Jokes, Jokes, Jokes: My Very Funny Memoir
by Jenny Eclair
English | 2025 | ISBN: 140873205X | 400 Pages | ePUB | 1.82 MB

How did little Jenny Hargreaves become Jenny Eclair and elbow her way into the male dominated world of 1980s stand-up?
Daughter of Major Derek Hargreaves (spy?) and June Hargreaves (spy's wife?) sister of Sara (born to be Head Girl) and Ben (the usurper), Jenny's comedy career took off via drama school, cider, sausage rolls, sleeping with men who looked like they lived under a carpet, punk poetry, anorexia, bedsit misery, waitressing and not really having a clue about anything.
This was a world before microphones, mobile phones, before everyone gave up smoking or started taking coke. Jenny Eclair was on the comedy circuit before there really was a comedy circuit and was the first woman to win the Perrier Award along the way.
Still gigging to sell-out crowds forty years later, Jenny Eclair's memoir charts her childhood, her career and the changing face of women in comedy, all told with hilarious brilliance in Jokes, Jokes, Jokes, her very funny memoir.

Journal IV: 1979-1985 By Mircea Eliade
2018 | 175 Pages | ISBN: 022615968X | EPUB | 1 MB
Journal IV is the first publication, in a translation from the Romanian manuscript, of the journal that Mircea Eliade kept during the last seven years of his life. In this period, Eliade is ensconced as a famous scholar-his works are being translated into many languages and books about him arrive regularly in the mail. His encounters with scholars of like repute are recorded in the journal; after a party in Paris, Eliade shares a taxi with Claude Lévi-Strauss and inadvertently makes off with his raincoat.Running like a fault line through the peak of his success, however, is Eliade's painful awareness of his physical decline-failing vision, arthritic hands, and continual fatigue. Again and again he repeats how little time he has to finish the projects he is working on-his autobiography, the third and fourth volumes of his History of Religious Ideas, and the duties associated with his editorship of the Encyclopedia of Religion. He poignantly recounts the sharpest blow: the disorganization and eventual destruction by fire of his personal library.Within the scope of Journal IV Eliade and his world go to ruin. What does not decline is the vivid and persistent voice of Eliade the writer, an unbreaking voice that-with death only months away-plans a reply to critics, Descriptions out an article, and ruminates on characters to people another novella.

Juan Rena and the Frontiers of Spanish Empire, 1500-1540
by Jose M. Escribano-Páez
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0367460815 | 248 Pages | True ePUB | 3.74 MB

This book explores the political construction of imperial frontiers during the reigns of Ferdinand the Catholic and Charles V in the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean. Contrary to many studies on this topic, this book neither focuses on a specific frontier nor attempts to provide an overview of all the imperial frontiers. Instead, it focuses on a specific individual: Juan Rena (1480-1539). This Venetian clergyman spent 40 years serving the king in several capacities while travelling from the Maghreb to northern Spain, from the Pyrenees to the western fringes of the Ottoman Empire. By focusing on his activities, the book offers an account of the Spanish Empire's frontiers as a vibrant political space where a multiplicity of figures interacted to shape power relations from below. Furthermore, it describes how merchants, military officers, nobles, local elites and royal agents forged a specific political culture in the empire's liminal spaces. Through their negotiations and cooperation, but also through their competition and clashes, they created practices and norms in areas like cross-cultural diplomacy, the making of the social fabric, the definition of new jurisdictions, and the mobilization of resources for war.

Just Beyond the Light: Making Peace with the Wars Inside Our Head by D. Randall Blythe
English | February 18, 2025 | ISBN: 0306828189 | True EPUB | 320 pages | 0.7 MB
"Unnervingly raw and honest, this book is timeless wisdom that was earned the hard way."-Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

From the author of Dark Days and lead singer of long-running extreme metal band, Lamb of God, a riveting and revelatory memoir about self-development and maintaining proper perspective through difficult times
In his gripping, bestselling debut memoir Dark Days, Lamb of God vocalist D. Randall (Randy) Blythe unflinchingly wrote about some of the most harrowing episodes of his past.
Now, in his highly anticipated follow-up Just Beyond the Light, Blythe shares how he works daily to maintain positivity in a world that feels like it is spinning out of control. In his own words, Just Beyond the Light is a "tight, concise roadmap of how I have attempted to maintain what I believe to be a proper perspective in life, even during difficult times." Written with a scathing balance of hard-edged reality offset by a knowing humor and a razor-sharp wit, voiced in in his inimitable, conversational, everyman-philosopher style, Blythe clearly breaks down his approach to life, which is a personal and idiosyncratic mix of sobriety, art, and surfing. He writes movingly of his childhood in the South, of fallen friends, of what he's learned touring the world as the vocalist of a successful heavy metal band, and of the very real ways he is doing what he can to leave the world a better place. Above all, he offers readers hope that balance, real balance, is possible, even (or especially) when things seem hopeless.
Compelling, compassionate, and refreshingly honest, Just Beyond the Light ultimately reminds readers that "as long as we keep our feet (and minds) planted firmly on the ground that is reality, the sky isn't falling- it never has been, and it never will."

Just War: Principles and Cases By Richard J. Regan
2013 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 081322019X | PDF | 1 MB
Bringing just war doctrine to life, Richard J. Regan raises a host of difficult questions about the evils of war, asking first and foremost whether war is ever justified, and, if so, for what purposes? Regan considers the basic principles of just war theory and applies those principles to historical and ongoing conflicts through case studies and discussion questions. His well-received 1996 work is updated with the addition of case studies on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Islamist terrorist organizations. Especially timely are the added discussions of the use of drones to assassinate terrorist leaders and, in the matter of weapons of mass destruction, asking how certain is "certain enough" that a country has weapons of mass destruction before it can be justly attacked? Regan considers the roles of the president, Congress, and the U.N. Security Council in determining when long-term U.S. military involvement is justified. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Richard J. Regan, a Jesuit priest, attended Harvard Law School and received his doctorate in political science from the University of Chicago. He is emeritus professor of political science at Fordham University. Regan is the author of several books, most recently Aquinas: A Summary of Philosophy; and the translator of numerous works by Thomas Aquinas, including The Cardinal Virtues, Compendium of Theology, and Commentary on Aristotle's Politics.PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:"Just War: Principles and Cases is clear, concise, and cogently argued. It belongs in the libraries of legislators and military men alike―anyone however remotely involved in deciding when a nation should go to war. Regan carefully considers all sides, every nuance of every question."―U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings"The book is valuable in exploring the complexity in the context of modern war. The case studies force the reader to apply the theory to war as it is in reality, not war as we might want it to be in the ideal."―Journal of Church and State"A readable, insightful, and provocative treatment of just-war thinking as it applies to historical and ongoing conflicts. . . . Regan's book is an excellent choice for courses on the morality of war and the challenge of peace."―Theological Studies"This book is well conceived, lucidly written, and shows an admirable blend of the moral, legal, and historical materials essential to assessing war thoroughly."―International Philosophical Quarterly

Justice and Restitution in Post-Nazi Romania: Rebuilding Jewish Lives and Communities, 1944-1950
by Stefan Cristian Ionescu
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009466879 | 317 Pages | PDF | 3.78 MB

On 23rd August 1944, following the collapse of the pro-Nazi dictatorship of Ion Antonescu, Romania changed sides and abandoned the Axis to join the Allies. Justice and Restitution in Post-Nazi Romania explores the hopes, struggles and disappointments of Jewish communities in Romania seeking to rebuild their lives after the Holocaust. Focusing on the efforts of survivors to recuperate rights and property, Stefan Cristian Ionescu demonstrates how the early transitional government enabled short term restitution. However, from 1948, the consolidated communist regime implemented nationalizations which dispossessed many citizens. Jewish communities were disproportionality affected, and real estate and many businesses were lost once again. Drawing on archival sources from government documentation to diaries and newspaper reports, this study explores both the early success and later reversal of restitution policies. In doing so, it sheds light on the postwar treatment of Romanian Jewish survivors, and the reasons so many survivors emigrated from Romania.
