Pacification and Reconciliation in the Spanish Habsburg Worlds
by Yves Junot, Violet Soen
English | 2025 | ISBN: 2503581595 | 392 Pages | PDF | 3.9 MB

This is the first volume to analyze pacification strategies within the Spanish Monarchy on a global level. It deals with the development and aftermath of the many early modern revolts on the Iberian and Italian Peninsula, the Sicilian and Sardinian islands, the cities along the North Sea and the Spanish Americas. These comparative studies uncover the different ways in which the Spanish Monarchy dealt with rebellion from cities and constituencies, ranging from military responses and repression to offers for negotiation and reconciliation. They also point out common characteristics of these pacification processes, such as the promises of pardon, the granting of grace and the instruction of peace envoys. The different chapters, each accompanied by an edition of sources, show how the reconciliation and reincorporation into the Spanish Habsburg orbit proved to be a painstaking process with an unpredictable outcome.

Tom Cockle - Panzer-Divisions in Battle 1939-1945 (Concord 7070)
Concord Publications | 2009 | ISBN: 962361165X | English | 74 pages | PDF | 51.2 MB
"Blitzkrieg", or Lightning War, was a new concept that Germany unleashed on a series of countries beginning with Poland on 1 September 1939. The new book, Panzer-Divisions in Battle 1939-45, examines the role panzers played in WWII through a series of photographs and illustrations. Authored by Tom Cockle, the volume begins with a pre'cis of the various battles and theatres in which German tanks saw combat. This first volume on the topic provides coverage of the Invasion of Poland, the Battle for France, the Intervention in the Balkans, and ends with the Desert War in North Africa.

The main focus of the book is the extensive selection of black and white photographs. These show not only tanks like the ubiquitous series of Panzer I, II, III and IVs that formed the nucleus of the all-conquering panzer divisions, but also associated equipment such as the Czech-built Pz.Kpfw.38(t) tank, a variety of armoured cars, plus the well-known Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack. Unarmoured vehicles such as the whole range of halftracks are not left out, alongside other equipment like antiaircraft guns and howitzers. The photos showing vehicles in a range of theatres will prove inspirational to modellers contemplating their next project. The authoritative writer offers detailed and useful captions for each photo as he highlights pertinent aspects of the vehicles.
The centrepiece of the book is a collection of 16 colour plates by Laurent Lecocq, which offers the artist's interpretation of how vehicles appeared in reality. This stimulating book will be an asset to any library on German military vehicles, and it sets the stage for the next volume to continue with the Invasion of the Soviet Union.

Peckish: Suggestions for the Sophisticated Snacker; A Cookbook by Suzanne Lenzer
English | April 22nd, 2025 | ISBN: 0593797000 | 256 pages | True EPUB | 87.26 MB
A celebration of mindful snacking with more than 75 recipes well worth nibbling on, whether you're eating for one or entertaining a group of friends-from the author of Graze.

"Suzanne does 'girl dinner' one better with Peckish, a charming collection of not-quite-meals that perfectly satisfy the way we want to eat today."-Giada De Laurentiis
"My favorite food experiences are very often over the kitchen counter or standing midway between the sink and the stove, so caught up in the chat at hand that simmering pots are neglected and salad dressings are left half-made. What's come to me at last is that many of the most compelling discussions and deepest fits of laughter happen in between the making and the meal itself. These moments are perfect because they have all the features one hopes for in the feast without the organization, orchestration, and, yes, exhaustion. So why not liberate ourselves and embrace the truth? So often it's the snacks, the tastes in between, that make our hearts race."
Mindful snacking (and home cooking) is the philosophy that food stylist and author Suzanne Lenzer nurtures in her own life and shares here with us. Who doesn't love standing in front of a full fridge wondering what to pull out for a covert snack? Eating is simply more fun when we have a few choices and are free to eat how we like, not simply how we've been conditioned.
But don't fret, thoughtful snacking is not complicated nor does it require long days spent at the stove. And while it does require a modicum of planning, the benefits exponentially outweigh the effort. Thoughtful snacking is also about moving beyond boards and platters when we entertain, by adding dimension to the table, both in what we serve and how we serve it.
Peckish is divided into charming chapters sorted by vessel-such as On Toast, In Jars, Skewers and Sticks, In Bowls, Napkins Only, and more-so that the home cook can plan their snacking night with ease.

Periodicals, Fiction and the Novel, 1700-1760: Ecologies of Print
by Jennifer Buckley
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1399527452 | 233 Pages | PDF | 2.06 MB

The essay-periodical and the novel both emerged as new literary genres in the eighteenth century. Yet there has been no full-length study of the formative role each genre played in the development of the other. This book uses the lens of periodical studies to reassess what we know about the history of prose fiction, examining how periodicals shaped fictionality and how they were influenced by it in return. It moves the dial on studies of the English novel, arguing that the vibrant interchange between these genres revolutionised the printed world. Over five chapters that contextualise key authors within London's cutthroat print marketplace, the book studies the idea of 'print ecologies' to explain the mutual dependence of the periodical and prose fiction, disrupting the often-held assumption that the novel emerges from this period sui generis.

Phytopolis: The Living City by Stefano Mancuso
English | May 6th, 2025 | ISBN: 1635425247 | 208 pages | True EPUB | 14.24 MB
A renowned plant expert explains how we can make urgent, positive changes to our cities that protect against and reduce global warming.

The conquest of new lands has been the greatest occupation of our species: for hundreds of thousands of years, humans have searched for new territories to inhabit, finding in the city the best place to live in the last hundred years. Looking at the parabola of our geographical expansion, it appears that humans have gone from being a generalist species, capable of colonizing any environment, to very quickly becoming a specialized species, capable of thriving only within a particular habitat. The city seems to have become the only place where we can expect to thrive and reproduce, because it is the only place where our specialization gives us the best chance of survival, and quality of life.
However, "species specialization" is effective only in a stable environment: in changing environmental conditions, it becomes dangerous. And if the resources the city needs to thrive are not unlimited, global warming can permanently change the environment of our cities-an event that would be fatal. But it is the city itself, as it is today, that is the main driver of environmental destruction. Humankind is confronted with a paradox: we must rethink our cities and make them a lasting ecological niche.
In this clear, accessible, and fascinating work, Stefano Mancuso proposes a green solution: how would our cities be transformed if their framework were modeled on plants?

Picturing Divinity in John Donne's Writings
by Kirsten Stirling
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1843847078 | 193 Pages | PDF | 5.6 MB

A new approach to the visual arts in the work of John Donne
The five known portraits of John Donne and the many artworks bequeathed in his will bear witness to his interest in painting. His interest in art is also evident in his writings, with poems and sermons including many references to pictures and engravings, painters and sculptors. However, Donne never used his familiarity with painterly techniques to produce a simple ekphrasis or description in his writings. This book offers a new approach to Donne's rich and nuanced presentation of the visual arts in his writing, arguing that even his explicit allusions to pictures are less concrete than they may first appear.
Although Donne was familiar with contemporary treatises on art, many of his most compelling references to paintings and painterly techniques come from his reading of theology, including works by Nicholas of Cusa and Martin Luther. These previously unidentified sources for Donne's painterly imagery help us to understand how the plastic arts become his tool to reveal the limits of representation, and thus to point beyond the material realm towards the unrepresentable and unknowable divine.
This study provides new insights on some of his best-known poems, both secular and religious, and extends our appreciation of John Donne as an artist constantly exploring the limits of his own practice as a poet - and preacher - as he confronts the relationship between the human and the divine.

Pietro Pomponazzi and the Renaissance Theory of the Elements: A Study with Editions of Unpublished Texts
by Luca Burzelli
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9462704155 | 309 Pages | True PDF | 4.7 MB

In medieval and early modern natural philosophy, very few issues were as controversial as the nature of the elements. From the thirteenth up until the sixteenth century, European thinkers discussed this problem with growing interest. Defining the nature of the elements was key to deciphering the very structure of the universe and the essence of things.
Along with four primary texts, here edited for the first time, this book discusses one of the most original contributions to this debate, that of Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (d. 1525). Pomponazzi's account, developed in university lectures, holds significance for two reasons. First, it provides a thorough description of the most influential doctrines on the elements presented by medieval scholars, opening a window onto three hundred years of prior discussions on the topic. Second, Pomponazzi also develops his own views on the issue, explicitly defining them as 'heretical' to emphasise his departure from all opinions expressed before him.
