The Homotopy Index and Partial Differential Equations by Krzysztof P. Rybakowski
English | PDF | 1987 | 217 Pages | ISBN : 3540180672 | 34.6 MB
The homotopy index theory was developed by Charles Conley for two sided flows on compact spaces. The homotopy or Conley index, which provides an algebraic-topologi cal measure of an isolated invariant set, is defined to be the ho motopy type of the quotient space N /N , where is a certain 1 2 1 2 compact pair, called an index pair. Roughly speaking, N1 isolates the invariant set and N2 is the "exit ramp" of N . 1 It is shown that the index is independent of the choice of the in dex pair and is invariant under homotopic perturbations of the flow. Moreover, the homotopy index generalizes the Morse index of a nQnde generate critical point p with respect to a gradient flow on a com pact manifold. In fact if the Morse index of p is k, then the homo topy index of the invariant set {p} is Ik - the homotopy type of the pointed k-dimensional unit sphere.

The House of the Prophet: Devotion to Muhammad in Islamic Mysticism
by Claude Addas, David Streight
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1941610986 | 155 Pages | PDF | 8.47 MB

Devotion to the Prophet of Islam has been an essential component of Islam since its earliest days. The Muslim " Statement of Faith" is testimony both that God exists and that Muhammad is His Messenger. Muhammad is considered " the perfect man" whose life, most Muslims believe, should be copied to the greatest extent possible, down to the smallest details possible. From early on, and over the ensuing centuries, a " prophetology" developed such that Muhammad' s role in human life was understood as essential not just during his physical time on earth in the 6th and early 7th centuries, but even before the creation of the first man, Adam, and it remains so until the end of the world. Significant clarity and explanation of the Prophet' s role in Islamic spirituality was added by the 13th century Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi, often called " al-Shaykh al-Akbar," the Greatest of Teachers. In this book Claude Addas traces the development of Muhammad' s role in mystical thought, especially through the writings of Sufi masters and with a special focus on the influence of Ibn Arabi. She looks into concepts like the " Muhammadan Way" and " Muhammadan Reality," and ends with a discussion of who- according to Muslim, and especially Sufi, thinkers and Ibn Arabi- should be understood as belonging to the " House of the Prophet" - the ahl al-bayt.

Katharina Rebay-Salisbury, "The Human Body in Early Iron Age Central Europe: Burial Practices and Images of the Hallstatt World"
English | ISBN: 0367880598 | 2020 | 318 pages | EPUB | 10 MB
Identities and social relations are fundamental elements of societies. To approach these topics from a new and different angle, this study takes the human body as the focal point of investigation. It tracks changing identities of early Iron Age people in central Europe through body-related practices: the treatment of the body after death and human representations in art.

The human remains themselves provide information on biological parameters of life, such as sex, biological age, and health status. Objects associated with the body in the grave and funerary practices give further insights on how people of the early Iron Age understood life and death, themselves, and their place in the world.

SJ Striker SJ, "The Humanity of Warfare: Social Science Capabilities and the Evolution of Armed Conflict "
English | ISBN: 1682228061 | 2016 | 144 pages | EPUB | 889 KB
ABSTRACT The Humanity of Warfare: Social Science Capabilities and the Evolution of Warfare addressees the changing nature of conflict and the new focus represented in the Counter-insurgency (COIN) doctrine. Now that the population's welfare is placed at the center, understanding the populations and social dynamics becomes critical. Military commanders and the population's welfare are inextricably intertwined and victory now depends upon the success of this paradigm-shifting doctrine. This book takes a penetrating look at the socio-cultural enablers, subject matter experts and social scientists who assist the military in understanding the indigenous culture and populations they hope to serve and protect. Throughout the course of the book the reader gains an understanding of how the Social Scientist can help the military understand the key socio-cultural issues, dynamics, and leaders necessary to achieve success. Chapter two demonstrates specific examples of relevant socio-cultural products that have greatly enhanced the military's ability to interact successfully with the population of Afghanistan. Chapter three informs the respective commanders on how to best enable their socio-cultural team with specific needs and requirements. Chapter four demonstrates the critical skills, education, and abilities socio-cultural team members must have to be successful in a conflict environment. Chapter five reveals peacetime socio-cultural capabilities designed to inform and prepare military commands by bringing the unique perspectives, analysis, and socio-cultural expertise into their processes to create the most culturally prepared deploying unit as humanly possible before deployment. In short, to fully exploit the socio-cultural capability with the goal to protect lives within vulnerable populations and the occupying soldiers, and achieve objectives.

Captivating History, "The Hundred Years' War: A Captivating Guide to One of the Most Notable Conflicts of the Middle Ages and in European Hist"
English | ISBN: 1090802234 | 2019 | 224 pages | AZW3 | 3 MB
If you want to discover the captivating history of the Hundred Years' War, then keep reading...

Two captivating manuscripts in one book:
The Hundred Years' War: A Captivating Guide to the Conflicts Between the English House of Plantagenet and the French House of Valois That Took Place During the Middle Ages
Joan of Arc: A Captivating Guide to a Heroine of France and Her Role During the Lancastrian Phase of the Hundred Years' War
Knights and battles, princesses and castles, sieges and warrior prophets who lead the way to victory upon shining white horses: all of these feel like the stuff of myths and legends. Yet the story of the Hundred Years' War contains all of these things, and it is a story that is entirely true.
The story of this war is made fascinating by its setting, but it is made inspiring by its characters. Here is a blind king who rides to war for the opportunity to strike one last blow with his sword; here is a young prince, dressed all in black, who leads his father's men to victory; here are boy kings and fierce queens, prisoners who believe in honor, hailstorms that stop entire campaigns, and the wonderful story of a young peasant girl who changed the course of history forever.
The Hundred Years' War changed language, national identity, weaponry, and even the way that people think about war. It is part of the greater narrative of human history and gives a snapshot of how human nature can behave when pressed by the extremity of such a conflict-sometimes with unspeakable honor and courage and other times with cowardice, selfishness, and arrogance. There are many lessons to be learned from this war. Its tale is a cautionary one, but it is also a tale of adventure, battle, hope, and divine intervention. It's the tale of a war unlike any other.

The Hungry Eye: Eating, Drinking, and European Culture from Rome to the Renaissance by Leonard Barkan
English | September 14, 2021 | ISBN: 0691211469 | True EPUB/PDF | 328 pages | 245/322 MB
An enticing history of food and drink in Western art and culture

Eating and drinking can be aesthetic experiences as well as sensory ones. The Hungry Eye takes readers from antiquity to the Renaissance to explore the central role of food and drink in literature, art, philosophy, religion, and statecraft.
In this beautifully illustrated book, Leonard Barkan provides an illuminating meditation on how culture finds expression in what we eat and drink. Plato's Symposium is a timeless philosophical text, one that also describes a drinking party. Salome performed her dance at a banquet where the head of John the Baptist was presented on a platter. Barkan looks at ancient mosaics, Dutch still life, and Venetian Last Suppers. He describes how ancient Rome was a paradise of culinary obsessives, and explains what it meant for the Israelites to dine on manna. He discusses the surprising relationship between Renaissance perspective and dinner parties, and sheds new light on the moment when the risen Christ appears to his disciples hungry for a piece of broiled fish. Readers will browse the pages of the Deipnosophistae―an ancient Greek work in sixteen volumes about a single meal, complete with menus―and gain epicurean insights into such figures as Rabelais and Shakespeare, Leonardo and Vermeer.
A book for anyone who relishes the pleasures of the table, The Hungry Eye is an erudite and uniquely personal look at all the glorious ways that food and drink have transfigured Western arts and high culture.

Axel Honneth, "The Idea of Socialism: Towards a Renewal"
English | ISBN: 1509531378 | 2018 | 160 pages | AZW3 | 206 KB
The idea of socialism has given normative grounding and orientation to the outrage over capitalism for more than 150 years, and yet today it seems to have lost much of its appeal. Despite growing discontent, many would hesitate to invoke socialism when it comes to envisioning life beyond capitalism. How can we explain the rapid decline of this once powerful idea? And what must we do to renew it for the twenty-first century? In this lucid, political-philosophical essay, Axel Honneth argues that the idea of socialism has lost its luster because its theoretical assumptions stem from the industrial era and are no longer convincing in our contemporary post-industrial societies. Only if we manage to replace these assumptions with a concept of history and society that corresponds to our current experiences will we be able to restore confidence in a project whose fundamental idea remains as relevant today as it was a century ago - the idea of an economy that realizes freedom in solidarity. The Idea of Socialism was awarded the Bruno-Kreisky-Prize for the Political Book of 2015.

The Idea of the Castle in Medieval England By Abigail Wheatley
2005 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 190315314X | PDF | 1 MB
Medieval castles have traditionally been explained as feats of military engineering and tools of feudal control, but Abigail Wheatley takes a different approach, looking at a range of sources usually neglected in castle studies. Evidence from contemporary literature and art reveals the castle's place at the heart of medieval culture, as an architecture of ideas every bit as sophisticated as the church architecture of the period. This study offers a genuinely fresh perspective. Most castle scholars confine themselves to historical documents, but Wheatley examines literary and artistic evidence for its influence on and response to contemporary castle architecture. Sermons, seals and ivory caskets, local legends and Roman ruins all have their part to play. What emerges is a fascinating web of cultural resonances: the castle is implicated in every aspect of medieval consciousness, from private religious contemplation to the creation of national mythologies. This book makes a compelling case for a new, interdisciplinary approach to castle studies. ABIGAIL WHEATLEY studied for her PhD at York University's Centre for Medieval Studies.Table of ContentsIntroductionThe Idea of the CastleThe Urban CastleThe Spiritual CastleThe Imperial CastleConclusionBibliography

Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, "The Idea of the City in Late Antiquity: A Study in Resilience"
English | ISBN: 100952707X | 2025 | 456 pages | PDF | 13 MB
The city was one of the central and defining features of the world of the Greek and Roman Mediterranean. Challenging the idea that the ancient city 'declined and fell', Andrew Wallace-Hadrill argues that memories of the past enabled cities to adapt and remain relevant in the changing post-Roman world. In the new kingdoms in Italy, France and Spain cities remained a key part of the structure of control, while to contemporary authors, such as Cassiodorus in Ostrogothic Italy, Gregory of Tours in Merovingian Gaul, and Isidore in Visigothic Spain, they remained as crucial as in antiquity. The archaeological evidence of New Cities founded in this period, from Constantinople to Reccopolis in Spain, also shows the deep influence of past models. This timely and exhilarating book reveals the adaptability of cities and the endurance of the Greek and Roman world.
