a great gift for the same for patriotic Americans wishing to learn about their military.

The Analysis of Time Series: Theory and Practice by C. Chatfield
English | PDF | 1975 | 277 Pages | ISBN : 0412141809 | 16.3 MB
Time-series analysis is an area of statistics which is of particular interest at the present time. Time series arise in many different areas, ranging from marketing to oceanography, and the analysis of such series raises many problems of both a theoretical and practical nature. I first became interested in the subject as a postgraduate student at Imperial College, when I attended a stimulating course of lectures on time-series given by Dr. (now Professor) G. M. Jenkins. The subject has fascinated me ever since. Several books have been written on theoretical aspects of time-series analysis. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the subject which bridges the gap between theory and practice. The book has also been written to make what is rather a difficult subject as understandable as possible. Enough theory is given to introduce the concepts of time-series analysis and to make the book mathematically interesting. In addition, practical problems are considered so as to help the reader tackle the analysis of real data. The book assumes a knowledge of basic probability theory and elementary statistical inference (see Appendix III). The book can be used as a text for an undergraduate or postgraduate course in time-series, or it can be used for self tuition by research workers. Throughout the book, references are usually given to recent readily accessible books and journals rather than to the original attributive references. Wold's (1965) bibliography contains many time series references published before 1959.

The Archaeology of Sanitation in Roman Italy: Toilets, Sewers, and Water Systems (Studies in the History of Greece and Rome) by Ann Olga Koloski-Ostrow
English | April 6, 2015 | ISBN: 1469621282, 146964553X | True PDF | 312 pages | 30.5 MB
The Romans developed sophisticated methods for managing hygiene, including aqueducts for moving water from one place to another, sewers for removing used water from baths and runoff from walkways and roads, and public and private latrines. Through the archeological record, graffiti, sanitation-related paintings, and literature, Ann Olga Koloski-Ostrow explores this little-known world of bathrooms and sewers, offering unique insights into Roman sanitation, engineering, urban planning and development, hygiene, and public health.

Focusing on the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, and Rome, Koloski-Ostrow's work challenges common perceptions of Romans' social customs, beliefs about health, tolerance for filth in their cities, and attitudes toward privacy. In charting the complex history of sanitary customs from the late republic to the early empire, Koloski-Ostrow reveals the origins of waste removal technologies and their implications for urban health, past and present.

The Architecture of British Seaside Piers by Fred Gray
English | 2 Mar. 2020 | ISBN: 1785007130 | True EPUB | 224 pages | 219 MB
Of all the architectural delights of British seaside resorts, the most astonishing and idiosyncratic is the seaside pier. Remarkable visual spectacles, piers are architecturally extraordinary in concept and at times outrageous in execution. They brought together the Victorian genius for technological and material innovation, architectural ambition and engineering ingenuity in the search for new designs for leisure (as well as profit) over the sea. This superbly illustrated book explores the history of the design processes leading to the architectural and engineering innovations that have allowed people to walk on water in such diverse and delightful ways.

Coverage includes the development of piers into the crowning architectural glory of British seaside resorts; the key people, materials, inventions and technologies in the field, particularly the work of Eugenius Birch, the greatest pier designer; the remarkable diversity of piers ranging from the earliest simple landing stages, through staid promenade piers and the glories of fully-fledged pleasure piers, to the boisterous joys of funfair and amusement piers; the rich variety of architectural styles, including exotic 'Orientalism' and streamlined Modernism and, finally, today's contemporary prospects for renewal and reinvention.
