Critical Landscape Planning during the Belt and Road Initiative by Ashley Scott Kelly
English | EPUB | 2021 | 256 Pages | ISBN : 9811640661 | 276.1 MB
This book traces the development of landscapes along the 414-kilometer China-Laos Railway, one of the first infrastructure projects implemented under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and which is due for completion at the end of 2021.

Written from the perspective of landscape architecture and intended for planners and related professionals engaged in the development and conservation of these landscapes, this book provides history, planning pedagogy and interdisciplinary framing for working alongside the often-opaque planning, design and implementation processes of large-scale infrastructure. It complicates simplistic notions of development and urbanization frequently reproduced in the Laos-China frontier region. Many of the projects and sites investigated in this book are recent "firsts" in Laos: Laos's first wildlife sanctuary for trafficked endangered species, its first botanical garden and its first planting plan for a community forest. Most often the agents and accomplices of neoliberal development, the planning and design professions, including landscape architecture, have little dialogue with either the mainstream natural sciences or critical social sciences that form the discourse of projects in Laos and comparable contexts. Covering diverse conceptions and issues of development, including cultural and scientific knowledge exchanges between Laos and China, nature tourism, connectivity and new town planning, this book also features nine planning proposals for Laos generated through this research initiative since the railway's groundbreaking in 2016. Each proposal promotes a wider "landscape approach" to development and deploys landscape architecture's spatial and ecological acumen to synthesize critical development studies with the planner's capacity, if not naive predilection, to intervene on the ground. Ultimately, this book advocates the cautious engagement of the professionally oriented built-environment disciplines, such as regional planning, civil engineering and landscape architecture, with the landscapes of development institutions and environmental NGOs.

Critical Perspectives on Refugee and Migrant Integration in Education: Grassroots Narratives from Multiregional Settings
by Marcus Otto
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350452343 | 227 Pages | True PDF | 3.3 MB

This book offers a critical appraisal, at the cross-section of theory and practice, of concepts of integration at work in education in diverse geopolitical settings. With chapters written by experts based in Cyprus, Ethiopia, Germany, Mexico, Pakistan, the UK and the USA, the book includes discussion of regions of conflict, post-conflict and also non-conflict societies in which a cultural hegemony has developed strategies to "integrate" groups perceived as "other". The book challenges the idea of "integration" in education considering how it relates to inclusion and exclusion and considers the extent to which integration can be empirically studied or evaluated. By accommodating a diversity of voices and perspectives, the structure of this book critically questions the underlying hegemonic Global North-shaped assumptions that have informed the integration debate.

Critical Philosophy of Race: Essays By Robert Bernasconi
2023 | 392 Pages | ISBN: 0197587976 | EPUB | 1 MB
The fifteen essays by distinguished philosopher of race Robert Bernasconi that are collected here demonstrate why the critical philosophy of race needs to take a historical turn. Genealogies of the concepts of both race and racism clarify why some of the dominant strategies for combatting racism tend to be ineffective. For example, the Boasian/UNESCO strategy that highlights biology's rejection of race neglects cultural racism. Drawing on the work of Frantz Fanon, the late Sartre, and Michel Foucault, Robert Bernasconi argues for a holistic approach that integrates the concrete experience of racism faced by individuals into the study of institutional, structural, and systemic racism. His philosophical studies of such Black philosophers as Ottobah Cugoano, Anténor Firmin, and W. E. B. Du Bois, contribute to challenging the dominant philosophical canon. This volume will be an essential resource for scholars and students interested in this resurgent topic.

Critical Point Theory and Its Applications by Wenming Zou , Martin Schechter
English | PDF | 2006 | 323 Pages | ISBN : 038732965X | 9.9 1MB
Since the birth of the calculus of variations, researchers have discovered that variational methods, when they apply, can obtain better results than most other methods. Moreover, they apply in a very large number of situations. It was realized many years ago that the solutions of a great number of problems are in effect critical points of functionals. Critical Point Theory and Its Applications presents some of the latest research in the area of critical point theory. Researchers have obtained many new results recently using this approach, and in most cases comparable results have not been obtained with other methods. This book describes the methods and presents the newest applications.

The topics covered in the book include extrema, even valued functionals, weak and double linking, sign changing solutions, Morse inequalities, and cohomology groups. The applications described include Hamiltonian systems, Schrödinger equations and systems, jumping nonlinearities, elliptic equations and systems, superlinear problems and beam equations. Many minimax theorems are established without the use of the (PS) compactness condition.

Jonathan Kramnick, "Criticism and Truth: On Method in Literary Studies "
English | ISBN: 0226830535 | 2023 | 137 pages | PDF | 1345 KB
A defense and celebration of the discipline of literary studies and its most distinctive practice-close reading.

Does literary criticism offer truths about the world? In Criticism and Truth, Jonathan Kramnick offers a new and surprising account of criticism's power by zeroing in on its singular method: close reading. Long recognized as the distinctive technique of literary studies, close reading is the critic's way of pursuing arguments and advancing knowledge, as well as the primary skill taught in the English major. But it is also more than that-a creative, immersive, and transformative writing practice that fosters a unique kind of engagement with the world. Drawing on the rich and varied landscape of contemporary criticism, Kramnick changes how we think about the basic tools of literary analysis, including the art of in-text quotation, summary, and other reading methods, helping us to see them as an invaluable form of humanistic expertise.

Critique of the Victim
by Daniele Giglioli and Sean Mark
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031801318 | 82 Pages | True PDF | 2 MB

This book critiques the victim paradigm that occupies a central place in today's world. As being a victim, or a self-proclaimed defender of victims, is a source of power today, one which grants privilege, an audience, and freedom to act beyond criticism, a critique of the victim appears more necessary than ever. In this stirring polemic, Daniele Giglioli investigates the origins of the ideology of the victim, and its consolidation as a strategy that divides society into offenders and innocents, victims and perpetrators, at the expense of solidarity and political agency. It's important to note that this critique does not entail blaming actual victims, nor investigating who is or is not a real victim, unmasking those who falsely claim to be; critique here is intended in the Kantian sense, of defining and delimiting how to talk legitimately about the condition and uses of victimhood today. It interrogates, in other words, what being a victim entails and the power that comes with it.

Critiquing Communication Innovation: New Media in a Multipolar World
by Rolien Hoyng, Gladys Pak Lei Chong
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1611864291 | 236 Pages | PDF | 1.88 MB

Challenges to Silicon Valley's dominant role in conjuring and patenting the world's technological futures are arising around the world. As digital media technologies emerge from new, globally dispersed locations, a multipolar order of communication innovation seems to be in the making. Yet recovering our ability to imagine futures otherwise requires negotiating conditions-economic, geopolitical, sociocultural, and ecological-rather than reproducing them under the pretext of breaking with the present. The essays in this volume examine research on such conditions critically and comparatively in a variety of geographies. Paying due attention to China's rise as an innovative platform society and AI powerhouse, this book addresses the broader question of a shifting world order and trends that are shaped by China's influence but that extend beyond its borders. Looking at multipolar communication innovation through various critical lenses, our technological futures simultaneously appear to be old, new, and uncertain, while the infrastructures and platforms underpinning communication innovation both affiliate communities and set them apart.

She has his wife's heart; the one she wants is his. Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy by Jonathan Rauch
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 0300273541 | True EPUB | 168 pages | 0.4 MB
Why the crisis of Christianity has become a crisis for democracy

What happens to American democracy if Christianity is no longer able, or no longer willing, to perform the functions on which our constitutional order depends? In this provocative book, the award-winning journalist Jonathan Rauch-a lifelong atheist-reckons candidly with both the shortcomings of secularism and the corrosion of Christianity.
Thin Christianity, as Rauch calls the mainline church, has been unable to inspire and retain believers. Worse, a Church of Fear has distorted white evangelicalism in ways that violate the tenets of both Jesus and James Madison. What to do? For answers, Rauch looks to a new generation of religious thinkers, as well as to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has placed the Constitution at the heart of its spiritual teachings.
In this timely critique Rauch addresses secular Americans who think Christianity can be abandoned, and Christian Americans who blame secular culture for their grievances. The two must work together, he argues, to confront our present crisis. He calls on Christians to recommit to the teachings of their faith that align with Madison, not MAGA, and to understand that liberal democracy, far from being oppressive, is uniquely protective of religious freedom. At the same time, he calls on secular liberals to understand that healthy religious institutions are crucial to the survival of the liberal state.

AnnaMaria Cardinalli Ph.D., "Crossing the Wire: One Woman's Journey into the Hidden Dangers of the Afghan War"
English | ISBN: 1612001912 | 2013 | 240 pages | AZW3 | 4 MB
When an explosive U.S. military report on the topic of sexuality in southern Afghanistan was leaked into mainstream American media, it generated a firestorm of attention and reaction. While some of the findings regarding Afghan sexual practices were simply of cultural interest, other findings were of grave humanitarian concern, such as the cyclical abuse of young boys, perpetuated over countless generations.

Because the topic became sensationalized, the author of the report, Dr. AnnaMaria Cardinalli, was discouraged to see her findings somewhat distorted in a public light. In this book, she takes the opportunity to provide the context of her research, which is as unique and revealing as the report itself.
Instead of a further academic account, this book is the author's journal-in fact "journey"-a personal invitation into the life and rare experience of a woman working on the farthest front of the War on Terror. As a member of one of the Pentagon's "Human Terrain Teams," in the Pashtun south of Afghanistan, this read is not only interesting for its findings on Afghan sexuality but for its intimate window into the fascinating and almost surreal difficulty of our military's job in that country and beyond, and the surprisingly indispensable place of a woman's hand in the world of war.
Through the author's eyes, we ultimately experience the ways in which the issue of Afghan sexuality has profound impact on concerns from women's rights to Afghanistan's economic development and security to the recruitment and development of the terrorist threat to the Western world-a threat, she argues, we will not be free of without attention to this cycle of violence.
It is also fascinating in these pages to see how cultural sexism is not simply the province of semi-medieval Central Asians, but is also present in our own politico-military culture, as the author describes firsthand. This book goes far beneath the headlines of our seemingly endless war in Afghanistan to inform us of the exact situation among the opposition we've faced, in more important ways than one. It is must-reading for every citizen concerned with ours-or the Afghans'-progress henceforth in that region.
AnnaMaria Cardinalli has had an unusually varied career in both the performing arts and service to her country. A classical/flamenco guitarist and operatic singer, she became an international recording artist while still a teenager. A car accident having set back her musical career, she was accepted into the doctoral program in Theology at Notre Dame, and at age 24 became the youngest person awarded a Ph.D. from the university. After September 11, 2001, she responded to a call from the FBI for individuals with advanced degrees and cultural/religious expertise, which led to service in Iraq under the auspices of Joint Special Forces Command. In 2009 she became a member of the U.S. Army's first Human Terrain Team in Afghanistan, a unit designed to seek cultural understanding and civilian cooperation with U.S. forces. Today AnnaMaria Cardinalli, Ph.D., runs a private security firm in Santa Fe, NM, while continuing to enjoy opportunities to pursue her first love, of music.

Crucibles of Power: Smolensk under Stalinist and Nazi Rule by Michael David-Fox
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 0674247469 | True PDF | 480 pages | 38 MB
An illuminating new history of World War II-era Smolensk, a region at the crossroads of the two great dictatorships of the twentieth century.

During the Cold War, the Smolensk Archive held the only collection of Communist Party documents available to Western scholars, becoming the foundation for generations of scholarship on Soviet history. Crucibles of Power returns to the Smolensk Region with fresh eyes and fresh sources. Prizewinning historian Michael David-Fox traces the experiences of Smolensk residents between the interwar years and the end of World War II, a period during which the city and region passed from Stalinist rule to Nazi occupation and back. The result is a revelatory examination of choice and power under dueling forms of murderous totalitarianism.
Exploring the life-and-death decisions of a fascinating cast of characters―from young women in the Communist Youth League to a defense lawyer during Stalin's Great Terror who became Smolensk's collaborationist mayor during the German occupation―David-Fox shows how deeply the Stalinist and Nazi regimes relied on the cooptation of average citizens motivated by greed and need, but always within the orbit of ideology. Challenging today's Russian nationalist narrative of heroic WWII resistance, he finds that large numbers of Russians aided the Nazi occupation of Smolensk in order to protect themselves, secure their own self-interest, or pursue vendettas against a Soviet state they found no less corrupt or oppressive than its German foe.
At a time when much of the world is tilting away from liberal democracy and toward authoritarianism, Crucibles of Power masterfully unravels the threads of dictatorial rule. Smolensk emerges as a laboratory for understanding the mechanics of both outright coercion and subtler forms of power, as well as the enabling behavior of ordinary citizens acquiescing to extraordinary crimes.
