Identities, Politics, and Rights By Austin Sarat; Thomas R. Kearns
1997 | 448 Pages | ISBN: 0472084739 | EPUB | 1 MB
The subject of rights occupies a central place in liberal political thought. This tradition posits that rights are entitlements of individuals by virtue of their personhood and that rights stand apart from politics, that rights in fact hold at bay intrusions of state policy. The essays in Identities, Politics, and Rights question these assumptions and examine how rights constitute us as subjects and are, at the same time, implicated in political struggles. In contrast to the liberal notion of rights' universality, these essays emphasize the context-specific nature of rights as well as their constitutive effects. Recognizing that political disputes throughout the world have increasingly been cast as arguments about rights, the essays in this volume examine the varied roles that rights play in political movements and contests. They argue that rights talk is used by many different groups primarily because of its fluidity. Certainly rights can empower individuals and protect them from their societies, but they also constrain them in other areas. Frequently, empowerment for one group means disabling rights for another group. Moreover, focusing on rights can both liberate and limit the imagination of the possible. By alerting us to this paradox of rights--empowerment and limitation--Identities, Politics, and Rights illuminates ongoing challenges to rights and reminds us that rights can both energize political engagement and provide a resource for defenders of the status quo. Contributors are Richard Abel, Bruce Ackerman, Wendy Brown, John Comaroff, Drucilla Cornell, Jane Gaines, Thomas R. Kearns, Elizabeth Kiss, Kirstie McClure, Sally Merry, Martha Minow, Austin Sarat, and Steven Shiffrin. Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science, Amherst College. Thomas R. Kearns is William H. Hastie Professor of Philosophy, Amherst College.

Antonio Spadaro SJ, "Illuminate the Future: The Charism of Religious Life"
English | ISBN: 0809155788 | 2022 | 64 pages | EPUB | 119 KB
"When Pope Francis decided to grant an audience to the Union of Superiors General of Male Religious Institutes at the end of their 82nd General Assembly (November 29, 2013), he had one thing clear: he did not want to make speeches and did not want to hear them. It was his intention to enter the dynamics of the discussion of the Generals, to have questions to reflect on and to answer. I was there to record the conversation and be able to tell it in writing. It was an experience that I would define as "spring": the dialogue was truly such and the contents arose from the confrontation in a spontaneous, natural way, leaving in the present the sense of a true and consoling encounter. In this booklet the reader will find the story of that conversation and the answers that the Pope gave to the questions he was asked "(Antonio Spadaro, director of La Civiltà Cattolica). †

Imaginary Betrayals : Subjectivity and the Discourses of Treason in Early Modern England By Karen Cunningham
2001 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 0812236408 | EPUB | 1 MB
In 1352 King Edward III had expanded the legal definition of treason to include the act of imagining the death of the king, opening up the category of "constructive" treason, in which even a subject's thoughts might become the basis for prosecution. By the sixteenth century, treason was perceived as an increasingly serious threat and policed with a new urgency. Referring to the extensive early modern literature on the subject of treason, Imaginary Betrayals reveals how and to what extent ideas of proof and grounds for conviction were subject to prosecutorial construction during the Tudor period. Karen Cunningham looks at contemporary records of three prominent cases in order to demonstrate the degree to which the imagination was used to prove treason: the 1542 attainder of Katherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, charged with having had sexual relations with two men before her marriage; the 1586 case of Anthony Babington and twelve confederates, accused of Descriptionting with the Spanish to invade England and assassinate Elizabeth; and the prosecution in the same year of Mary, Queen of Scots, indicted for conspiring with Babington to engineer her own accession to the throne. Linking the inventiveness of the accusations and decisions in these cases to the production of contemporary playtexts by Udall, Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Kyd, Imaginary Betrayals demonstrates how the emerging, flexible discourses of treason participate in defining both individual subjectivity and the legitimate Tudor state. Concerned with competing representations of self and nationhood, Imaginary Betrayals explores the implications of legal and literary representations in which female sexuality, male friendship, or private letters are converted into the signs of treacherous imaginations.

Joseph P. Cosco, "Imagining Italians: The Clash of Romance and Race in American Perceptions, 1880-1910"
English | 2003 | pages: 244 | ISBN: 0791457613 | PDF | 1,3 mb
Explores changes in American attitudes toward Italy and Italians during a crucial period of U.S. immigration history.

Integrating history, literary criticism, and cultural studies, Imagining Italians vividly tells the story of two voyages across the Atlantic: America's cultural pilgrimage to Italy and the Italian "racial odyssey" in America. It examines how American representations of Italy, Italians, and Italian Americans engaged with national debates over immigration, race, and national identity during the period 1880-1910. Joseph P. Cosco offers a close analysis of selected works by immigrant journalists Jacob Riis and Edward Steiner and American iconographic writers Henry James and Mark Twain. Exploring their Italian depictions in journalism, photos, travel narratives, and fiction, he rediscovers the forgotten Edward Steiner and offers fresh readings of Riis's reform efforts and photography, James's The Golden Bowl and The American Scene, and Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson.

Imagining Wild America By John R. Knott
2002 | 253 Pages | ISBN: 0472068067 | EPUB | 1 MB
At a time when the idea of wilderness is being challenged by both politicians and intellectuals, Imagining Wild America examines writing about wilderness and wildness and makes a case for its continuing value. The book focuses on works by John James Audubon, Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Edward Abbey, Wendell Berry, and Mary Oliver, as each writer illustrates different stages and dimensions of the American fascination with wild nature. John Knott traces the emergence of a visionary tradition that embraces values consciously understood to be ahistorical, showing that these writers, while recognizing the claims of history and the interdependence of nature and culture, also understand and attempt to represent wild nature as something different, other. A contribution to the growing literature of eco-criticism, the book is a response to and critique of recent arguments about the constructed nature of wilderness. Imagining Wild America demonstrates the richness and continuing importance of the idea of wilderness, and its attraction for American writers. John R. Knott is Professor of English, University of Michigan. His previous books include The Huron River: Voices from the Watershed, coedited with Keith Taylor.

But when Mathilde's fame and success cause her to begin drifting away, Enka becomes desperate to keep her close.
Enter SCAFFOLD. Purported to enhance empathy, this cutting-edge technology could allow Enka to inhabit Mathilde's mind and access her memories, artistic inspirations, and deep-seated trauma. Undergoing this procedure would link Enka and Mathilde forever. But at what cost?
Blisteringly smart, thought-provoking, and shocking, Immaculate Conception offers us a portrait of close friendship-achingly tender and twisted-that captures the tenuous line between love and possession that will haunt you long after you turn the final page.

Immigration and Regional Integration in a Globalizing World : Myths and Truths about Migration By Christopher White
2015 | 217 Pages | ISBN: 0739199099 | EPUB | 1 MB
In Immigration and Regional Integration in a Globalizing World, Christopher White makes an important contribution to the immigration debate by investigating the relationship between two of the most important forces shaping the current international system-international migration and regional integration. The ability to manage the movement of people across national borders is considered one of the primary responsibilities of the nation-state, but international migration always involves more than one country. The world has become increasingly globalized and international migration has followed suit. The vast majority of states have come to realize that successful and effective migration policies involve cooperation and coordination with other states, sometimes by choice and sometimes by necessity. However, these efforts, both regionally and globally, are often highly contentious and result in conflict internally and externally. Managing migration and integration are key concerns for governments in nearly every region of the world and will take on even greater importance as globalization and technological advances shrink distances and bring us closer together. White uses an evidence-based approach to understanding immigration and economic integration to debunk the "migration myth" that sees a strong connection between these two factors. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, the main argument is that there is no substantial relationship between the international migration and regional integration, despite the political rhetoric that generates enormous fear and anxiety surrounding these issues. Instead of conflating them, countries can consider the benefits of integration policies without worrying about migration and can consider migration policies without concern for integration. This book is for anyone concerned about the issue of immigration and its relationship to trade liberalization and regional integration.
