The Routledge History of Irish America
by Cian T. McMahon and Kathleen P. Costello-Sullivan
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032219211 | 597 Pages | True ePUB | 5.2 MB

This volume gathers over 40 world-class scholars to explore the dynamics that have shaped the Irish experience in America from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries.
From the early 1600s to the present, over 10 million Irish people emigrated to various points around the globe. Of them, more than six million settled in what we now call the United States of America. Some were emigrants, some were exiles, and some were refugees―but they all brought with them habits, ideas, and beliefs from Ireland, which played a role in shaping their new home. Organized chronologically, the chapters in this volume offer a cogent blend of historical perspectives from the pens of some of the world's leading scholars. Each section explores multiple themes including gender, race, identity, class, work, religion, and politics. This book also offers essays that examine the literary and/or artistic production of each era. These studies investigate not only how Irish America saw itself or, in turn, was seen, but also how the historical moment influenced cultural representation. It demonstrates the ways in which Irish Americans have connected with other groups, such as African Americans and Native Americans, and sets "Irish America" in the context of the global Irish diaspora.
This book will be of value to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as instructors and scholars interested in American History, Immigration History, Irish Studies, and Ethnic Studies more broadly.

The Saucerian: UFOs, Men in Black, and the Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker
by Gabriel Mckee
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0262049546 | 360 Pages | True ePUB | 1.83 MB

The strange, but true biography of the colorful founder of Saucerian Books, a central purveyor and promoter of flying saucer and conspiracist knowledge in the mid-twentieth century.
Gray Barker (1925-1984) was an eccentric literary outsider, filled with ideas that were out of step with the world. An author and unreliable narrator of implausible stories, Barker founded and operated Saucerian Books, an independent ✅Publisher of books about flying saucers and other ideas at the fringes of popular discourse. In The Saucerian, Gabriel Mckee tells the fascinating story of Barker's West Virginia-based press, the unique corpus of materials it published, and how office-copying and self-publishing techniques influenced the spread of paranormal beliefs and conspiratorial worldviews over the last century. Following the development of UFO subculture, Mckee explores the life and career of a larger-than-life hoaxer and originator of pseudoscientific ideas.
Ever an entertainer, Barker established his reputation with one of the first flying saucer fanzines, The Saucerian, and with his first book, the conspiratorial and sensationalistic They Knew Too Much about Flying Saucers. By the close of the 1950s, he had established a publishing imprint that brought out some of the strangest UFO-related books of the era, with a particular emphasis on flying saucer contactees. Saucerian Books became a platform for those whose stories were too unusual, implausible, or crudely written for more mainstream ✅Publishers. Though Barker himself was a skeptic, he viewed the world of occult believers as a source of ongoing entertainment. He also may have used the perceived eccentricity of flying saucer research, or "ufology," to obscure his homosexuality from his small-town neighbors. From his place on the fringes of midcentury American culture, Barker left an unmatched legacy in conspiratorial concepts that have become prominent pop-cultural folklore, including the Men in Black, the Mothman, and the Philadelphia Experiment. As a mastermind behind the fantastical, Barker's promotional efforts were the precursor to contemporary conspiracism.

The Scientific Way of Warfare: Order and Chaos on the Battlefields of Modernity, 2nd Edition
by Antoine J. Bousquet
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1787387267 | 296 Pages | True ePUB | 2.46 MB

Bousquet's landmark book examines the impact of key technologies and scientific ideas on the theory and practice of warfare and the handling of the perennial tension between order and chaos on the battlefield. Spanning the entire modern era, from the Scientific Revolution to the present, it offers a systematic account of modern warfare as the constitution of increasingly complex assemblages of bodies and machines whose integration rests upon a military assimilation of scientific thought. Reflecting the pervasive influence of scientific conceptual frameworks upon warfare, modern armies have been successively organised by reference to the paradigmatic technologies of the clock, engine, computer, and network. Conversely, major scientific developments and technological breakthroughs have become intertwined with the experience of war, especially since the Second World War's unprecedented mobilisation of scientific rationality and technical expertise. This increasingly tight symbiosis between science, technology, and war is at the heart of both the tremendous powers and enduring pathologies displayed by the contemporary military machine. In this new and revised edition, Bousquet extends the analysis to encompass the latest developments in the scientific way of warfare in the midst of renewed great power competition and a wave of technological innovation in artificial intelligence and robotics.

The Secret Life of a Cemetery: The Wild Nature and Enchanting Lore of Père-Lachaise by Benoît Gallot
English | April 29th, 2025 | ISBN: 1778401589 | 240 pages | True EPUB | 32.62 MB
From the head curator of the most famous cemetery in the world-a moving story about a place where joy, grief, and wild nature converge in unexpected and inspiring ways.

"Père-Lachaise in Paris, whose tombs of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Édith Piaf and many other artistic icons have made it a popular tourist draw, has become a haven for wildlife."-from the New York Times profile of author Benoît Gallot
For Benoît Gallot, Père Lachaise is best explored without a guide: You're guaranteed to lose your way. You'll feel as though you've stepped out of time, out of Paris, and into another place entirely. In his debut memoir, Gallot, head curator of Père Lachaise and son of a grave stonemason, pulls back the curtains on his otherworldly workplace-a cemetery crammed with tourists in the high season and mourners year round, but also a natural paradise, where foxes roam, birds flit between trees, and wildflowers and moss encroach onto tombstones.
In elegant, engrossing chapters, Gallot reveals the secret world of Père Lachaise-its Napoleonic origins, its unusual graves and monuments-alongside touching stories from his working life in the cemetery. Born into a family of undertakers, Gallot was named curator of Père-Lachaise in his early-thirties, inheriting the complex job of managing over 100 acres of green space, overseeing 70,000 graves, and arranging burials and cremations, all while contending with millions of tourists-plus film crews, birdwatchers, ghost hunters, and the occasional nude performance artist. Gallot, who also lives on the cemetery grounds with his wife and young children, demystifies his unusual and often misunderstood profession, which in reality requires much more contact with living people than dead ones. In doing so, he provides insight into the history of graveyards and our evolving relationship with death.
Gallot also shares vivid descriptions of flora and fauna, which have reemerged in recent years thanks to a huge rewilding effort. Initially unsure about the idea, he embraced it as the cemetery alleys blossomed and birdsong proliferated. Then in April 2020, with the city in lockdown, Gallot took an early-morning stroll and crossed paths with a fox-in the middle of Paris! He snapped a picture and posted it, unwittingly setting off a media frenzy. Gallot's daily photographs of Père-Lachaise's flourishing animal and plant life have attracted followers from around the world, helping to change the public perception of cemeteries, which ultimately exist as places for the living.
A bestseller in France, lauded as "a superb book ... full of humor, empathy, and great sweetness" by the French literary press, The Secret Life of a Cemetery is a life-affirming read that will stand the test of time.

The Self in Ancient and Early Modern Philosophy
by Attila Németh, Dániel Schmal
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350380377 | 295 Pages | True PDF | 14.8 MB

This remarkable collection of scholarly studies by internationally distinguished experts explores the intricate and multifaceted philosophical concepts of the Self as understood in Graeco-Roman antiquity and the early modern period.
The contributors weave together a rich tapestry of historical and comparative case studies that highlight tensions as well as connections between ancient and early modern perspectives on the Self. Ancient philosophers discussed include Plato, Lucretius, the Stoics, the Cynics, Augustine and the Neoplatonists. Early modern philosophers include Descartes, Gassendi, Pascal, Locke, Fénelon, Abbadie, Diderot and Kant. Through their analysis, this volume invites readers to embark on a philosophical journey that bridges two epochs, igniting a conversation about the very essence of human identity.
Central to this discourse are a series of thought-provoking chapters that scrutinise the profound influence of ancient thought on the philosophical and scientific theories of the Self that emerged during the 17th and 18th centuries. Whilst these studies offer fresh insights into particular eras of intellectual history and reassess the intricate threads connecting them, the volume as a whole aims to answer several pivotal questions: should we view references to ancient pagan or Christian authors as mere echoes of a cultural code or a fashionable taste for antiquity? Or do they signify a genuine re-engagement with authentic sources of inspiration? Do these intersections reveal opposition, tension or harmonious complementarity? In seeking answers to these questions, the volume stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of our philosophical legacy, and it will be of interest to philosophers, classicists, psychologists and historians of science and ideas.
