The Life to Come and Other Stories (Penguin Classics) by E. M. Forster, edited by Oliver Stallybrass
English | July 24, 2024 | ISBN: 0241707641 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 0.9 MB
A searing collection of E. M. Forster's short stories about forbidden sexuality and desire

'Madness, isn't it? What can it matter to anyone else if you and I don't mind?'
Exploratory, experimental and pioneering, the short stories collected in this volume show E. M. Forster writing about love between men with sensitivity, honesty, anger and humour. Written between 1903 and 1958, only two of the fourteen stories here appeared in print in Forster's lifetime; most remained unpublished while homosexuality was a crime. They range from light-hearted, satirical pieces to moving, highly charged depictions of desire and shared intimacy - a Christian missionary tormented by longing in 'The Life to Come'; a fateful woodland encounter in 'Arthur Snatchfold'; an illicit affair between a young English officer and his Indian friend in 'The Other Boat' - and explore the gap between private and public selves, and the places where love, class, race and sexuality collide.

The Limits of Sexuality Education: Love, Sex, and Adolescent Masculinities in Urban India
by Ketaki Chowkhani
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032150416 | 147 Pages | True PDF | 2.3 MB

This book explores different strands of thinking about sexuality education in contemporary urban India. It interrogates the limits of sexuality education as we know it today by rethinking adolescent masculinities in middle-class urban India.
This book contributes to the wide gap in theorising sexuality education and adolescent masculinities in urban India. It presents an adolescent perspective on sexuality education, looks at adolescent love from the school teachers' perspective, and tries to understand a teacher's negotiations with student romance. It unravels the sexual and romantic lives of adolescents and examines the circulation of sexual knowledge and sources of information on sex that adolescent boys in India have access to. This book uncovers the limits of sexuality education by examining State, feminist, Christian, and sexological materials on sexuality education in Mumbai and Delhi. Based on detailed research and narratives from teachers, young men, and women, the book explores adolescent male romance and its affective registers, adolescent male sexual knowledge, and the regulation of romance in school spaces.
This book will be of interest to students and researchers of education, sexuality and gender studies, masculinity studies, sex education as well as those interested in education policy, education politics, educational research, and inclusion and special education. Located at the intersection of sexuality studies, education, masculinity studies, and cultural studies, it will also appeal to those working in sexuality education in urban India within the complex web of the middle classes, consumerism, post-feminism, romance, adolescent masculinities, and cinema.

The Literature of Extreme Poverty in the Great Depression by Robert Dale Parker
English | January 31, 2025 | ISBN: 0197785069 | True EPUB | 264 pages | 5 MB
The Literature of Extreme Poverty in the Great Depression uncovers a forgotten side of modernism: the literature of unemployment and poverty in the 1930s, particularly fiction and poetry about people starving on the street or struggling on welfare, people who often don't know where they'll find their next meal or whether they'll find someplace to sleep. They spend the night on park benches or in filthy flophouses, or they trade sex for food and shelter, or they starve. Time itself changes. For the starving poor standing for hours and hours in a breadline, the speed of modern culture slows down.

Parker expands on previous studies of the 1930s by recovering the fiction and poetry of dozens of forgotten writers and reading them together with political cartoons and with underknown writing by such acclaimed or understudied writers as Langston Hughes, Tom Kromer, Dorothy West, and Martha Gellhorn. From an age so immersed in despair and suffering that many writers came to doubt the very idea of literary aesthetics, this book rescues a vast archive of literary analogues to the famous documentary photographs that burned the Depression into American visual memory. It shapes a collective portrait and interpretation of a nearly lost literary history that represents a nation, its crisis, and its literature of crisis from the bottom up rather than from the top down.

The Little History of Lincolnshire by Paul Sullivan
English | 6 Feb. 2025 | ISBN: 1803998997 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 11.95 MB
From civil wars to cod wars, Lincolnshire is no stranger to historical upheaval. The stories in this book follow the pre-Roman, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Danish, Norman and Dutch people who carved a manageable landscape from a wild county of wetlands and wolds.

The Little Book of Lincolnshire recounts the events that made Lincolnshire the jewel in England's agricultural crown, relating how a colourful procession of pirates, monarchs, artists, engineers and hucksters brought wealth and despair in equal measure. The story begins with Neolithic burial mounds and ends with the Humber Bridge, even tackling the vexed question of why Lincolnshire people are called Yellowbellies along the way.

The Livable and the Unlivable By Judith Butler; Frédéric Worms
2023 | 83 Pages | ISBN: 1531502741 | EPUB | 1 MB
The unlivable is the most extreme point of human suffering and injustice. But what is it exactly? How do we define the unlivable? And what can we do to prevent and repair it? These are the intriguing questions Judith Butler and Frédéric Worms discuss in a captivating dialogue situated at the crossroads of contemporary life and politics. Here, Judith Butler criticizes the norms that make life precarious and unlivable, while Frédéric Worms appeals to a "critical vitalism" as a way of allowing the hardship of the unlivable to reveal what is vital for us.For both Butler and Worms, the difference between the livable and the unlivable forms the critical foundation for a contemporary practice of care. Care and support, in all their aspects, make human life livable, that is, "more than living." To understand it, we must draw on the concrete practices of humans who are confronted with the unlivable: the refugees of today and the witnesses and survivors of past violations and genocide. They teach us what is intolerable but also undeniable about the unlivable, and what we can do to resist it.Crafted with critical rigor, mutual respect, and lively humor, the compelling dialogue transcribed and translated in this book took place at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) on April 11, 2018, at a time when close to two thousand migrants were living in nearby makeshift camps in northern Paris. The Livable and the Unlivable showcases this 2018 dialogue in the context of Butler's and Worms's ongoing work and the evolution of their thought, as presented by Laure Barillas and Arto Charpentier in their equally engaging introduction. It concludes with a new afterword that addresses the crises unfolding in our world and the ways a philosophically rigorous account of life must confront them. While this book will be of keen interest to readers of philosophy and cultural criticism, and those interested in vitalism, new materialism, and critical theory, it is a far from merely academic text. In the conversation between Butler and Worms, we encounter questions we all grapple with in confronting the distress and precarity of our times, marked as it is by types of survival that are unlivable, from concentration camps to prisons to environmental toxicity, to forcible displacement, to the Covid pandemic. The Livable and the Unlivable at once considers longstanding philosophical questions around why and how we live, while working to retrieve a philosophy of life for today's Left.

Duane Elgin, "The Living Universe: Where Are We? Who Are We? Where Are We Going?"
English | ISBN: 1576759695 | 2009 | 248 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Traditionally, science has regarded the universe as made up of inert matter and empty space. Duane Elgin brings together extraordinary evidence from cosmology, biology, and physics to show that the universe is not dead but rather uniquely alive, an insight that, he shows, is in harmony with all of the world's major spiritual traditions. He explores how this view radically transforms our concept of ourselves, our place in the cosmos, and the evolutionary trajectory of the human family. The nonliving view of the universe has led to rampant materialism and global environmental degradation. To transform our planetary crises we need to move past a paradigm of separation and exploitation and learn to live sustainably on the Earth, in harmony with one another, and in communion with the living universe.

The Logical Renaissance: Literature, Cognition, and Argument, 1479-1630 By Katrin Ettenhuber
2024 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0198881185 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Logical Renaissance: Literature, Cognition, and Argument, 1479-1630 is the first substantial account of early modern English literature's deep but uncharted relationship with logic. The nature and functions of logic have been largely misunderstood in literary criticism of the period, where it is often seen as sterile and formalistic: either an overcomplex remnant of Medieval philosophy superseded by rhetoric, or part of a Ramist pedagogy so stripped back that it had little to offer in the way of creative inspiration.Katrin Ettenhuber shows instead that early modern writers encountered in their study of logic a vibrantly practical art of argument and reasoning, which provided rich opportunities for imaginative engagement and artistic appropriation. The book opens with a clear and accessible introduction to the logical terms and concepts that will guide the discussion. It charts changes in logic education between the late fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries, before presenting a series of case studies that illustrate the creative applications of logic across a wide range of genres, including epic and lyric poetry, drama, and religious prose. The Logical Renaissance demonstrates, for the first time, logic's central role in the literary culture of early modern England.

Laura Hinrichsen, "The Lost Libraries of Tunis: Book Culture of Ḥafṣid Ifrīqiya and Arabic Manuscripts in Europe after the Sack of Tunis (1"
English | ISBN: 3111341232 | 2024 | 310 pages | EPUB | 19 MB
Only little is known about the book culture of Tunis, although the city had been a centre for teaching and learning throughout Ḥafṣid rule in Ifrīqiya (c. 1230 to 1574). The libraries of Tunis are considered lost since the sack of the city by the armies of the emperor Charles V in the summer of 1535. This study reconstructs for the first time the original holdings of Tunis' medieval libraries and shows what can still be learned from these recovered fragments.

An in-depth analysis of a wide range of texts and artefacts shows that the Ḥafṣid libraries were looted and their collections redistributed, mostly among European collectors. The Lost Libraries of Tunis brings Early Modern scholarship on Arabic texts and language into context by utilising the manuscripts from Ifrīqiya as a source to map the interest in, and scholarship on, Arabic manuscripts in Early Modern Europe.

The Loves of My Life: A Sex Memoir by Edmund White
English | January 28, 2025 | ISBN: 1639733728 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 8.5 MB
From the legendary author Edmund White, a stunning, revelatory memoir of a lifetime of gay love and sex.

"In his panoply of sexual encounters, Edmund White's love of sex makes us proud to be human. And the story of his sex life reads like a beautifully crafted, very moving (and very funny!) novel." -John Irving
"A raw, frightening, funny, and beautiful testimony, brimming with transgressive wisdom." -Robert Jones, Jr.
I'm at an age when writers are supposed to say finally what mattered most to them-for me it would be thousands of sex partners.
The 85-year-old "paterfamilias of queer literature" (New York Times) recounts the sixty-plus years of sexual escapades that have inspired his many masterpieces. He explores the sex he had with other closeted boys of the 50s Midwest, with women as a young man trying to be straight, the sex he's paid for and been paid for, sex during the Stonewall and HIV eras, and in the age of the apps. Through tales of transactional sex, mutual admiration, open relationships, domination, submission, love, and loss, he paints an indelible portrait of queer history in America and abroad in a way only someone who has lived through it can.
Written with White's signature honesty, irreverence, and wit, The Loves of My Life is the culmination of a legend's life and work, a delightful and moving tour of over seventy years of being unabashedly gay and in love with love in all its forms.
