Joel E. Dimsdale, "Anatomy of Malice: The Enigma of the Nazi War Criminals"
English | ISBN: 0300213220 | 2016 | 256 pages | AZW3, MOBI | 3 MB + 2 MB
In this gripping and haunting narrative, a renowned psychiatrist sheds new light on the psychology of the war criminals at Nuremberg

When the ashes had settled after World War II and the Allies convened an international war crimes trial in Nuremberg, a psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley, and a psychologist, Gustave Gilbert, tried to fathom the psychology of the Nazi leaders, using extensive psychiatric interviews, IQ tests, and Rorschach inkblot tests. Never before or since has there been such a detailed study of governmental leaders who orchestrated mass killings.
Before the war crimes trial began, it was self-evident to most people that the Nazi leaders were demonic maniacs. But when the interviews and psychological tests were completed, the answer was no longer so clear. The findings were so disconcerting that portions of the data were hidden away for decades and the research became a topic for vituperative disputes. Gilbert thought that the war criminals' malice stemmed from depraved psychopathology. Kelley viewed them as morally flawed, ordinary men who were creatures of their environment. Who was right?
Drawing on his decades of experience as a psychiatrist and the dramatic advances within psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience since Nuremberg, Joel E. Dimsdale looks anew at the findings and examines in detail four of the war criminals, Robert Ley, Hermann Göring, Julius Streicher, and Rudolf Hess. Using increasingly precise diagnostic tools, he discovers a remarkably broad spectrum of pathology.

Vera Tiesler, "Ancient Maya Teeth: Dental Modification, Cosmology, and Social Identity in Mesoamerica"
English | ISBN: 1477327576 | 2025 | 256 pages | P
DF | 48 MB

A study of Maya dental modification from archaeological sites spanning three millennia.
Dental modification was common across ancient societies, but perhaps none were more avid practitioners than the Maya. They filed their teeth flat or pointy, polished and drilled them, and crafted decorative inlays of jade and pyrite. Unusually, Maya of all social classes, ages, and professions engaged in dental modification. What did it mean to them?
Ancient Maya Teeth is the most comprehensive study of Maya dental modification ever published, based on thousands of teeth recovered from 130 sites spanning three millennia. Esteemed archaeologist Vera Tiesler sifts the evidence, much of it gathered with her own hands and illustrated here with more than a hundred photographs. Exploring the underlying theory and practice of dental modification, Tiesler raises key questions. How did modifications vary across the individual's lifespan? What tools were used? How did the Maya deal with pain-and malpractice? How did they keep their dentitions healthy, functioning, and beautiful? What were the relationships among gender, social identity, and religious identifications? Addressing these and other issues,

Ancient Pasts for Modern Audiences: Public Scholarship and the Mediterranean World
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032647906 | 353 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 68 MB
Together, the contributions promote the creation of inclusive methods of knowledge mobilisation and communication in public spheres across three main areas: cultural heritage, pedagogy, and public-facing scholarship. These areas have all been directly affected by Eurocentric structures that have claimed ownership of ancient Mediterranean cultural heritage and have dictated how it has been taught in schools and communicated to the broader public. The volume is divided into three sections - Museums, Teaching and Learning, and Global and Local Projects - each addressing pressing challenges faced within these interrelated fields and offering ways for us to overcome the exclusionary narratives that plague them.

Ancient Rome's Most Important Civil Wars: The History of the Conflicts that Destroyed the Roman Republic and Split the Roman Empire by Charles River Editors
English | January 1, 2025 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CW1F53Q7 | 393 pages | EPUB | 23 Mb
Julius Caesar is still remembered for winning a civil war and helping bring about the end of the Roman Republic, leaving a line of emperors in its place, but it's quite possible that none of what Caesar did would've happened without the template for such actions being set 40 years earlier. At the time, when Caesar was in his teens, war was being waged both on the Italian peninsula and abroad, with domestic politics pitting the conservative, aristocratic optimates against the populist, reformist populares, and this tension ultimately escalated into an all-out war. One of the leading populares was Caesar's uncle, Gaius Marius, a military visionary who had restructured the legions and extended the privileges of land ownership and citizenship to legionaries on condition of successful completion of a fixed term of service. In the late 2nd century B.C., Marius had waged a successful campaign against several Germanic tribes, and after earning eternal fame in the Eternal City, Marius was appointed a consul several times. In 88 B.C., he entered into conflict with his erstwhile protégé, the optimate Sulla, over command of the army to be dispatched against Mithridates VI of Pontus, a long-time enemy of Rome and its Greek allies.

Ironically, Marius's reforms had made the legions fiercely loyal to their individual generals rather than the state, which allowed Sulla to march his army against Rome and force Marius into exile. With that, Rome's first civil war was officially underway.
Even in his time, Caesar was in many ways larger than life, and because of his legacy as virtual founder of the Roman Empire, much of what was written about - and by - him during his life and immediately after his assassination was politically motivated. The fact that he was murdered on the Ides of March is universal knowledge, but it's often forgotten that he was stabbed while entering the Curia of Pompey, one of the Senate's meeting places, in March of 44 B.C. The curia was a theater dedicated to Pompey the Great, Caesar's rival in the civil war that ended the Republic and made Caesar dictator. When Caesar was stabbed, he fell at the base of a colossal statue of Pompey. Thanks to Caesar's victory in the civil war, Pompey is mostly remembered not for being one of Rome's greatest generals, but for being defeated by Caesar and then ignominiously murdered after he fled to Egypt, where the boy pharaoh Ptolemy XIII decapitated Pompey and offered his head to Caesar as a gift.
The 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235 A.D. has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 150 years, which included the reigns of the Five Good Emperors and has been universally praised as one of the high points of the empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor.
At the same time, this period of time also saw the empire beset by threatening forces on all sides. The Romans faced a newly resurgent Persia in the east, as well as significant forces from German tribes on the Rhine and Goths along the Danube. The various conflicts would result in the unprecedented death of a sitting emperor in battle, which took place in 251 with Emperor Decius, and Emperor Valerian was captured in 260 A.D. As Roman leaders vied with each other for power and constantly fought civil wars, Rome's famous roads fall into disrepair, the economy was crippled, the continent-wide trade system that had flourished in the previous years was replaced with a basic barter system, and there was a reduction in international trade.

Anders als gedacht - Paradoxa der wissenschaftlichen Aufklärung und die Verzauberung der Welt
Deutsch | 2025 | ISBN: 3662706849 | 219 Pages | PDF (True) | 3 MB

Angels, Barbarians, and Nincompoops ... and a lot of other words you thought you knew by Anthony Esolen
English | March 10, 2017 | ISBN: 1505108748, 9781505108750 | True EPUB | 220 pages | 0.6 MB
"It's hard not to like our only word that rhymes with Cupid," writes Anthony Esolen.

Similarly, it's hard not to love this book, which employs a diverse cast of characters ranging from C.S. Lewis and Emily Dickinson to Lily Munster and the Great Pumpkin to reveal the historical, hilarious, and even holy origins of the words we use, even though many of us have forgotten what they mean. Join Professor Esolen on this fun yet educational romp through 98 of your soon to be favorite words.
Learn how and why (to say nothing of when and where) to properly use the word "drunken." (Hint: not to relay the fact that..."The bridegroom's mother has drunken a whole bottle of champagne, and is now drawing flowers on the floor with her lipstick.")
Appreciate why you don't want Lily Munster to dust your furniture...at least not in the King's English.
And seethe, along with Esolen and other lovers of beauty in language and liturgy, when you see how a mighty angel of God is reduced to the status of a mere messenger boy through bad word choices.
Again and again, you'll find yourself agreeing with Esolen, who, channeling his inner Boris Badunov (Bullwinkle the Moose's nemesis, for the philistines and milennials among you), reminds us that " Eees good to know grammar. Eees delight, to play with style. Eees, no?"
Yes, it is! And it also edifying to see just how rooted our language is in the Christian faith, as rooted as once was our culture. Esolen's delightful tour of the English language and its roots gives us a window into our shared heritage that sadly we've largely forgotten. We won't tell you what the word referenced in the first sentence above is... but don't be it.

James B. Bell, "Anglicans, Dissenters and Radical Change in Early New England, 1686-1786 "
English | ISBN: 3319556290 | 2017 | 305 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
This book considers three defining movements driven from London and within the region that describe the experience of the Church of England in New England between 1686 and 1786. It explores the radical imperial political and religious change that occurred in Puritan New England following the late seventeenth-century introduction of a new charter for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Anglican Church in Boston and the public declaration of several Yale 'apostates' at the 1722 college commencement exercises. These events transformed the religious circumstances of New England and fuelled new attention and interest in London for the national church in early America. The political leadership, controversial ideas and forces in London and Boston during the run-up to and in the course of the War for Independence, was witnessed by and affected the Church of England in New England. The book appeals to students and researchers of English History, British Imperial History, Early American Historyand Religious History.

Annihilation of Caste in India: Ambedkar, Gandhi, Weber, and Marx
by Hira Singh
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031787048 | 313 Pages | True PDF | 2.8 MB

This book offers a critical re-examination of the relationship between caste and class. Singh demystifies caste based on a comparative analysis between a Weberian and Marxian understanding of power. He rejects Max Weber's account of caste as rooted in culture which Weber saw as analytically distinct from the economic and political power. In contrast, Singh offers a Marxist analysis of caste as a matter of land (means of production) and labor (social relations of production). Extending his critique of the cultural understanding of caste, Singh examines one of the most prominent accounts of caste as a religious phenomenon specific to Hinduism. The book aims to show the intrinsic interconnectedness of class and caste.

"Awarded a 2007 Myers Outstanding Book Award. ""A sobering analysis of anti-Arab racism, from neo-conservative to liberal, rooted in America's settler colonial past and seeping into every corner of our lives. Steven Salaita takes the reader into the crisis of Arab-American communities in the wake of 9/11. Written with passion, this lucid account of the dangers of American imperialism paints a dark picture of the agenda of the Bush administration not only in the Arab world but also for people of color at home."" Miriam Cooke, Professor, Duke University ""An impassioned and deeply compelling look at the origins, evolution, manifestations and implications of anti-Arab racism today. ... A tour-de-force."" Lisa Suhair Majaj, co-editor, Etel Adnan: Critical Reflections on the Arab-American Writer and Artist and Intersections: Gender, Nation, and Community in Arab Women's Novels ""Salaita dives head-first into the heart of racism in America and uses his personal experiences to help readers understand the mechanics of racism as it applies to Arabs, Muslims and people who look Middle Eastern in the post-Sept. 11 world."" Ray Hanania, journalist and filmmaker, author of I'm Glad I Look Like a Terrorist: Growing up Arab in America and Arabs of Chicagoland ""A highly recommended read, not only for students of Middle East history, but for the average American who wants to know how we have become so intimately and yet so bitterly entwined with the people of the Middle East. ... Salaita has thoughtfully articulated a very regretful era of unabashed racism in American history."" Ramzy Baroud, editor, Palestine Chronicle and author of Searching Jenin Today is a difficult time to be both Arab and American. Since 9/11 there has been a lot of criticism of America's involvement in the middle east. Yet there has been little analysis of how America treats citizens of Arab or middle eastern origin within its own borders. Stev
